Way to turn a sponsor spot into a useful video. a lot of TH-camrs could learn from your approach. you've convinced me to keep watching the video rather just click off and down vote like I do with most sponsor spots.

This really helped me gain back some confidence and enjoyment in my artwork. Nothing looked right to me and the 30/70 rule really helped me flesh out the piece. Thank you :)

Always cool to see how someone else does things, I might try that 'threshold' method! I've always just used the 'levels' adjustment to get the deep black lines and white backdrop. But instead of just setting the lineart layer to multiply, I always ctrl+select the blue channel, invert the selection and then fill onto a new layer with the black lines. That way I have them completely isolated from any backdrop, because I feel that gives me a lot of freedom, especially if I want to do colour holds with the lineart.

Scanning. Threshhold is the fastest way to do it. I usually take the long road. Adjust the brightness/contrast or magic wand all the black, layer via copy.

High quality results! And may I say, gestures should be taught as the 1st art lesson everywhere! They always seem to start with structures, and that's boring, tedious, and not what it's about! If more people taught gestures 1st, I bet a lot of people would unlock their vision, start getting more direct, positive feedback from art sooner, and stick with it! I like your method, and another variation might be to sketchh in a sketchbook, scan (or snap a photo), and do linework with vector program--no tablet needed. Anyway this video is one of the best!

If you want to smooth the raw edges that the threshold filter left, you always can Gaussian blur the outline. 0'5 gives me good results but it depends on the dimensions of your archive so try different amounts or combined Gaussian blur passes with low cut/high pass filter passes until you find the perfect combination

Jake, I think that, if you're going to make a contour line on the inside of the object you're coloring to then fill the hole with the paint bucket, then you may want to use the pencil to do that instead of the regular brush, because when you use the brush you end up with anti aliasing that become artifacts after you filled in the hole.
And after all, you're using aliased artwork anyway when you used threshold in the linework, so the lack of AA shouldn't matter.
You could change the tolerance parameter of the paint bucket if you really want to use brush + bucket, but I'm not sure if there's a "magic number" that would work every time.

Hi Jake, you make some great videos. This one especially with showing how you edit the pencils out of the scan. I see that you’re working with Photoshop on a Cintiq. I have a really tight budget, and I’m going to buy an iPad Pro 12.9, as opposed to a regular computer. And I’m concerned with the limitations of the version of Photoshop that’s made for the IPad. I’m actually going to be working in Procreate, but first I want to edit my scans in Photoshop of course. Do you know if the iPad version Photoshop has full capability in this particular area?
