I just wanted to say thank you again for the amazing job you did using your Wicked Edge sharpener on the 3 knives you sharpened for me at the Knife Show in Jersey City November 2011. I still cant get over how perfect this sharpener works and I look forward to owning one in the near future. Thanks again Clay, you are not only a brilliant entrepreneur but a super nice guy.
Great question. If I've created a convex edge and just want to maintain it, I'll strop at the lower angle, in this example 17 degrees. If that's not enough to bring the edge back, I'll make a couple very light passes with the ceramic stones at the widest angle, in this case 20 degrees.
wow, i'm super glad that the wicked edge is capable of creating a convex edge. i have decided to save up and get a WEPS in a few months and also decided that i want a convex edge on a certain knife, so this only solidifies my choice!
You can use the strops if the edge doesn't need much work, or the highest grit stones you have if the edge is rolled over. The 800/1000 diamond stones or the ceramics work really well for this.
In this video you are using ceramic stones I belive just to touch up the convex. If you have an extremely dull convex edge would you start this process with 100 grit stones and then repeat with each of the following stones up to strops ? I mean would you go 17 20 19 18 17 with. The 100 grit then repeat the 200 then 400 ect. Btw love my wicked edge.
when maintaining knife do you go through the entire progression of 20, 19, 18 17 degree? what would be text book for maintenance high grit stones, ceramics and or strops ? sorry for the continued dumb questions.......
I have been using my W.E. for about a year now with great results, but damn. I just tried to convex a Benchmade folder, and it is next-level sharp! It push cuts paper with only it's own weight pushing it down! Next up, I will try my SpartanBlades!
when touching up knife with stones and/or stros at what bevel angle do you do it, or do you go thru the entire progression [20,19,18,17] ??? sorry for what might be dumb question !!!!!!
Noob knife person here - Do you focus on sharpening the entire blade the same amount? To me it looked like you were sharpening the area around the tip less. Is the goal for the blade of the knife to shrink maintaining the original shape of the blade or do you sharpen certain high usage areas more than others?
Hey Clay, I've done it where I start at 20 degrees, then step by step go 1 degree lower. For example, start at 20, then 19 then 18. But when I'm finished, the edge doesn't feel as sharp as when I finished at 20. Would it be okay to start at 17, then go to 18, 19, 20?
It was nice to see you at the Shot Show, Thanks for touching up my Sebenza, You touch up 18 degrees with ceramic stone and strop at 16 degrees, I never sharp my Sebenza with Wicked Edge, Because I scare to mess it up, But I sharp another knife, But can't get sharp as I want, Maybe the angle is wrong on the Wicked Edge? I also I order the ceramic stone, Did you ship out yet? I will call you later..Thanks.
I think I started with the 600 grit stones to create the bevels and then progressed through the 1200/1600 ceramic stones. From there, I just used the ceramic stones to create the micro-bevel.
so kyle talked me into buying the glass handelz with laping film instead of strops , am i lossing the face that the strop gives a little , wouldn't the strops be better?
The glass with lapping films are sweet and can give you a really nice polish. Depending on the grit, you can get a mirror polish with just 10-20 strokes with the film after going from the 1000# diamonds. I still strop a little to finish it off. I'm not seeing a big difference in polish with the naked eye between the 3 micron films and the 4 and 2 micron strops, but I can see the difference under the microscope and there is a little bit of edge improvement from stropping lightly after the 3 micron films. If you don't go with the strops and just use the glass/films setup, you'll still get a great finish and crazy sharp edge.
Hi rabbivj, They are created with a convex edge, so I usually sharpen them with one for customers so I don't modify the knife but for my own, I do a standard v grind at 40 inclusive also.
Thank you for the reply. I generally dont do convex edges so ill probably do this at 40 inclusive. Thanks! Now one more question. Since I have a large sebenza. what would you recommend for the depth, i was thinking about going A and 3/4 since it looks like a small sebenza youre sharpening there...would that be a good approximation?
Just color in the bevel with marker and stay with a fine stone. Pay attention to whether you're only hitting the shoulder at 40 inclusive. If that's true, you might want to move it to the bottom holes unless you don't mind a bigger bevel.
Clay, So much easier and faster on the Gen 3, it's almost silly not to convex all you knives if you prefer convex edges. On chris reeve knife i sharpen 16 to 19 degrees {every 1/2 degree 19 to 16} and it comes out amazing. , start to finish in less then 15 minutes
I agree, the Gen 3 makes convexing edges much easier. I've even had some fun and success with doing a light scrubbing motion with my stones on one side at a time while sliding the angle setting lever back and forth through the range of angles I've selected.
thanks for the prompt reply, I think I'll experiment with that approach.... BTW: I think that would make a great video, as your clients would be amazed at what a great approach that is !!!
convex edges are cool buuut... they sound like a bitch to hone up and maintain without setting up the system like this. I understand you could just use a strop but, if you get some bigger rolls I generally need a ceramic to take those out.
They do take a little more work but it's not too difficult to touch them up of the edge rolls. Essentially you just use a fine stone at the widest angle of the convex for a couple of strokes and then lower the angle and strop it some.

man... this is therapy also :)
I love to spend some time with my knives sharpening, it's a zen art.

I use the strops when at all possible and only use the finest grit stone I last used on the knife if the edge is rolled a little.
I could definitely do that. In this video I wanted to show how to create a convex edge because so many people like them.
Btw, your TH-cam videos are good for people looking to get into the W.E. and for people who already have the system and want to get better with it.
after restoring the convex edge how do you maintain [ touch up ] the knife until restoration is needed again ? ceramics/ strops/ pastes etc etc
Thanks Clay, you did a wonderful job on my Seb.
after reprofiling and creating new edge how do you maintain sharpness until reprofiling again ? stones? strops? which grits etc etc

How long would this edge last put under normal every day use?

@clayallison1969 so do i just ship the knife do you guys need any info and how much is it per knife thx
hi i have a xm-24 and i was wondering if you guys could sharpen it for me thx
Where did you get the magnifying lens with the build-in light?

Clay, great video... can you tell me what stones that you start with including the stones once you begin the micro bevel at 20 degrees

Hi Clay, quick question. Generally with this knife, do you want to have a convex edge? i usually sharpen my knives with a 40 deg inclusive...

I think that sounds about right.

much better ;)

why not just sharpen to 17degrees 34 degrees inclusive and stop right there ???
