- The lovable idiot is a tried and true character type on sitcoms, and these goofballs are the absolute best! For this list, we’ll be looking at characters from sitcoms who definitely should have paid more attention in school, but who nevertheless won us over with their charm. Also, we’re only including live-action characters on this list, so no animated ones. Our countdown includes Troy Barnes from "Community" (2009-15), Phil Dunphy from "Modern Family" (2009-20), Rose Nylund from "The Golden Girls" (1985-92), Joey Tribbiani from "Friends" (1994-2004), and more! Penny is not dumb, she just hangs out with a bunch of genius scientists that make her look dumb by comparison. Even though he's only a recurring character, I think a better choice from The Big Bang Theory would have been Penny's ex-boyfriend Zack.
she's not learned in the same way as the other main characters, but is smarter in other ways - it's more notable and less credible that Raj should be an idiot about the Rocky Mountains or Buzz Lightyear, or his parents about Kansas (Much of the world have things called atlases)

I still can't believe that all of the main cast of The Golden Girls are gone. And I'm not ashamed to admit that that fact hurts a lot. RIP Estelle Getty (July 25, 1923 - July 22, 2008), Bea Arthur (May 13, 1922 - April 25, 2009), Rue McClanahan (February 21, 1934 - June 3, 2010), and Betty White (January 17, 1922 - December 31, 2021). You will all be missed.
Anyone else always felt Joey's intelligence was inconsistent? He could be a complete moron one scene and then the next make witty responses. I don't mind just always stood out to me

I felt his wisdom came out when it came to friend situations. He was fiercely loyal and it made sense to me.

It honestly would have been better had the show simply ended there, and not continue on needlessly for Golden Palace.

I never found Phil Dunphy to be all that dumb. Sure he is naive (and childish) but over the course of the series he proves over and over that he has some smarts. That doesn’t make him a genius but I don’t think he compares to e.g. Joey in terms of idiocy.
Especially since several of his family members (Haley, Dylan and Luke) are significantly less intelligent than him.
Yeah, he's just a bit of a man-child, but the show frequently highlights that he's a very good realtor and easily the most tech savvy character.

I was waiting for either Jake from "2 and a half men", first seasons, and Zack from "Big bang theory". I personally feel Zack is more lovable than penny, and definitely more stupid.

I would put Rose from Golden Girls as number one. Having said that, how did you miss Waldo from Family Matters, Cole from Martin, Cockroach from Cosby Show (played by the same actor who played Cole) or Cody from Step by Step, Jethroe from Beverly Hillbillies or Gilligan?
Andy deserves the top spot, but they snubbed Michael real hard.

Phil Dunphy rather than Haley? He's inattentive & wrongly believes he's cool, but he has a university degree & gives lectures at college.
His humour comes from a lack of common sense. Haley at least does have strengths. Also, remember the way she won the no-tech bet in an early episode by carving soap so it looked like she was on her phone to trick Alex into losing? The girl clearly has some intelligence.

Seinfeld is on Netflix now so I've watched the show for the first time and my biggest gripe is Kramer. What's loveable about him? He's a moron but one of those morons who thinks he's a genius. He forces his dumb shit onto everyone around him and makes their lives worse. But whereas other shows would have an episode showing why, despite all the shit, his friends love him really, seinfeld doesn't do it. An idiot yes, but loveable? No fucking way
He’s not dumb, he just never has any idea about what’s going on. He never does anything particularly stupid, just can’t read the room.

Is he really loveable though? He, like the rest of the characters' aren't exactly likeable. They are all egoistic, selfish and do'n't care about others.
Loveable idiots are a sitcom staple: Waldo Faldo, Cody Lambert and Randy Hickey to name a few more.
The old classic idiots are WAY more lovable than any of the recent entries in this list. Gilligan, Ed Norton, Herman Munster, Peter Tork, Potsie, both Lenny and Squiggy, and ANY character played by Jerry Van Dyke.
I was shocked no Giligan, don't say in sitcom history and only go back 20 years

And your winner wouldn't even make it into my personal list, the character is way too exaggerated and therefore annoying.
My winner is beyond doubt Betty White as Rose Nylund. The only bad part about the Golden Girls, is that there's only 7 seasons - I wish there were far more.
Penny did have many idiotic moments! 🤣🤣🤣 She did marry Zack in Vegas and thought it was just a joke!
Fun fact: Betty White and Rue McClanahan exchanged roles for the pilot and it worked out and how Bull Shannon only got a honorable mention the only way you couldn't love Bull is because you never saw Night Court

That also got Bea Arthur on board, since she had no intention of doing "Maude and Vivian meet Sue Ann Nivens". Since White and McClanahan swapped roles, that got Arthur to reconsider, joining the main cast.

I have to say despite the numerous roles he has been in and will be in the coming future Chris Pratt as Andy in Parks and Recreation is my personal favorite role he has done
Only know him from GOTG movies but I liked them.
Bull Shannon from Night Court was truly one of the most lovable characters of all time. An innocent and childlike persona wrapped up in a body that Frankenstein's Monster would be scared of, Bull could draw sympathy and laughs in equal measure within the same scene, as well as serve up his uncommon form of wisdom that often belied his seemingly low IQ. In the final episode of the series, he is taken to another planet by aliens posing as older humans for a noble purpose - being tall enough to reach all the things on the upper shelf.
While it was good you mentioned Woody from Cheers, he was brought in to replace Coach (played until the untimely and unfortunate death of actor Nicolas Colasanto). Coach knew two subjects with clarity - baseball and bartending. A mentor to Sam Malone from his days as a professional baseball player, his teaching moments with Sam often wind up being anecdotes from his career in baseball - most of which have absolutely nothing to do with the subject they were initially discussing. While Woody was a good character, he was still merely a reflection of Coach.
What about Waldo from family matters? Good list nonetheless

Lowell Mather from Wings is my top pick. The writers of Cheers and Frasier (who also created Wings) had already nailed the loveable, dimwitted character type with Woody Boyd, but they continued to perfect that character with Lowell, who was half based on Woody, and half based on a one-time Season 8 Cheers appearance by Lowell's actor Thomas Haden Church. Seriously, never had so many laughs before as I did with Lowell's stupidity. Brian from Wings also fits the same description, though he is a different type of idiot.
Ah come on. Father Dougal McGuire should have been on this list. He was one of the funnest TV characters and he had some of the best quotes "Well, Ted, as I said last time, it won't happen again." "Ahh, lets see, I'll have the Hindu Curry, Steak and Chips, and a glass of Coke thanks." "Those women were in the nip!" 😅

Potsie Weber from Happy Days? That TV show is so classic and its characters are so good. Potsie was by far my favorite mostly cus he wasn’t bright in the head but he had such a lovable and sweet personality you could forgive him for it. Potsie to me is one of the best lovable idiots.

This list lacks diversity! It’s like watchmajo doesn’t believe black sitcoms exist! Don’t get me wrong I’ve watched almost every show on this list and Golden Girls and The Office is one of my all time favorites but it would be nice to see more diversity on these list!! Living single had Overton and Synclair, The Fresh Prince had Jazz, Martin had Cole, and the list can go on!

I haven't watched the video yet, but obviously Rose Nyland is a sinch, Enos and his love for Daisy Duke and being torn between doing his job of arresting the Dukes for Boss Hogs schemes has got to be on the list.
