my father is a retired butcher, when I was a teenager, late 70's early 80's he would bring home, every weeks that chicken was on sale, about 8 to 10 pounds of fresh chicken wings that nobody wanted to eat back then, and we would make chicken broth with them and sandwiches with the cooked meat ... now they are the most expensive part of chicken

As a dad gum Yankee from Minnesota, when I was growing up in the 70's, my mom would cook drumsticks. At the time, they were the most affordable. In the summertime, Dad would like to grill them. He would use a brush or butter knife to slather BBQ sauce on them.

A lot of restaurants claim to have "invented" something, when the more accurate term would be "introduced" to the locals.
Especially in America, and to a lesser extent Australia, where a lot of international food was introduced slowly, first through travelling merchants, and later immigration. For example, the pizza didn't exist here in Australia till after WW2, when soldiers brought the recipe back, and Italians/Europeans settled in large numbers. Then you'd have local restaurants claim to be the "home" of the pizza in Australia, etc etc.
So it's easy to see how in the pre-mass communication/internet world, someone could get away with claiming to have "invented" the chicken wing and nobody could dispute it. But now someone says they invented spicy chicken wings, and we can all go on Google instantly to find out Asian cultures were cooking chicken wings for thousands of years before America was even discovered by Europeans.

Considering it was the 80s, the best place for Wings in Rochester, as well as the hottest would have been Jeremiah's. Next best would have been Long Pond Pub or Casey Jones depending on who was the cook at the time. It would be nice to know which hotel he was talking about, so then anyone who lived in Rochester during that time would have a better idea as to which restaurant it was. (Probably one downtown.)

And Jim is right, the amount of sauce used is critical to good chicken wings. The place down the street from me has beautiful wings, but it over-sauces them and the result is they get slimey.

Growing up near the original Quaker Steak and Lube, wings were ubiquitous. Every bar tried to outdo "the Lube," so they were plentiful, cheap and delicious.

Well he was born in Louisville KY in 1961 and wings were invented in Buffalo NY in 1964. Took a while for most people to even get a chance to discover them!

It's really odd when Jim recounts these stories and names the different restaurants and their specialities because here in the UK we don't have that. It's either McDonald's,KFC or Five Guys. We don't seem to have the variety of chains that the States have.

I've never been big on wings, but I'll eat a couple if that's what's there. Thing is I'm terrible with things like that. a couple bites and I throw the rest away, I don't like the gelatinous stuff and I see people I work with just ready to eat the bone and everything lol

Health experts tell us it's OK to eat chicken... just use the lean breasts, remove the skin, don't fry them, use a low calorie sauce, and eat small portions.
So chicken wing lovers do the exact opposite.
Back in the old days, wings were cheap because they had no meat on the bones.
But you wouldn't just throw them away... you'd throw them into a big 'ol stock pot and simmer for hours, along with onions, carrots, and celery. They make the BEST chicken stock.
Then you can throw the spent wings away.
Unfortunately with the price of wings these days, this makes no sense anymore.

seeing the prices of wings go up as they have over the past few years is one of the many reasons this timeline sucks
