  • Flash is Shelly Materials EMD SD18m that unloads limestone hoppers in Kent, Ohio on the old Erie RR mainline. That section of track was know as Tallmadge Hill with a 1 % grade. CSX brings the trains from a Quarry at Cary Ohio, about 60 cars around 8200 to 8400 tons and up to 72 cars.
    Flash's Blue and Gold colors are Kent State University's Visit (Google )Akron Railroad Club for operation

    16 cylnder 567D motor with less than 2000 hp. In former Yugoslavia, these were branded as class 661, Croatian railways identification 2061. With the best horn ever. EMD really built excellent locos.

    This locomotive amazes me. To think it was built in the 50's with very simple technology with not to much horsepower, it handles over 4000 tons easier than some of its modern cousins. Just goes to show how good this older EMD power really is!

      it has a few "modern" upgrades as well!!

      Actually built in 1960 and subsequently re-engined with a mid-'60s-design engine. At low speed, tractive effort matters more than horsepower, so a locomotive like this will do just as well as any other six-axle locomotive of a similar weight. This loco, when built, had more tractive effort than an SD40 or SD50, but less than an SD40-2 and an SD70 would blow it out of the water. The SD18M has the tractive effort needed to get the train moving, but doesn't have the power to move it fast -- which is fine in this situation, of course.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to the burst the bubble...But many of the modern "cousins" would drag this thing even with it's brakes tied down.
      Modern locomotives,both EMD & GE,make 4,300-4,500 HP on average.
      These were only 1,200-1,800 HP if memory serves right,both with the 567 prime movers before the rebuilds with the 645 prime movers and removal of the high hoods with standard cabs.
      Noting the fact that it's low on power and uses DC traction motors,this thing would need more assistance to just do a switching duty and local job with heavy cars...DC doesn't have the best traction effort,that's why newer locomotives and some of the rebuilt ones have all got AC traction motors now.

    The old girl still puts in the work. This looks to be just about the limits of what she wants to pull. Especially getting started on those wet rails. Sounds like you guys had to feed her all of the onions to keep that one rolling. I love seeing old EMD power in action.

    This was DMIR 321 SD-M, a rebuilt SD-18. The third guage on the control stand looks like the old straight-air (orinoco) air guage. We still use straight air on the missabe. Look like the air flow meter was removed. They were mounted on top the control stand next to the radio. Nice to see missabe still working hard. Some days I wish we still had the 300's still here.

    Yeah I noticed the reading on his air pressure gauge was three degrees lower than it should be and the RPMs were over or pmdd and it's a really great engine though that engineer really pulled it out cuz you got everything back on time I love that guy he's my uncle Uncle Lloyd

    • @strobx1
      @strobx1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the load meter. Diesel locomotives do not have a tachometer! This shows how many amps he is drawing. They are running in what is called "Short Order" or "Short Time". There is a chart that tells how much time you
      can over load the electric traction motors and Generator with out damage, The max RPM's on an EMD 567 or 645 is 800 RPM. I only got to see one air brake gauge and it indicated 90 pounds on the equalizing reservoir(Train air brake) and the red arrow at zero indicating no pressure against the wheels= full release. Since it's on a siding the mileage is not that much so running it in short order might not be as damaging as one may think. I could see he reduced the throttle to get the loco out of the red short order. He held it right on the green or close to it which is the max amps continuous.

    Great video thanks! I was wondering when a road or locomotive manufacture would install a camera to view the couplers at either end of the locomotive for additional safety or efficiency.
    I can only imagine what a string of SD18's on the B&LE would have sounded like notch 8.

    The AC6000 are used where speed is important, such as intermodal. Every now and then they are used where needed.They are loved but need more fuel. You can't use over 2000 horse power basically until 10 mph. Traction is the key. Locomotive weight on the axle and number of axles determine what you can move. If I were to dream up a locomotive TODAY it would be a six axle GE AC6000,16 cyl GEVO WITH 46 inch wheels. COMPUTER CONTROL's KEY>>>

      Vents for the battery compartments. Hydrogen is a byproduct of lead/acid battery charge and discharge cycle. As it's highly explosive you don't want it to build up in an enclosed space.

    • @stephenhunter70
      @stephenhunter70 8 ปีที่แล้ว
