There is mention on the band's Wiki that in 1986 Jay released a hip-hop single on the label Street Sounds. Not sure if this is it, but if anything it shows he was recording for quite some time before Jamiroquai rolled along.

Yes this is Jay’s first known recording,pre Jamiroquai the band wasn’t formed yet,this was done for the hip hop dance label street sounds,I think they were based In Ealing run by Morgan khan
