He drops the names of his heroes in that middle passage -- "Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis, Chuck Berry, Huey Smith, Bob Dylan!" -- so the part you missed was his shout out to Bob Dylan. The roots of the song date back to the 1920's with dozens of variations released in the decades after, notably "Keep Knocking (But You Can't Come In)" by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys in 1938, "Keep A-Knockin'" by Louis Jordan in 1939, and "Keep A-Knockin'" by Little Richard in 1957, and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" by The Rolling Stones in 1971. Smiley Lewis recorded "I Hear You Knocking" with Huey Smith on piano in 1955. That's the variation Edmunds draws on here.
