    This is how an instructional video should be made a GREAT JOB. Thanks for not spending half the time, in the beginning, saying why you are doing the repair, video, and self-promoting subscribe. It's not necessary. If you build a great video, they will come. Great Job made me enjoy watching and want to do the repair myself. THANK YOU!

    Great video. My Tacoma was vibrating pretty hard when accelerating. I jacked it up and checked out underneath and the transmission mount was bad.

    The clunk when stopping is probably axle wrap. extremely common on these trucks, could be as simple as the slip yoke needing lubed, the rear brakes needing adjusted, or it could be the leaf springs. Mine didn't go away until I put new leaf springs in

    Ya'll forgot the washer that goes on right before the carrier bearing nut.

    • @xtrchessreal
      @xtrchessreal ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He put two washers on the other side instead of one on each side of the flange. Major malfunction. Then he wonders why the nut was over driven compared to the original position. ??? So the side with two washers is being compressed more than it should into the new bearing. And the side with no washer will malform the nut against the teeth of the driving propeller shaft. I know its a mistake he should have realized it when he re-watched the video and then gone back to fix it properly. The kind of guy that has a bolt left over from something. Or missing a bolt inside the transmission pan. I'm surprised he compares new parts to old at all - when he is not going to put it back the way it was. Oh well.

  • @candeffect
    @candeffect 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    He didn't install the washer before the nut. 4:35 10:55
    'We're a little tighter than before'. That was a clue the washer was missing.

      Hahaha ya what an idiot u cant miss it. U can see the old washer rub behind but and even see the splines under the nut. He almost missed the 2 washers at 4:30 or whatever u noted when u see him remove washer

      @@travo5050 I'm about to replace my carrier bearing. I've seen videos where they grease and videos where they didn't. I looked at my Haynes manual and it does not mention greasing it. Can you or someone else provide better insight and what type of grease to use (Red and Tacky)? Thanks!

    I have 2000 Tacoma that had the exact same problem at 125k... an intermittent "pop" in the driveline when pulling up to a stop sign. I was told the transmission mount and center bearing needing replacement by a mechanic. Later, another mechanic diagnosed that the rear leaf springs were wrapping. $1200 later, these repairs did not fix the problem. I then replaced the entire driveshaft and that fixed the problem which turned out to be the driveshaft slip joint near the rear differential. The slip joint had excessive wear in the splines due to lack of lubrication and would bind not releasing freely...thus a pop when it did.

    that feeling like you're being bumped in the rear when coming go a stop is most likely the slip yoke, cleaning and re-greasing with the Ford grease solved it for me. also gonna do the trans mount, but for different reasons. thanks for this video!

    Clunk is likely the rear axel “wrapping” due to rear springs getting a bit sloppy - put a clamp on the rear leafs and it’ll tighten right up :)

    Hi! The frequency of such cars as land cruiser prado, 4runner, tacoma with automatic transmission there is a problem - when you approach an intersection, you slow down and then at the start you remove your foot from the brake pedal, at this moment there is a push in the transmission. What is causing this and how to solve this problem?

    Thanks for the info. When I tightened the bolt for the center bearing and tried to get to torque spec, it turned the drive shaft and flange about 1/2 an inch. Manual transmission was in 1st gear. Truck on ground. Did I mess up the transmission? I backed it off slightly to get flange in original spot

  • @robw1330
    @robw1330 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You should call your customer's truck back and fix where you didn't put the washer back under the carrier bearing nut.... which is behind the flange. It's one washer behind the flange, one behind the nut.

    Hey dear friend! you put 2 washers on the back of the flange and It is supposed to be one on the back and the other one should come in front of the flange, so it will lock the nut for not losing it (crush washer)
    I am giving you advice so next time you take care of those small issues.
    Anyway I hope you don't mind it although we all are human and we do mistake it ... nice video

      Sadly no. It looks like this is a feature on Tacomas. I replaced everything rubber and I still get the clunk. What I do to keep it to a minimum is switch from Reverse to drive and vise versa but wait a few seconds before applying gas.
      But even then I still get it sometimes. I don't think it damages anything on the truck tho. I hit 200k miles a few months ago.

    Why ??? Mine is a stick shift 4x4 ! Both of them were put in neutral and the drive shaft still would not budge !! Pushed in the clutch too !!! Do I need to lift the back side of my truck to do this job and be able to rotate the drive shaft ??? ! Great video too !! Thanks !

    • @alexpage8965

      😂😂😂😂 thank you for the laugh…. Of course you have to have the rear wheels off the ground and the parking brake needs to be released. Otherwise when you move the driveshaft the car will need to move too, it’s bolted directly to the rear diff and subsequently rear wheels.

      Yep I noticed you forgot that washer too man..lol
      In my experience a "thud" at stops is from axle wrap on these Toy trucks & truck based SUVs.
      When they release pressure the driveshaft slides into the yoke rather hard, sometimes hard enough you feel you were hit from behind. Putting a ton of grease into my yoke is Toys remedy. I mean it took a bunch of grease inside of mine to stop this too btw not just a pump or two.
      The 2wd yokes don't have grease fittings like 4wds do so shaft must be removed to grease.
      A "clanking" and/or the "creeking" sound is almost always first diagnosed as center bearing and/or U-Joint on the Toy trucks. After replacing those the clank was still the same??
      Finally I put my pry bar under my trans mount (aka: engine Insulator) and pryed just as you did, as soon as I did it I found the clank noise. Similar to "tin can" hitting under truck as mine bounced but it's not felt? Drives you nuts!
      My U-joints and CB were really bad too, much worse than this one.
      At 340k miles on my 2005 Tundra it was time.. Not complaining here in the least, I can handle this repair that often..lol
      Thanks.
      Real good job on the vid..

    • @modvs1

      When does the sound occur? The only issue I've had (so far) is the common (infamous) drive line/slip joint backlash on sharp pull ups (braking). Adequate lubing of the appropriate zerk should usually fixes the issue (temporarily). I wouldn't think dry slip joints would produce a metal screech sound.

      Prices vary based on shop labor times and part brands used, You could find estimate from as low as $300 and as high as $700. It is best to call around to get the best price and remember that most all shops will negotiate, the best shop though are usually not the cheapest.

      If it was a Nissan it wouldn't need the bearing replaced and there wouldn't be any rust on the frame period. Wasn't a single spot of rust under my 95 Nissan truck that was parked pierside by the ocean over 20 years when I was in the Navy. But keep buying Trashotas, they need your money to keep replacing all those rusty frames.

      @@jkutyna I will agree I beat a 02 frontier for over a decade cause title has typo from previous owner that didnt speak English. 70k somehow during title transfer a 2 ended up in front 70 and so 270k was milage then title was a B class or not actual mileage so I couldn't sell it and ran it hard thinking it had neer 300k sold at 180k so I thought 380k but figured out what happened just by seeing how easy it can happen at 3rd tardy MVD. I sold for 1.500 :( Nissan ac suck and some dash board electrics can be crippling Impossible fixes. Maxima loaded are shit = Toyota Camry awesome

    Good video, Unlike others you did not remove transmission cross member.....Why does some mechanic remove the transmission cross member to replace the transmission mount?

    Great video, but you needed to torque it down. I seen a lots of people working on cars or trucks and never seen then torque it down.

    I notice a clunk in my 2002 Tacoma once and awhile when I come to a stop. Maybe that carrier bearing is the problem. I notice all the u-joints have grease fittings. I wonder why they didn't put one on the carrier bearing.

    What’s the issue when the truck is going into second gear? It takes some time. But if I warm up the truck the issue disappears?

    • @SDsailor7
      @SDsailor7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a transmission problem, have you done the service yet? might need new fluid and filter.

    • @APDTY

      texture6 yeah the key symptom there is it goes away when it warms up, trans fluid needs to be a certain temperature to work properly, make sure the fluid is not low and maybe time for a trans service, at only 40k miles hopefully you do not have an internal trans issue as that is low mileage. If the check engine light is on, make sure to pull codes Incase you actually have an engine issue, if no codes and if the fluid is not low, then I would suggest letting a transmission shop test drive it before changing the fluid and filter, just to get there opinion before messing with the symptoms

      It’s a 2003 Tacoma. I bought it with 144487 miles. It’s now at about 189000 miles.

      @@texture6 Mine drives exactly the same. I put a new transmission in it and it has the same behavior. Over time I've learned that I need to pump the clutch 3-5 times when I start the truck to get the RPM to drop to about 1200. This helps that 1st to 2nd shift be better. Also just learning to feel the shift and drive it the way it wants to be driven is good. My truck has 170k miles and may also need trans mount/center support bearing/yoke grease so maybe this isn't normal, but yeah it is also happening on my truck.
