    How would a cow *losing* weight lead to *increased* pressure on her feet?

    • @TheHoofGP
      @TheHoofGP  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5481

      Because when a cow loses weight, just as when a human loses weight, they lose fat from all over the body - cows feet have a "digital cushion", which is made up of fat cells, between the bone in the foot and the horn of her hoof capsule - the cushion should be in between the bone and the, flesh and the horn ... if the cow has lost weight she has also lost a significant amount of her digital cushion so there is no protection between the bone, flesh and horn which leads to big problems. Imagine having a shoe on your feet with no insole within it ... your feet would hurt because there would be no cushioning

It would make zero sense to mistreat or to not look after the welfare of farm animals even if simply from an economic perspective. Also if you’ve got a herd of 100 cows it’s got to be tricky naming every one and remembering them. Also, also, I’m not sure cows have the cognitive ability to feel differently about being referred to as “one three two” or “Daisy-Bell”. The horses were in top condition and well kept. clean. warm. well fed. The farrier was busy keeping them shod. It was all hoof work. Suppose wet all day is a bit like trench foot..

    More importantly than "perfect" is comfort & progress, which you have clearly made happen here. As you said, she's gained weight and has increased production. Compared to the first video where she didn't really want to move at all and walked so gingerly with every step, you have done soooo much to improve her life.

    In my opinion, when you started this journey, you may have underestimated a wee bit those of us who are not educated in the world of cow. 🐄 Since we only saw her infrequently, we needed you, (the one who could reach out and touch her!), to let us know how she was. Yes. 😬 We are an impatient lot, lol. This has been a learning experience for all of us. I don't know another channel with intensive hoof care, follow through, and follow up visits. Maybe there are viewers whose pets need constant monitoring and care to keep a paw, etc. by the vet at a set time period and can relate.
    Hoof care is probably new to a lot of us. Who doesn't want the knight on the rearing black steed to take up the sword and defend against the evil and save the day!!
    We will all be able to look back and say, if it weren't for the excellent care of the farmer, the dairymen, the vet, and our very own Hoof GP, she wouldn't be here today. You're a star 🌟 Graeme. I believe in you.

    I can hear the emotion in you're voice, watching these in order one after the other, the improvement is clear. She was in so much pain & has come so far. Unfortunately there's set backs because of how long healthy horn takes to grow & how bad her hooves were at the start. In a perfect world she wouldn't get any more issues or damage, but that's not what happens, she's walking about & standing, because she's not in pain thanks to you. She's gaining weight which is very important.
