For those not around at the time... It's Australia, 1977. Anna is back stage changing for the next song.. THIS is the (NOW CLASSIC!) stage performance that scorched Frida indelibly into every male brain that ever saw this. Many consider this her best ever live performance ! Ever see a girl rock a song like this? She was gorgeous, smokin hot, into the song, perfect pitch with arguably one of the best mezzo soprano voices ever, and having the time of her life!
The record crowd, all fans, were delirious!
If this doesn't get you going, you don't have it nearly loud enough, ...... or you have my deepest sympathy... (!)

The song is originally from the Arrival album. An earlier version of this song, called Happy Hawaii, was on the B-side of Knowing Me, Knowing You. This performance was in Australia and is from ABBA The Movie. Agnetha is getting changed for the mini musical "The Girl With the Golden Hair" which they performed in these shows. Benny's instrumental "Intermezzo No.1" followed this which gave Frida time to get changed as well

Agnetha was changing into her outfit for the next mini musical trio of songs. Frida went to change after this whilst there was a slight musical interlude. Great shows : )

Frida had a lot of amazing live performances. I love 'Me and I' and 'Super Trouper' from the Dick Cavett live show, though ABBA was coming to an end, and they all looked really sad. 'Fernando', 'Knowing Me Knowing You', 'I have a dream' --- she did stunning versions of them live. Check out her live rendition of Pat Benatar's 'Fire and Ice', unbeatable.

They didn't look sad at all on stage, rather the opposite.

@@nielsulriksrensen9818 "At the Dick Cavett show" (although that live performance was recorded in Stockholm). The only sad face I saw was Agnetha during the very nostalgic "Slipping through my fingers". Othervise they obviously feel good on stage there, all of them, Abba as well as studio musicians and choir.

I'm Swedish and grew up with ABBA but it wasn't until I moved to London that I realized how BIG they were/ARE!
Love your reactions my friend- keep going please.

ABBAs songs are full of catchy and happy melodies; you get in such a good mood when you listen to ABBA. Their music pick you up when you are down or in a depression. Make you want to dance and celebrate being alive. The music is effortless, and yet so complex in all their different layers. In my opinion, Benny Andersson is one of the very best composers of our time.
When you really and fully understand the text of ABBA songs, you will be amazed of the depth in the lyrics and the phenomenal insights in the challenges of being human. This ability allows us to easily identify with the lyrics. I do not know of any other group that can captivate me and enchant me like ABBA. Their music and lyrics are magical.
Neither do I know of any other group that can evoke as many different and genuine emotions and feelings in me as ABBA do. This is a rare talent that ABBA have in abundance.
I go as far as to say that this talent makes their music and lyrics a real healing on a very deep, unconscious level. So, in these very turbulent, chaotic and uncertain times, ABBA has a HUGE mission.
    Love from Lena

Not one of my favorite ABBA songs, however, their stage presence and personality sells the song and I enjoy the song more watching this live performance and my God Frida is so beautiful and her enjoyment performing is so infectious. I enjoy Agnetha as well, but, I know I’m going to piss of a lot of my fellow ABBA fans, but, she doesn’t hold a candle to Frida in as far as personality and charisma on stage.

Video is from the film Abba The Movie; and was filmed during their Australian tour in 77; during that tour they performed a mini-musical mid show and Agnetha was backstage getting changed for that part of the performance. On the record they both sing.

The performance was from their Australian tour in 1977 which was featured in ABBA The Movie. The recorded song is off the Arrival album. This song featured both girls on the record, but this performance was featured Frida, while Agnetha was off on a costume change I think.

The whole wembley performance including their "Summer night city live" and "The way old friends do" is fantastic (they did play different songs on different nights however so I'm not sure all of them or their best is recorded on one night altogether. A night is recorded plus some separate performances from.other nights perhaps. Although also summer night city is also fantastic to hear the studio version as such first. Different sounds. ABBA - the movie (featuring their Australian live. performances) is probably the best thing out there if you can find it somehow on amazon or whatever.

Thanks for the reaction. Don't know if it's her best but certainly up there. Doing stuff from Wembley is a good idea. The live stuff just has more energy. Their band was pretty big but basically just the session musicians they used in the studio. The Dick Cavett footage is good too. Shows them with a very stripped down group as the band. Thanks again for sharing.

How good yo see you again with ABBA, I am pleased that you have come to one of their live performances, the memorable tours in Australia 1977 and London 1979
"Why did it have to be me" is from the album Arrival (1976)
on the tour it is the moment that Agnetha was going to change and make up for the next number, the mini musical "The Girl with the Golden Hair" that had Her alone in the first song (the future "Thank you for the music")
That is why Frida takes the leading role in her and displays her greatest talents as a showwoman
For future live performances I suggest:
    1) from Australia 77
    "Tiger"
the beginning with rain and wind
    "He is your brother"
    a cute number from 1972
    2) from London 1979
    "Sunmer night city"
you already made the official video
    "Does your mother know
    & Hole in your soul"
the unmissable and insurmountable closing of the concert

  • @krisa990

This song is not only one of their many many great songs, its also in my view,as far as Ive seen and heard their live performances, one of their better live performances. The song sounds very close to the studio recording quality here and even improved in some ways by this deliverance of ABBA in Sydney 1977. Very few groups had such good live performances as ABBA,and then its important to have in mind how professional and before their time their studio recording quality was. The result became their timeless music that still today is very popular to many people. No other music group have had this timeless quality, this great live and studio performances as ABBA. Concerning the lyrics, its also up there in the absolut top levels,if there is something one may or may not agree with personally, think that things can be interpreted differently depending on how you look at things, see things. I agree, men are not toys to be thrown away, but the lyrics shouldnt be interpreted like gospel words here. At any rate, the music and vocal performances is always of greater importance for the quality of the song then the lyrics. You can have the best lyrics in the world, but if you dont have a good song, a good melody and good vocals, then it doesnt matter a thing.

Disrespectful lyrics? I think you shouldn't feel addressed by the lyrics personally (and also all other men if there are some who are doing that). The song is about a woman who only wanted a ONS from a man, but this man fell in love with her and wants more than a ONS, but she doesn't want and so he feels like he was just a toy for her and asks her "Why did it have to be me?" Nothing disrespectful against men in general in my opinion.
