love the improved steps like the vacuum bag inclusion and doing the layers much faster i would also recommend use of either a heat gun, blow torch, or a spray bottle of acetone to help prevent as many bubbles on the surface in the future :)
One tip for the vacuum bag: get it to around 70% of the air out and start to use a squeegee to remove any air pockets above the carbon to get a mirror smooth finish. Than suck more air out -> squeegee air pockets -> and repeat till there are no more air pockets on the carbon surface. Also Mylar sheets over the last layer of carbon can give you a really glossy molding finish. After the vacuum, just peel the Mylar away.
I really need to admire your dedication to this. The amount of work you put in to every part is mind boggling. And the results look nothing short of amazing! Respect!
Excellent instructional video! I've been putting off a carbon fiber wrapping project for a long time, because it will be my first one and I've a bit of uncertainty how it may turn out. But your video just gave me the 'push' I needed to finally give it a shot! Mine will be the inside area of a headlight housing. It definitely has some curves that I'll need to workout but I have a spare/damaged one to practice on. There are a lot of bad things about the internet, this is one of the great things about the internet! Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. #subscribed
I enjoy watching the manufacturing and conversion of parts to carbon fiber e.g. for weight reduction but what’s the point of wrapping beyond the visual effect? (Not to mention that it also adds weight) You could just buy carbon fiber wrap and get the same look with less effort
@@walterheisenberg1013 , each person may have their own reasons for whatever or whichever path they go with. I don't think that carbon fiber vinyl wrap is going to give you the same look as actual carbon fiber. I do agree with you that the main reason would/should be for its strength and weight reduction. In my particular case, which I mentioned is the inside portion of a headlight housing, there are a couple of reasons why I wouldn't use vinyl. First being potential heat and UV issues, within a sealed unit. that would not be a fun process to re-do in the future. Second being, the curves involved would require multiple pieces of vinyl being cut, stretched, overlapped and fiber patterns will not align properly. Third, my preference would be to replace the current material with CF, when possible, but with the original component having required a complex, multi-sectional mold, that would be an extensive project for a one-off product. And lastly, it's on a Ferrari, so imo, vinyl is not the best way to go. And something like this could be a similar approach. tinyurl.com/458-CF-headlight-insert , so the best of both worlds. But again, in most cases I would agree that the best target would be a 100% CF replacement part, but it's not always feasible and each person must choose what is best for them, regarding ease, costs, appearance and project length. Peace to all!
This DIY video looks good but inside the car temperatures get 220 degrees or more on the hot summers days and the bond may fail ? So I would try a test piece 1st or get technical data.
Question, is the vacuum bag necessary? I see some people leave the parts in the open and some in a vacuum bag. Are results different? Thanks in advance!
how much thickness gets added to the part this way? I'd really like to skin my interior trims on my e63, but I am kinda scared if it will add too much height to the part and imbalances the optic of the parts. is it more than 1mm?
Hi, any advice on not being confident with my own pieces ?, I always try to make them perfect, but always have minor details and that frustrates me a lot
dude this is normal, i love to do my stuff perfect but i know where i do the mistake. then i look at other how they do it and its more shit then mines. donth bother you cannot do everything 100% good
Hello friend The most important tip when skinning carbon fiber is not to apply a lot of epoxy resin at once, but to apply thinly several times. You don't have to worry about air bubbles when you apply epoxy resin thinly and sparingly. Also, it is easy to level for smooth surfaces.
I ran into a deep problem so I do all coats. It gets to the sanding part and it looks like I have pin holes , with sanding doesn’t seem to go away .. what should I do ?? I used heat gun to get rid of bubbles .
You should use a good 2k glue for the bond to the plastic. Epoxy doesnt stick to Plastic all that well and the Deltas in CTE will have your parts settling and coming loose in the summer. Regards
@@morthskarampouzouklis8561 thanks. I've tried 3m super 77 and 90. Both do not last long in Florida summers and the carbon layer delaminates from 3D printed ABS.
Legitimate question: Why not just use a vinyl wrap with carbon fiber patter instead? It was a great job and finish, but since the original piece I still under, there’s not really any weight saving. This just seems like a more expensive way rather than just throwing a vinyl on it.
What would happen if i scuff the base, apply the epoxy. Lay the fabric etc. Then once its cured just clear coat the piece with paint laquer instead of epoxy clear. I ask as i dont want to build up the size of the piece of trim.
The problem could happen that at high temperatures the carbon could separates from the surface because the original plastic trim expands significantly more. For this reason, I always use veneered trim as a base, as it is much more stable and expand less under heat. My first adhesive layer is epoxy with black pigment, wait till it sticks, put the fabric on top and directly soak the fabric with clear epoxy.
Isnt that what the maker is doing? Why are you repeating his process in words? Lol and what is “veneered trim as a base” mean???The part/s you made lifted because you didnt prep/keyed your surface enough.
What’s the point of vacuum bagging? I normally put epoxy fix the carbon fibre fabric followed by another coat of epoxy then leave to dry overnight and then sand and apply another three coats epoxy sand and final coat epoxy. I always find though the surface isn’t perfectly smooth you can see ripple like effect when holding the pieces at certain angles, will vacuum bagging help get a perfect smooth finish?
Hello friend. I use vacuum bagging to perfectly attach the carbon fiber to the parts. And for the perfect surface of parts, it is important to apply epoxy resin thinly several times and then level it with sandpaper. When skinning, I attach carbon fiber to the parts and apply three thin coats of epoxy resin. When the resin is fully cured, level the surface slightly with P180 sandpaper, then apply three more coats of epoxy resin. And after leveling with P400~P100 sandpaper, use clear spray to make the surface perfectly smooth.

Where did you get that vacum bag for just a vacumcleaner rather than the full vacumpump setup.?

Yeah very huge CTE carbon laminate 0.15m*10^-5/K vs glass impregnated abs 30m*10^-6 /K so next to nothing thermal expansion on both materials.
That’s exactly what he did and his won’t separate because of the mechanical adhesion . Mechanical adhesion along with plastic primer will not separate
