  • It is a sometimes common phenomenon that big blockbusters made for certain fan groups will see huge rating divides between critics and audiences. An age-old question has always been why does this happen? Why is it that critics will love a movie but the audience hates it? Or the other way around? In this video, I attempt to answer this using various data from certain movies across multiple review sites.

When it comes to something like the Last Jedi, I feel as if the issue is that people tend to forget that it's meant to be a chapter in a multi-part series and has to be consistent with what came before.
And I'm not talking about stuff like hyperspace or resistance bombers, or trivial stuff like that. I'm talking about the core story and characters.
If you ignore the context of everything that came before in the Star Wars saga (which is what it feels like many of the critics do), then of course the Last Jedi will come across as a great movie.
But if you take into account what was set up before in Ep 7, and how everything works character wise in the original 6 films, then episode 8 comes across as a not so great film.
I'm personally of the opinion that it's just a 6/10 film. Not the worst film ever made as the manchildren whine about , but it's not some sort of enlightened new direction for the franchise that some claim it to be.

I totally agree, most critics aren't "star wars" fans as much as they are "movie fans." Imo Last Jedi has some great effects, cinematography, music, and acting that carry that weight for the critics. Thats why I think Rise of Skywalker is just a colossal flop on all fronts, it failed to appease both the critics and the fans during the climax of a 40+ year story.

Rotten Tomatoes deserve a 1-star rating and also IMDB gets a 1-star rating. Let's start rating these garbage movie review sites.

This is an interesting video and helps explain an important part of the RT Fresh Score. However, I would like to know if your thoughts have changed since other Star Wars material has came out. How would you explain the difference in critic scores vs audience score for something like The Acolyte? The Last Jedi had its pros and cons, and I could see how it would get a majority of positive reviews from the critics, but The Acolyte has no redeeming qualities and still has an 81% from critics vs a 15% from the audience.
I would expect the critics to weigh universal film qualities more heavily - things like character development and a coherent storyline, and for the audience to fixate on minutia that are specific to the franchise - as your video points out. However, in this case, the audience are the ones pointing out the glaring faults in the storyline, consistent character actions, pacing of the film, etc. Shouldn't it be the critics who are more critical of those things?
