I'm so sorry gang--the last minute or so of the upload was cut short, during H 'Jennifer' See the full review right here: th-cam.com/video/hlb1GmuAFSM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8Qdq933foDSXEi5x
Great video (as always 😊) one thousand subscribers!! Congratulations!!!!
Thanks SO MUCH!!!
Your videos give such a friendly and fun vibe. It’s like I’m at a friend’s home, sipping some coffee and chatting about plants. ❤ thank you ☺️
That means so much. When I told my wife I wanted to start this channel, I told her that my goal was going to do exactly what you said above. Just be myself, because I was quite certain that no one would ever see the videos, so it wouldn't matter *at all* 😆 Thanks for all your support!
It's too late. Goodnight. Thank you!!
Rebecca had herself a little hissy fit!!!!!
We shan’t be mentioning her name for the foreseeable future 🤣😫🤣
that cliffhanger, tho. what about Jennifer!?
Oh no!!! The upload got cut off for the last minute or so. Short story shorter: H 'Jennifer' is an absolutely ferociously fantastically wonderful plant 🤣 You'll see her again soon in my Hoya 101 video. Thanks so much for pointing this out!
I'm here for a look at how the big boys do it. I bought my only hoya May 6th and I may be hallucinating but I think her main stem has grown. She is alive, leaves firm, no dying leaves so I'm taking that as a win! Good job on your beautiful plants!!!
Thanks much! What did you choose for your first Hoya??
@@soberplantguykerrii
I think Hoya's are te easyiest plants to take care of
Whoa whoa whoa -- you're going to blow my gig here 🤣😂🤣
@@soberplantguy 😄😄
All my “ingredients “ I ordered that you use will be in today! Excited to transfer some over. It’s a joy watching you and congratulations on a 1000! It will be 10,000 in a minute.
10,000 ?? You're more of a born optimist than even I am 🤣😂🤣 If there's a cheaper way to make a mix that works absolutely fantastically, I don't know about it. All you need to do is decide what ratio you prefer. In other words, are you a steady Freddie waterer like me, or an infrequent waterer like ... many? Thanks for the comments!
another notch on your belt! Do I need to say "told you so "on the increasing exploding #s. BTW have you seen the hybrid from Japan? Looks like a the unique hoya version of orchid petals small form. Beyond stunning, going for a cool 2G$ Starts with an M, sorry can't remember full name, the sheer beauty & price twisted my brain!
Ah, thanks so much! And truthfully ... I don't need to know the name of a 2k plant 🤣😂🤣
Woohoo 1k subs yay 🎉 Congrats Dave!
Thanks so much! You must have been one of the very first subscribers? ☺
All of your props look amazing! I am so jealous of your NGG! Mine just looks leggy and sad. lol
Thank you! I really appreciate your jealousy 🤣😂🤣 Kidding, kidding! I very nearly killed mine when it was quite young. It does get quite bright light. Cheers from Iowa
Congratulations on 1k! I want to buy one of your exoticas! Where do you list your sale plants? ❤
Hey, thanks! As for plants: feel free to email me at soberplantguy.com and I'll be delighted to send you some pics ☺
Wonderful plant update! I am optimistic for your Sunrise!
Just so happens I like big giant dorks!
I have one of my own
🤭
How goes your repotting? Success stories? Weeping into your soil stories? (Some of each? 🤣)
Most Hoya for me just continue whatever it is they were doing before the repot…. Too much success there
However I did propagate one of my 3 Anthuriums in January (Pedatoradiatum fingers) and both the trunk and the top cutting are only starting to grow again recently. That was quite stressful since it is a plant that is difficult to get here. Thats still no weeping 🤔
Anything but Piper and Aglaonema that I tried to put in pon failed miserably though.
Though with the Alocasia the trunks could be rerooted in moss (and now they are loving unmixed tree fern fibre).
Hmm, I only have these stressful and annoying things but no weeping stories, sorry..
Maybe when plants are frequently being checked on, most failures can still can be corrected (be it by cuttings) and then the saving makes any story a satisfying success?
Like with your Hoya Sunrise. It was still propagatable (making up words here) and can grow into a gorgeous plant again
Oh oh I do have a sad one!!
I purchased a quite expensive Hoya cutting from a shop that I trust. It was a top cutting and because I trusted the shop I didn’t question it (my bad). The cutting dropped its leaves and rotted within a week 😔 And only afterwards I realized that there actually had been no mature leaves! Of course the shop did nothing.
This is the only Hoya cutting out of many many many that has died on me.
I purchased it again when it became available again (from the same shop since I really wanted that Hoya and noone else seemed to have it) with a note to please wait with on shipping until all leaves of my order had hardened off. The second cutting was successful and has grown several leaves. 🥳
There you go, sad story with a happy ending 🌸🌱
@@Wubblyt That's how I do it selling a plant. If there's a vine with mostly baby leaves, I probably won't ship it. If it's a strong vine with good nodes, I let the buyer know that the baby leaves won't make it, but it'll recover nicely.
Yep, there's lots of recycled advice out there about what Hoya *won't* do, and of course early on I believed it must be true. Then I started doing what successful growers were doing. Pretty basic math there 🤣😁🤣
@@soberplantguy As long as there are mature leaves, something will grow!
In the case of that one cutting it was also my bad for not checking if the leaves had hardened off, it was a thinner leaved small leaved Hoya and sometimes the leaves in certain conditions stay smaller (as example: I received tiny leaves on a Hoya aff Lambii cutting, but what it grew here is the normal quite large size leaves). So I felt that the slightly limp leaves were due to the shipping and didn’t even think about immaturity until it was too late. It was a good lesson!
Trial and error and learning your own “mistakes” and from people with large plants that do well (like yours) is the way!
Theres no point in copying tips and tricks from people who mostly have non growing 2-6 leaves cuttings or who just bought a big plant to start with 😂 (hope I am not offending anyone here)
You have the magic Hoya touch! 🌟 It's so fun to see updates on your beauties. 🤗
Please don't overthink your possible future setup video. You're so fun to watch and hear. Just be yourself! You're fantastic! 🌟
Thanks for the kind words, and encouragement!
Do you use your "magic potion" on your Hoya? ( Dr Woods, etc)
Oh yes I do ! I try for monthly during the growing season. Cheers from Iowa 😁
Thanks so much!! Really enjoy your videos 😊
i found this to be a very satisfying update video as someone who has watched (& possibly rewatched) all of these repots/potting-ups.
but mostly i wanted to say congratulations on hitting 1k (!!), though i am also not suprised by it. =)
Thank you so much for the support! Holy cats-you are truly an OG 😁
I'm replaying this video for 3 hoyas I purchased April 5 that have done diddly squat. Washed them down with a mix similar to yours, changed the substrate, and have begun to mist with a marine enhancer. A Carnosa verigated (sp?), a Tsangii, and a Pubicalyx splash (sp?). Congratulations on reaching 1K! 👍🇨🇦
Thanks so much! Some Hoya explode with growth, and some ... refuse our demands 🤣😂🤣
Thanks for the mythbusting!
I dont think there are many (if any) slow growing Hoya, only imperfect conditions.
And short and long term updates are so good to see 🌱
I hope Rebecca wont throw a second fit 😂
I had the same thing with Krohniana silver when I moved it out of the tent recently (where it was temporarily for better/faster rooting into its new pot) it dropped some peduncles but thankfully it is now back on track making new peduncles and leaves.
She was just offering you a serenity check 🤣 Whatever "Rebecca' thinks she's proving, 'Jennifer' is making up for! Wish that video hadn't been cut short. Thanks for the nice comments!
“What are you doing, didnt you know I liked living there!”
“Oh wait, here is actually quite nice too”
Im sure there will be an opportunity to show (off) Hoya Jennifer again 😊
@@Wubblyt Oh, you'll get sick of of her, to be sure 🤣😂🤣
@@soberplantguy Thats perfectly fine, what better way to get sick than by seeing a plant doing well 😂
Maybe she is your “ambassador Hoya”
How often do you water your Hoya propagations propped directly In your regular substrate?
I put them in a prop box with a base perlite that's been wetted down, so they stay moist in that environment. When I pull them out, I'm very careful to keep them moist for a couple of weeks, or at least I pull back on the moisture slowly....
Again, your plants are AMAZING! I also do not baby my hoya. They do absolutely fine and they are always growing.
Shoot, I've had straight-up interventions with mine ... 🤣😂🤣
Oh yeah, your sunrise will be back to her glory days soon enough! - Dammmmnnnn, that obscura is amazing! I really wish you hadn't shown it 😵💫🤸♀ 🍀 Congrats on hitting over 1k, and just since I started watching earlier this evening you are now at 1.01 woo-hoo!
That's so kind of you to notice my tiny, but big for me, deal ! That H obscura sure is a beauty. Seed-grown to that in very little time. I've got some really special larger-leaved girls coming up ☺
Hi Dave, I love your new guinea ghost, how did you Sunstress yours so beautiful? I’ve been trying to Sunstress mine but have had no luck yet, I have mine under a Barrina T5 grow light.
Ah, yes. Agreed. A single T5 probably won't do it. I have that under a T8. For my T5s, I use a trio on relatively tall spacing between shelves. Amazon has been doing great sales on the T8, so check that out if you're in the market!
Love plant update videos! All your plants are growing beautifully! Many thanks for including the Cebu Blue at the end of your video. It’s an all time favorite of mine and it’s fun to propagate. I have a Mother plant and four 6 in pots of Cebu Blue scattered around the house and in my sunroom. I got a lot of joy from seeing your plants doing so well. Many thanks! 👌🪴🥰
Thank you! 😊
Wow. That WAS a huge tease. I don’t know if I can do this anymore… 😉
Same 😆
I have ONE hoya plant which I love. Have no idea what its name is. I've taken cuttings and would like to know where to get the wire trellises.
Hello! How does one end up with only ONE Hoya? I've never heard of such a thing 🤣🤣🤣 This may not be practical for you, but I built my Hoya trellises. Vid is here if you want to take a look: th-cam.com/video/hlb1GmuAFSM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8Qdq933foDSXEi5x
When will you have another Hoya Sale?
Hi, Mildred. I'm always happy to provide a list of available plant, and pics! You can reach me at soberplantguy@gmail.com. Cheers from Iowa
How does one find your plants for sale? Thank you
Hi, Genny. You can reach out to soberplantguy@gmail.com. Cheers from Iowa City 😀
I'm way behind my plant chores and it is very motivating to see your success stories.
Good! -- then it's working both ways 😁
How can I buy from you? I haven’t found a place to do that!
I know--trying to keep that info secret 🤣 While I should probably setup something easier soon, you can reach me at soberplantguy@gmail.com
Cheers from Iowa City ☺
💚💚💚🪴👌🏻
Thanks for the plant love ☺
Seems like you're constantly propagating. How is your home not overrun with plants?!

@@soberplantguy ROFLMAO
This year I took a gamble and put my bigger Hoya plants in the greenhouse. They’ve either exploded with new growth or languished sadly. I appreciate the updates on each individual plant’s progress 😊
You bet! Is the greenhouse just to hot for them?
@@soberplantguy once it hit 40C because I forgot to open a door and that hit my Australis, Lisa, and Krimson Queen pretty hard, although since they are in semi-hydro they lived. The H pub splash took all the heat and sun it could get and asked for more, as did the plain old carnosa (which is in dirt). I’m in the PNW and put them out in April , and I think I will take them inside at the end of September. It’s a fun experiment if they live !
Love your Hoya videos. I’m trying to find a good size perlite and was wondering could you show the one you use. The perlite we find at Lowes, Home Depot and nurseries are smaller and have a lot of dust in it. I want something bigger but not huge and for a good price. And can you show the bag. I’m finding different sizes shown on different brands like cu ft or quarts and I don’t know how to compare that. Tfs
Ah, thanks so much! Don't get me started on perlite (I did that in my product recommendations video 🤣). Check my links, and you'll see the perlite that I use. If that's way too much for you, there are sellers who offer smaller quantities. Finding good perlite was a serious game changer!
@@soberplantguy thank you
Hello again Dave. I’m pretty new to your channel and so far it’s been super helpful. I’m just getting into Hoyas and you will be the first I go to for great info. I was wondering if you know about the PalmStreet app or if your on there already. I think it would be awesome place for you to sell some plants and we get to talk to you in a real time chat. You’re so funny and I think us fans would love it.
That going live makes me …. Nervous 😬
Glad you’re finding the videos useful!!
They all look great to me but I’m an intermediate grower. I would like to know where you get those cylindrical trellises?
Thank you! I make those myself, and you can easily make your own after watching this: th-cam.com/video/Y8E2SMalYA4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hL9BNf-m_1bg6PiU Be well ☺
Awesome. Thanks for your help.
Congrats on 1k 🎉
Thank you! I really appreciate your support ☺
@@soberplantguy Us hoya lovers have to be there for one another!
Well Dave, as usual I leave your video and have to update my wish list. Your plants are amazing and I have to get a Cebu Blue... .also love your sense of humour, cracked me up about Iris's husband...😅
Glad you liked my dismissal of the husband 🤣 We've all heard enough about men at this point 😅 And yes, yes, yes you do need a Cebu Blue........
I've got a H. Serpens Spash cutting that I just rooted and potted up that may not make it. Growing plants is fun. Congrats on 1000! Thanks for the update video!
Thanks so much! 1000 is a very small, but big achievement for me ☺ *Growing* plants is the absolute best. I hope your serpens hangs in there. Absolutely gorgeous plants.
@@soberplantguy I don't know what I'd do if 100 people knew me - can't imagine 1000! You're still a new kid on the block, give it time. Thankfully, I have 3 or more other Serpens. lol
