    In a world of snippets and twitter-length blurbs, may I say it is so refreshing and fulfilling (a blessing, really) to sit and enjoy a good ‘old fashioned sit-down-and-chat, story. And 4 months from start to finish is fast in my book! Thank you for sharing all of you, unapologetically, and richly full of time and talent. Beautiful quilt and I’m certain it will be a treasured quilt for your dear friend. ❤

    I love your words of encouragement. I have been sewing and quilting for over 50 years, and have had specific quilts in progress for years. I will finish them, when the right pieces come together. I have also completed quilts start to finish in a month, when a deadline (Christmas or birthday) loomed. Creating something beautiful and useful is truly a joy, and a quilt is a gift of love.

      Thank you, Pamela! ❤️ I think that reminder to pace as the quilt itself dictates is so needed---I know I need it so I thought I'd share. Glad to know it resonated with you! 🥰

    Oooh this retired science lady always appreciates a quilt story, and this was a good one! The long arm pattern reminded me of 60’s Formica counter tops.
    Please keep sharing the stories of your quilts. It’s so gratifying to hear.

    I think perhaps you have always had a secret love of bright purple and just never gave yourself to that 💘. Great quilt and fun story. I've enjoyed laughing over your fussing about the purple but also connect to the story because I, too, like the quilt and am a retired science teacher!

      You DO get a laugh about me and the purple shirt! 😂 and you may be right-maybe I’ve just needed to give in to the love of purple!

    I enjoyed this quilt story. The quilt is awesome! I watch Kate on The Last Homely House channel. She always has great wisdom to share. She talks about not rushing and enjoying the process. She's been working on a quilt for her granddaughter for three years. We all have a story and I think it's important for us to live and tell that story in a way that's authentically ours. Some people rush through to the next adventure, some meander and enjoy the journey. It's all beautiful to someone.
    I like to crochet and I'm not very fast. I also get impatient and tired of most projects about 75 percent in. I'm learning to enjoy the challenge of finishing so I can have the satisfaction of finished projects. Tonight I'm finishing the first afghan I've made for myself. I enjoyed every minute of it so I hope that means I've beaten my impatience :)
    Thank you for sharing Cathy!

      Thank you, Lilybee! ❤️ I, too, can get impatient and tired of a project-you’re right, sometimes it’s hard to stay with it so that you can have the satisfaction of completion!
      Congrats on your afghan! What an accomplishment!🤩I also crochet (not a lot, and not particularly well) and it takes FOR-EV-ER to make a whole blanket! 😂🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😱
      And ps I’ve recently started watching Last Homely House and she is a GEM!! ❤️

      @@TheCatBirdQuilts Well worth noting. I just pulled my first shirt from a family member's closet. I am saddened to think how many shirts were donated from our past without my giving quilting a second thought. Browsing over at the clothing section of the thrift stores I frequent expands my shopping to help recycle our past so rewarding. Boy, am I in trouble now! I think learning to get off the floor at 68 will be my greater challenge to come LOL I do agree that in this world these days everyone is in such a hurry like they are on a perpetual timeclock even post retirement. What a wonderful ending to the journey that purple quilt made for someone new. Who knows who will be inspired in the years to come...Thank you. Please continue to post on TH-cam. There is a certain comfort level to knowing I don't have to hop about to other social mediums. I think these days there are far too many choices for "surfing the net" (as they said in the old days) that the pre-occupation with discovering something new takes time away from the present time to create!

    Both sides of this quilt are absolutely beautiful! It is definitely a reversible quilt! Your friend can use the light side for spring and summer, then turn it over for a fall and winter quilt! She is a lucky lady! I hope she appreciates your time and work! Thank you so much!

    Hi Cathy 👋 thank you for sharing your quilting stories with us. In a world that is so digitally instantaneous I think people forget the pure joy of hand making and that it really does take time! Four months is quick in my book. Don't forget that you've done many other things in that time too! Not to mention providing fantastic content for our viewing pleasure.
    As a fellow op shop (opportunity shop as we call thrift stores here in Australia) lover I can appreciate how much fun it is to hunt and gather little treasures to use and upcycle into other useful and beautiful homewares. I have a thing for vintage linens, lace and embroidery so I cannot leave an op shop without checking if there are any pretty doyleys , placements and tablecloths to be had. I won't be skipping the men's shirt section any more either!
    I just love that you found exactly the right purpose for that ubiquitous purple shirt! 💜

    Good reminder that we don’t always have to buy expensive quilt cotton. Repurposing fabrics from shirts, pillow cases, etc. like our ancestors did is a great use of resources. Such a beautiful quilt. Love the quilting pattern as well. Great story. Thanks for sharing.

    What a stunner!!! I love a “process “ quilt. Each step of the way is just a part of the process. Some of my favorite quilts I’ve made involved choosing fabrics for blocks as I go. Picking the fabric, starching, ironing, cutting Adrienne then sewing the block then starting all over for the next one, two or three blocks. Even picking out the quilting is a process. It’s so great that you had a recipient in the end to help narrow down the choices! I also wait to choose a binding until the end, it helps to see how that choice will enhance the quilt. I named my youngest Elena, so now I am just going to have to make that quilt for her!

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much, Adrienne! ❤️it IS a process for sure-but every step has something about it I love and that makes it all worth it!

    That quilt ROCKS !!🤩😎🤩I have done a similar adaption for a backing of two recent quilts . Between my sister and I ,we have and obscene about of fabric. We decided that we will make all of our quilts with some combination of 'what we already have ' ! So the last two quilts that we have made have unique backs that are better than we imagined! Sometimes pushing outside your comfort zone is just what is needed!! Hurrah for you!!🤩🤩

    I would like to say "thank you" for your channel. I came across it early on and I was inspired by your free spirit approach. I had taken quilting classes and to be honest, I did not enjoy the process. You gave me the "okay" to just create and explore.....sounds odd I know, but I have learned more from you then the several hundred dollars I spent on class. No two quilts have been the same. I truly love the process now and look at material in a different way. Thank you 💕 and keep having "a lot to say" 😉

    Thank you for another awesome quilt story. I totally agree - the time it takes doesn't matter, its all about the process of producing a work of art - which it what it is. It would be easier (and quicker) to buy a matching set of fabrics, and a matching quilt back, but what you have done is amazing, those fabrics absolutely belong together, and you have done that, with your eye for colour and design! Love it - your friend obviously saw that too xx

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Sue! 🥰❤️ I do love the process, especially of putting the fabrics together and choosing a pattern that works with them-it might be easier to buy matching fabrics, but then I wouldn’t get to do what is the most fun part to me!

    Lovely! I spent most of the video in suspense... I spotted the binding and though, "Wait, wasn't that a small? There's no WAY she had enough of that! I've not yet started quilting, but I did one (1) granny square for Halloween after not crocheting for a long while and got miffed. I really REALLY needed that calming pep talk. I'm going to pick it up again and at least get a pillow's worth of squares!

    Firstly, that purple shirt, oh it is delight! Purple is my favourite colour, any shade of it.🥰
    Secondly, the quilt you've made is as bright as it is elegant! 😍
    And thirdly, I'm making a quilt! 🫣
    Well, not just me, it is a community quilt, members of our local community make one square each, that includes our Ukrainian 🇺🇦🇬🇧 refugees, and my job is to assemble the top, make a "sandwich", quilt it and bind it.
    Wish me luck! 🌻🌻🌻

    Love your casual discussion about “Elena Quilt” and it’s absolutely beautiful! You actually made a two sided quilt Cathy. Many years ago I went to a half day quilt class at the Sully Plantation in Fairfax VA, where the woman doing the class went into great detail about the whole process of quilt making and one young lady wanted to know how long it takes to make a quilt, so the instructor said that it depends, for there are times the pattern, the colors come right away and other times it takes longer. If she is making a quilt for a specific room, she lays the fabrics in that room to see how they look with the changing of light and sometimes there are changes that she makes. The professional quilters/pattern and fabric designers have deadlines that they have to make. Most of their work comes from drawings which is used for the fabric and then the pattern comes after. Many of them also have individuals that help with the sewing. Artistic endeavors aren’t made with a blink of an eye, they are a creation of a vision, something that you saw, so remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day and an a artistic creations do not come to fruition with a snap of a finger.

    Your quilt is stunning and the Science Lady is so lucky to have you as a friend. 💕💕💕. I have watched this quilt from the beginning of the purple shirt and there has always been “something” about this quilt that has occupied space in my brain. As in something to resolve. Today I know what that is - there is no green. I think this no-green design choice elevates the design a hundred fold. With the green, it would be very colour-wheely (new phrase) and weirdly less harmonious. I would very much love and support you if you took a 2 or 3 inch square of The Purple Shirt fabric, framed it and hung it in your sewing room or other pride of place. Include a little plaque. Because that’s how you treat a legend. Thank you as always for sharing your passion and your science and joy. 💕

    It is vacation morning and I am sitting in bed, hand stitching the signatures of family members on a reunion quilt and binge-watching Cat Bird Quilts. Yes, some take a long time. This reunion quilt has blocks that were signed last July, sewn into a quilt top, and I just felt that all this work would be for naught if the signatures faded after a few washes. So I am hand embroidering over ever name to make them last for years. Yep, the journey is worth it! My side note (😂) we will raffle it this year to pay for the pavilion.
