Such a gorgeous book - each shed is unique and inspiring, and I love all the tiny details Kotite features to help readers imagine how to create their own She Sheds th-cam.com/users/postUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR . The feature on Dinah's Rustic Retreat is like something from a fairy tale. It's really inspiring to see how creative all these ordinary people are in making beautiful and useful spaces on a modest scale.

Fair play to them , they took a risk and it payed off. Many of the people writing horrible comments are probably slaves to the banks and just jealous of what they have achieved on a small budget. They wouldn’t have the balls, skills or determination to do this themselves. Beautiful house, beautiful location and a beautiful family. Best of luck to them ☘️

Well, I am not going to write any bad comments about them, because it's their life and I just don't care all that much. But as to your moonbeaming comment, people have to be "slaves" to reality. If they don't have enough money to buy the materials to even do it themselves, and they gave up their jobs so they can't make any more money, then their entire plan is to get as far as they can and hope someone else finishes it for them. In other words, from the onset, they plan to become a burden on someone else in their family. So, no, that is not "fair play" on them.
      "Hope" is not a strategy.
Now, I am only 17 minutes in to the video. I have no idea how this all turns out. But at this point, I am just wondering how long until Ireland's version is Child Protective Services comes out there to take that kid away.
      We'll see what happens.

God bless grandma for donating the money they needed to finish! I am amazed at the labor this man was able to accomplish on his own. I couldn't believe it when they added cows to the burden. Throughout this episode my jaw kept dropping. They did achieve what seemed impossible, and they have a lovely home. Kudos for achieving this renovation on $30,000. But this shouldn't be taken as an example of how much you can achieve without knowing anything. If it weren't for the injection of money from family, they would still be sitting in an unfinished house.

    • @krisg3984
      @krisg3984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Yes, $30K wasn’t enough. But families come together. That was heart-warning and that Granny didn’t look like the type to give it if she didn’t want to. What a blessing, to be rid of a mortgage for life ! It will help them as well as their next generation, a real leg-up in financial wealth. Hope it worked out and the happy years followed. I’m sure this man has confidence in himself, and good things followed.

A lovely family. I'm so glad the family / grandma had compassion to help out.
That's what families should do. We put money ( or time and energy) into what and whom we value.
Valuing family is the greatest treasure.
I've worked years on missionfield in poor countries and they are so generous and rich in family life.
( not selfish like a lot of us westerners)
I was soooo happy to see this family achieve their dream....and I'm glad they are not sitting in an unfinished home.

Unfortunately this approach is very common, people with little or no money and no research into what's involved come to Ireland and have this idea they are living self sufficient. They don't take into consideration that because of the isolation and the fact that you are operating like a micro farmer you will need transport. Running a motor vehicle in Ireland is very expensive. You will also have property tax and who pays for your health care, it's not free in Ireland.
Very often this way of living can cause more financial stress. Look at the statistics on farmer suicides in Ireland.
Most will fail or become a liability on the State.
If you are doing this in Ireland you need a guaranteed income and that usually comes from a day job!

    • @greenknitter

Transport is indeed expensive, no doubt. Property tax is far less than some other EU countries but depends on the value of the house and what local authority it's in. I pay €95 a year only on my cottage. Healthcare depends on whether your income is under a certain threshold and qualify for public healthcare and a medical card, in which case it is almost free. Or you go private like about half the population and pay average €2k per annum for an individual, but can be as low as €400.
Farmer suicides in Ireland are related to more than just income and rates are comparable to those in Scotland and Australia. Rural isolation, migration leading to loss of community and family, changes in agriculture all play a part too.
I don't know the failure rate but as the saying goes "fail to prepare or prepare to fail". This family had a succeed at all cost attitude, he is good at DIY, a source of income from her sewing plus family money as a back up so they made it in spite of poor planning and an unrealistic budget.
Certainly a guaranteed income helps enormously, but that doesn't necessarily mean a 9-5 job. Having land means you can earn money from it growing your own, renting outbuilding in Airbnb, having your own business wfh, keeping livestock and so on. The pandemic has seen a huge number of people leave cities here and move to the countryside to work remotely. So long as the internet is good it's a much better way of life, especially for families.

I found it frustrating how naive they were about the deadline they set and the budget they had, their lack of knowledge on construction which was the cause of their frustrations. The roofing situation was so fecking irritating as they chose to continue forward on the interior and store their materials inside. It broke my heart when the child was asking mam to play with her. She must have felt so isolated after being moved from all her friends etc. Im happy for them now, the house looks gorgeous.
I know Im about 2 hours away from them but if I was local I would have no bother lending a hand, which Im sure locals would have done I'm sure :)

These programmes are heavily edited for dramatic effect. Much of what really happened is excluded, and much of what appears to happen in convoluted. Notice that every episode has a "nearly failed" moment. In their case it was money running out. I believe they knew all along the money was due from the mother-in-law (probably an early inheritance) but it makes for better tv to re-edit it into something more dramatic.

Both of them held on to their dream with such tenacity.
And it paid off. There is so much to be proud off. Bringing alive notonly a ramshackle building , but the farm adjacent to it.
Each time George dropped by to follow the progress made, , I kept hoping that he would help them in a small way to tide them through their tough times.
So glad Grandma helped out in la big way. God bless her.

I think this couple got more bang for the buck in this restoration than any of the others I have seen! I just love how she was able to decorate the place to make it look like a charming country home! I felt sorry for Chris because he had to take on a superhuman job which I was afraid would kill him! Moving those big heavy timber’s by yourself is very dangerous work! I am surprised he didn’t give himself a rupture or drop a big timber on himself! He must have figured out ingenious ways of hoisting those roof supports into place! He really showed how much he loves his family by doing this Herculean task all by himself! His wife knew him very well when she said he could do it because he always did everything to a very high standard! Congratulations you two on a superhuman job very well done! I am very impressed at how much you two accomplished! Amazing job! The house looks like a scene from a fairytale!

". . . . a five year old who hasn't had a bedroom for 7 months." (play sad music) I never had a bedroom for 18 years at which time I left home and got a trailer to live in. I did, however, have a couch to sleep on. What is all this: every child must have his or her own separate bedroom? I know my mother and her sisters had their own bedroom with one bed, so I always envied her a bit, but her family wouldn't have dreamed building a larger house so each child had their own, private, room. Her brothers shared a second bedroom. My two sons shared a room, but had bunks. It seems most people I have known that their children shared a room with a sibling. I also knew of some, who like me, had a couch for a bed. One family I knew had four or five kids in a one bedroom, I think hardships make you so much more appreciative and give you a new level of understanding of what this world is like for the majority of the people in it. Meanwhile, I could not seem to muster an awful lot of sympathy for the daughter, only a tingle of envy. She is living in a piece of heaven. I LOVE the little house and garden.

It is preferable. I slept on a pull our sofa bed with both my parents until the age of 12 when they could afford to furnish the living room and they took that as their bedroom and I was left with the old bedroom. It was a one bedroom apartment so they didn't have much of a choice, but it's nice to have some privacy, both for the parents and the children, if possible, of course.

This is stupid. There is no way on earth they managed to buy all the materials, luxury rayburn cooker, new windows and a completely new roof, plus living expenses on £14,000.They must be at least claiming benefits. Growing your own lettuce is all very well but you cannot grow your own soap powder, toilet rolls, tea coffee, cereal, milk butter etc. Electricity and water have to be paid for along with council tax, school uniforms and school dinners. I have done a similar renovation some years ago and the roof alone cost me £28,000 and the total build around £80,000 doing most of the work myself.

This is the problem, most of there projects fail. I bought an old house in the west of Ireland with 5 acres. I purchased it from a couple who returned to the North of England. Even though I could do the plumbing and electrics and a lot of the donkey work it still cost €90k it complete. I still work for a UK company and pay Irish income tax and social insurance. I don't have any animals as they would require me to be there all the time. What I am doing is growing native irish trees to be replanted where ever they are needed all over Ireland. This is going to take 4 or 5 years to get going properly. Too many people expect the State to support their endeavors!
