DIY Elevated Planter Box - with plans

- This video shows the process of building an elevated planter box. Also known as a raised planter box, but I like the term "elevated" because it is on legs.
It requires 10 fence boards and 1 2x4 and is very easy to make with these plans.

Exactly what I was looking for to grow potatoes. The one thing I always add is pond liner to wood boxes. Thank you - going to build today. Oh - and the 2x3s were one dollar cheaper than the 2x2s at Lowes so I bought those instead. GREAT VIDEO !

Great video! Awesome design. I'm a cheapo so instead of ceader I used pallets that I lathered up on the outside with varnish. But tge inside I used flex seal. I also incorporated an 1-1/2 water holding area by. Cutting 2 x 4's with a 1/2 hole through them, glued screwed & sealed along with the entire inside. Have had a problem with soil drying out quickly between waterings. Thanks again!

Can you tell me where you found cedar fence boards that are 7" wide? Ive been looking for them but all i find are 5" wide? I can use 3 instead of 2 for the sides, but think it would look better with 3.
They are redwood fence boards I bought from Home Depot.
Great video! Easy to follow, and the plans are great. One teensy critique: your background music is WAY too loud. I'm trying to hear you talk over it, and have the music blasting away is a bit distracting. Other than that minor quibble, really good!
Do you think I could use a brad nailer instead of a finish nailer? Or will the brads not have the holding power needed?
A brad nailer will work, just use a lot of them. I just finished making 2 more of these boxes and used 18 gauge finish nails, so if you have 18 gauge brad nails, it should be fine.
awesome tutorial! Why do you use both a drill and an impact driver?
Thank you! It is possible to use just a drill, but impact drivers are a lot better at driving screws than drills are.
Hi Bob, I purchased the plans. Thanks for putting them together. This weekend I got the wood. I got cedar instead of redwood. I think it looks better and it doesn't have too many splinters. I'm curious, what is the gauge on the nail gun you used, 18, 16? Thank you
Hi Dion, thanks for buying the plans! I used a 16 gauge nailer for this. 18 will work also, but make sure to use more nails.

Hi, I'm so excited to try this project with my husband today. What size of finishing nails did you use? Also do you have recommendation for soil type? We plan to make a few planters filled with a variety of vegetables.
I used 16-gauge nails that are 1-1/2" long. 18-gauge should work too. Make sure they are galvanized or stainless.
For the soil, get one made for raised beds. This is the exact soil I use, and I believe it took 2.5 bags to fill the planter.

What did you do to the inside before putting in soil? Did you add rock in the bottom? Use landscaping fabric?
I just put the soil straight into the wooden box. It has very good drainage because of all the holes in the bottom and sides.
@@BobsWoodStuff does dirt drip out of it? I want to put mine on my turf lawn but I don't want dirt leaking out and onto the turf.
@@SuitTV A little bit of dirt will drip out, especially the first time you water it. And the water that drips out is always dirty.

At the advice of a master gardener I know, I did not put a liner inside the box.
@@BobsWoodStuff why did they advise you to not put a liner in the bottom? Did you have any issues with wood rot with the dirt touching directly to the wood or is it to soon to tell if that will be an issue....I know ya drilled several holes in bottom for drainage which leads to my next question....do you lose a lot of dirt through those holes and how much of a mess does that make assuming dirt does get through? I ask cause I was looking to put a planter on a deck or patio stoned area.
@@richardfitzsimmons4312 The reason I was advised not to line the planter was for improved drainage.
I have not had any issues with rot in the 1 year I have been using the planter. I believe that redwood or cedar will be ok for many years.
When filling the planter and during the first watering, a little bit of dirt came through the holes and gaps, but after that only water came out.
@@BobsWoodStuff To prevent or minimize dirt from falling through the drain holes, you might consider putting a single layer of water-permeable weed-block fabric on the bottom. This allows excess water to move through the holes while retaining the soil. It's available at any garden center or big box home improvement store. I suppose you could also use fiberglass window screen material as a barrier to soil movement as well.

Hey Bob, I don't have a nail gun. I was able to hammer the bed boards to the cleats alright. Would you recommend I use a hammer and finish nails to attach the legs and mitered top to the box? or continue to use screws?
For the mitered top, a hammer and finish nails is a good way to go. In the plans, I have switched it from a mitered top to a butt jointed top, because the miters require a board longer than a fence board.
For attaching the legs, screws would be stronger than the finish nails. With the nail gun it is easy to put a LOT of nails and strengthen the legs, but without a nail gun I would go with screws.

What length are the finish nails on your nail gun? Did you use all the same size for the entire project?
For the finish nails to construct the leg, 2" nails are best. For the nails to attach the planter bottom to the support cleats, 1-1/2" is better, so it doesn't poke out the bottom.
did you use sealant or any weather protectant on the wood? I'm a bit concerned about the longevity when out in the elements.
I didn't treat the wood with anything. Redwood is naturally rot and pest resistant. I have some redwood planters that I built 5 years ago and they are still fine.
Red cedar has similar rot resistance.

Can I use only a circular saw to do this project?
Yes, you should be able to do this project with just a circular saw. For the narrower pieces if you are not comfortable ripping them lengthwise on the circular saw, you can purchase 2x2s for the corner support blocks and narrow redwood strips for the leg pieces and trim pieces.
How thick are the fence boards? Thanks
The fence boards are about 3/4" thick, but there is a lot of variation. So some are as thin as 5/8" and some are as thick as 7/8".
Random question, but what software do you use to make your plans?
I use SketchUp for the 3D models, and Layout for the printable plans.

I made these plans for a very simple small planter, which may be what you are looking for:

FYI peeps: You're going to need boards that are over 6' for the tim pieces. The total length of the box after completion is 74.5". Or you could shorten the sides and bottom pieces and make the bed slightly shorter so that you can use 6' boards all the way around.
On the finished plans, I ended up butt jointing the trim on the top instead of mitering it, which makes it possible with 6 foot pieces.

around much were the supplies used?
It cost about $60 for the supplies of one planter box.
@Niko Karayannis I am using redwood. In California, that is the size that the redwood fenceboards come. It could work with 3 boards, but you might need to do 2 of the support frames in the middle of the planter.

Did you use a pressure treated 2x4?
No, I used a cedar 2x4 in this video. But redwood or pressure treated also work well.

I built my whole box with pressure treated pine and my neighbor told me to trash it because of the chemicals they use to treat the pine. My uncle told me to just brush boiled linseed oil on it.....I'm gonna build another one and use cedar walls and treated pine legs. Ill post an update to note the differences in the wear.

Did you put a water leak?
Yes, I drilled a lot of holes into the bottom of the planter, and some holes into the sides near the bottom. There is also drainage in the gaps between the bottom boards.

How deep?
The planter box is 15" deep.
@@BobsWoodStuff I am building a second box, for my tomatoes, my first box I copied off a box from Fleet Farm, however , it had a center rail attacked at the end, it supported the center slats, but gave way towards the season , current depth is 9” I’ll have to add another 1x6 side all around. Then use your braces around the parameters to support the slats
@@teaglet Good idea. The support cleats are very good for planter box bottoms. This design also needs some support in the middle though (the square frame), so the boards don't bow downward from the weight.
Unnecessarily expensive for such simple plans and not yet in the so easy metric sizes shame
I'm sorry you think my plans are expensive. They are 12 pages long, step-by-step, and fully illustrated.
Some people sell plans for cheaper, but they often have few illustrations and large paragraphs of text.

I would love to watch your video, but the background soundtrack makes it impossible. I can't understand why people feel a need to use it. There are a lot of us out here with hearing disabilities (mysophobia) that prevent us from watching.
