I just read his book, and unlike the title, he didn't build the brand all alone at all. The book taught me how important networking and finding people with same interests actually is. Sure, he believed in his brand so much that nothing could have stopped him but he also had an amazing group who did everything they could to help him execute his dream.

A key takeaway to underscore: he paid $35 to a student at a local university for a logo. I always tell my clients & partners that there's amazing talent at universities. Students are anxious to apply their budding skills, knowledge, perspective, and talents to get valuable, real world experience (outside of internships). Yet, their talents remain underutilized. They should be more included in the convo, they have alot to offer.
They didn’t have any money at the time and that was all they could pay. When the company went public, they gave the designer shares of the company that is Equivalent to $1m. You are right though, there are many talent at the university.
They relatively had nothing when the logo was designed. They didn't even have a name for their brand ..
As far as I am aware, they compensated the student hefty when they started growing

@@finelife6019 35$ back then was like 230$ now which is really little if you compare it to what you would need to pay for a company to do the job but for a student who did it for 2$/h (=13$ today) it’s pretty fair I‘d say.
I am currently reading "Shoe Dog" and the only thing I got to say is that the book is a masterpiece at showing us how a normal guy from Portland became to be one of the richest and most successful humans alive. Unlike most successful people that will go on telling others about how special they are, Phil Knight tells us his whole story that starts with him struggling to keep his company "Blue Ribbon Sports" alive and ends with the actual company we know today as Nike. He shows us that the path to success isn't as easy as some think and that you will probably have to deal with a lot of problems to achieve what you want. He's a champion that dealt with so many problems when his company started out like the lawsuit that Onitsuka filed against Blue Ribbon, the competitors he faced, and even the banks that wouldn't lend him money. I believe that his book is a must-read for anyone that aspires to be successful.

The founder of Nike is a genius! He found a passion he loved and I imagine that many at the time doubted him and yet, despite the adversity he pressed on to create a great brand! Love stories like these!

Nike didnt become "nike" in a night. it was a loooong journey. For the first 7-8 years Phil was just a shoe distributor. And he had the legendary Bowerman as a partner. But no matter what, he believed in his company and never gave up. Listened to his gut feeling. Amazing story. I recommend everyone to read his book.
Nice story of Phil Knight the founder of Nike. Few people succeed without help in life, Phil Knight received help from Japanese shoe businessman Onitsuka and track and field coach Bill Bowerman. The signing of Basketball superstar michael Jordan and the creation of the Nike Air Jordan line turned nike into a billion dollar corporations.

Phil tells of much more complicated and a 13 year struggle in his book than described in this audio. Steve Prefontaine was vitally important in the track world and Bowemann
created his shoe - the waffle shoe.
Starting as a reseller/distributor.. Building connections and saving money. Once he saved a lot he uses the ideas and buid his own brand. This will take great guts and marketing strategy. He is surely an awesome businessman. 👌

It's starts off pretty tight, then quickly falls to a weird superficial mess. It's quite badly-(ghost)written, and you finish thinking you just got told a rambling, semi-pointless story as a diversion to the real history. Apart from mad respect for Bowerman, I was mainly left with the sense that Phil is a dick of a human being. IMO, of course.
NIKE will always be popular to me. I like that the brand have a variety of different things to choose from.

My first pair of Nike running shoes was the Nile LD 1000 back in 1976. It was a great pair of running shoes for its time. It offered broad waffle soles for great stability. It's successor was the Nike LDV which was introduced around 1978 which was also a great running shoe, but the soles were a bit narrow than the 1000. When the first generation of Nike Air came out sometime around 1979-1980 those shoes were a pile of junk. During my beach run, which was 10 miles, I noticed the soles were coming apart from the mid soles. Around the 6 mile run I had to stop and walk home. The beach salt water was too harsh for those shoes! Sometime in the mid 1980's as Nike was becoming commercialized, the quality in distance running shoes was not there anymore. They seem to focused more on sneakers and sport clothing.
My recommendation to everyone is to read the book! it's not just another autobiography. It 's one heck of a journey with travel, highs, lows, love, heartbreak, trouble and a fucking roller coaster ride. Thoroughly enjoyed the book!
Phil Knight didn't just stumble onto Onitsuka. He was introduced by a man named Frank Endo who at the time was importing Onitsuka gymnastics shoes to America. Mr. Endo told me that the first Nike logo was half an arrow. But it was difficult for the sewers to sew the right angles. He said he recommended curves instead of angles and drew a picture of a half arrow into the swoosh. I asked him, are you telling me that you actually invented the Nike logo? He just smiled. I didn't know how to share this story until just watching this video.
The original drawing he got from the student at Oregon is on display in the Jaqua Academic Center on campus in Eugene, OR along with the first pair of Nike shoes and the shoes Steve Prefontaine used to break 4 minutes. It was the swoosh.

I got my first pair of Nikes in 1981 for basketball. I can still picture them today because I wanted them so bad then. They were canvas high tops with a green stripe. Our school colors were green and white (Eagles) I've been a Nike guy ever since.

NIke and Reebok were both equally desirable brands and then Air Jordan's crushed Reebok. Reebok tried to respond with their Pump boots but couldn't match in popularity.

Remember when Nike had more than the same 10 sneakers models????? Now they release one new color of a model they have had for years and they make a big deal about it!. I'd say the most innovative years for Nike and the sneaker industry were between the years 1987-1991. Just look at the shoe store catalogs at that time, and even look at Nike's catalogue at that time...there was A LOT more innovation and A LOT more variety.
An interesting story which clearly shows Nike was built by TWO men.

I think that Nike started as a distributor for what is now called Asics. They did not make the original sneakers.
