Sonetts are cool cars that a surprisingly large number of UK-based Saab people are totally unaware of - I only found out they existed after buying an A-Z book of classic cars about 15 years ago. Such as pity that they weren't sold officially here, but a number have been imported. I'm a big, big Saab fan and currently drive a 2000 9-5 Aero Hot estate, the performance of which is almost in the supercar category :)
Awesome Video love that car I did automotive work for a good many years but I totaled my back 8 bulged disks pinching the spinal cord still walking so far but that ended my work life. I am on disability now and love watching you and Mustie1 and others keeps me from being sad that I can't do that anymore. Keep the wonderful Videos coming.
I went to a Classic Race event here in Denmark earlier this year, and there was this exhibition part of the event where - I think it was the danish Saab club - was displaying several old Saabs! To my big surprise there was 4 pristine Saab Sonett III's, which was really cool :) Never really paid much attention to the older Saabs, but after watching your videos with your Sonett it was really cool to see one up close. Really cool little car :)
Nice video :) I like the freewheeling feature :) That car is as old as me :) I was born in March 1974. Your Saab has held up really well :) I have always liked them. Wish they were still made and sold here.
What an awesome car! Dude, nothing sounds better than that sweet Sonett for sure. Really enjoy watching your videos, still want that T-bird sitting in the deserted car dealership, such a great car that was! All this makes me think of my Dad when he gave me my first car, a little Renault Dauphine--1960/61 I loved that car! It was no racer but I liked the fact I could fix it myself. When it rusted away to nothing I still wouldn't sell it. :)
I owned that EXACT model-year Sonnet! Mine was, rather, um, unique, in that it had A/C from the Factory, but had 'shaved' seats from a model 99 of mid-late 70's vintage, which featured the 'fixed-height' backrests! It also had a VW-Dune-buggy in spired steering wheel, tick, but Small in size. Mine was Yellow, with a Black Hood/back-plate, and the 7MPH Super-Bumpers on it. I ran CN-36 175/70 Pirelli's on it for best grip (15", as I recall). As I was going to Work, along the twisty, narrow Rt-100 North, in 1994, I passed a Honda CRX, just north of the Pond. I was late for Work at the kitchen mid-way 'tween Ludlow and Killington. I checked-in, then had to go back, grab my Knives for Prep/Cooking. As I sauntered back to my car, the Honda had peeled into the Lot. The Driver scrambled out of his Jap coup, and asked "WHAT The Heck IS That?". I calmly replied, as I got my Chef kit, 'It's a Maserati!', and went inside.. A Week Later, on my way into work, that same care followed me into work, on a (in MY time-frame) more relaxed moment. And his first remark was, 'That Car Can't Pass MINE!'. "Yet, it has, Twice"... 'it isn't a Maserati!' "Nope, it's a Airplane Jet-Fighter company using a Ford Tractor V-4, in a Race-car! - Sorry, gotta go to work!". I left it at that.
thank you so much for this Sonett Special !!! i absolutley love it, and you are one of only a few people on TH-cam who had video footage of this ames-ing car. Love every Detail about it what you had shown. Keep this Car outta the Cabbage plz ^^
Gotta love the V4 Taunus engine, my neighbour had a bunch of Ford Taunus cars, one of em had a couple hundred thousand kilometres on it, burnt it down inside while welding the floor but it still ran, I think someone fixed it, might be still running somewhere in Germany
Amesie your heater blower has a little spring that holds the brushes against the armature that's what causes it not to work mine rusted away I used a ink pen spring to pull it back against the armature works great the ink pen spring is just a rig job but from what was left of the spring it looks exactly the same
This car has taken you serious for a few years now so it's high time you start to take it more seriously. It does not have to be taken up to concours standard but still a lot could be done on a shoestring budget. My tip for the inside of the roof: I often use black concrete paint for this sort of stuff. The brand I use is dark green when applied but quickly dries into an even satin black finish. If you do not brush it but apply it with stabing movements you can achieve a rahter convincing muffled effect that will blend in rather well with the relative roughnes of the GRP surface.
Hello Amesie!I saw your Video looking for some new interesting stuff on TH-cam. What can I say...you have a new fan :-)I didn`t know that Saab built sportscars like the Sonett. It's looking great and you did a great Job on it.Here in Germany you will actually get just one Sonett 3 already restored for about over 20,000 Euros.I would be interested in driving a Sonett 3 but thats too expensive. I just bought an older house and there is a lot to do around that cost a lot of Money. I took the TH-cam abo and be exited for the next Video! :-)
On those points put a little Dyslectic grease on the little cam lobe . That will help with wear . I owned a SAAB Sonett . I wish I owned one today . The Ford V4 was designed in Germany before WW2 . The Germans used them for pony motors on ships . The ford 2.6 , 2.8 , 2.9 , 3.0 260 ,289 , 302 engines was designed after the V4 . These was vary strong engines with a lot of low end power . I loved my Sonett III . Just to bad it rusted badly .
Nice sonett, amesie, and nice show in general.whats special about the switches? Should be ordinary Saab 99 items? Post pics of the best ones you have and maybe I can check local swapmeets and my "Saturday midnight/lifesaver" box. And if other viewers do the same, the show up eventually. I used to own a Saab 900 2.0-16i and I loved that car! Second best car I ever owned! Next after my '69 Volvo 122.
Considering your Sonett in black and orange and the vinyl is a typical pebble finish I might put some roll on bed liner on the roof; It would kinda look like cloth I think.
Ha Amsie have u tryd replacement electronic points....got some for my 1973 Renault 17..... I got it off eBay... its a Hall effect magnetic one.. it fits on where the points go cost me £26 ...!!!
With regards to the roof why dont you stick some of that black sound matting that you use to cover speakers with. I have seen in another video and it looks really good.
If and whenever you plan on selling this car let me know. I have always wanted to fully restore one of these cars. My first car was a Saab. Great car company that unfortunately went dead.
that ruberized box gaurd spray paint would work good for making ur cars ceiling look better fyi i use it on my qsc ksubs every so often to clean them up should last million yrs for u
Nice little 4 year review,. She's looking good underneath too. You know you could take the body off easily and fully sandblast the chassis. Patch it and totally rustproof it. Be good for decades at least. It wouldn't be a big job, check out YT User retrorestore.
I really like that you are saving such a great car. I just started watching your videos and now I really want to get a Saab Sonett. I am wondering, is there a cover you have for your steering column? It look odd with nothing covering up the wires that I saw.
That freewheel transmission is a really good idea, I don't know why more manufacturers don't use them since they are crazy about emissions and fuel consumption. I bet it really helps save Gas. Amesie, Be honest. Whats the fastest you've been in the sonett in mexico? (For legal reasons) Also, Just recently discovered this channel and I can't stop watching. Keep the great content coming!
It is a good idea but you loose the ability to slow down using the gear box which is useful if your get brake fade. Most modern cars switch of the fuel as soon as your feet are off the pedals, this saves fuel but maintains the engine braking. As soon as you touch any pedal to fuel flows again.
Yes I know, But if I remember correctly he mentioned in another video there was a lever on the floor and if you pushed it in it turned the free wheel off and it acted like a normal trans
It's a gorgeous car. It could improve but it looks and sounds great. Reminds me a bit of an old TVR Tuscan. Love interesting cars. Fuck boring reliable cars. Luv and Peace.
another possibility maybe to go to something like a Lowels and get some valspar paint samples for 5 bucks and paint that on, as its latex paint and the samples are pretty sizeable, as you might be able to do the roof with one go. it'll take awhile with a small brush though.
hey just hopping to get so insight on a car I picked up after watching some of ur vids I found a 74 sonett that had been sitting for a while and I'm starting to work on it now is there anything I should now to look for in the sonett
I'm replacing the trunk panel and the floor panel I looked at the front by the cv axles and the driver side had a little bit but not life threatening is there anywhere good to get parts or or should I sharpen up my fabricating skills
I just came across an 1970 sonett 3, the engine and trans are out of it, but i have them do you know what the value is and where i can get engine and trans parts?
Thanks for the offer, I have them they where covered in tape glue I took them off to replace the blinker switch but didn't have time to put them back on.
Ok, i think the saab 96 and 99 1971-74 have pretty much the same switches but maybe not the correct engraved markings on it. The number of connection pins i think is the important. Did you know that the headlight doors opens at 150 km/h (93 mph) on the Sonett III:s because of the air pressure/flow and it is called "lightning speed" :)
It has a botched paint job on it that would take way too much work to remove for paint. It's soo thick and oxidized. I like it like it is so I don't have to worry about it getting nicked or scratched.
So after about four years of ownership it is about time you start to pronounce the name correct Amesie. The emphasis is in the second part, like you say So-Neat, and then the e pronounced as you do it now. For the rest, keep up the good work. Alex B (1973 Sonett in orange)

I'm not sure about the transmissions, but I know the 2-stroke Saabs had a lubrication "problem" - the bearings only get oil when you're on the throttle, since it is added with the fuel. Not a huge deal in a 2-stroke bike where wind resistance and light weight mean you're almost always on the power a little, even on a good downhill run. But in a car, if you stay off the throttle going down a hill for too long, you can kill the main bearings - so there is a need to stab the throttle regularly to make sure you have some oil moving in there. :-)

Those little Ford V4s sound good!
Can't keep the smile off your face when you are driving that thing .... 8-)

it is a pretty cool little car! I like older rare and unique stuff. And those plates are a great idea!
thank you so much for this Sonett Special !!! i absolutley love it, and you are one of only a few people on TH-cam who had video footage of this ames-ing car. Love every Detail about it what you had shown. Keep this Car outta the Cabbage plz ^^
I think it would make an awsome series of videos showing you digging it up.. dragging it to the shop.. and rebuilding or restoring it.
Really takes me back to my '71 Saab 95 wagon, same song dif car, sweet
love that freewheel setup.
@amesie, did you know you can shift clutchless when freewheeling?
love it. my Dad just passed his 74 on to me. I am restoring next year.
I used to work on the 900s. Hard to kill them. They are tough.
Love the setup! Can't wait to by a Sonett of my own.
I just found a sonnet III in a salvage yard yesterday. Never actually seen one before this
Sounds glorious! Enjoy every video. My memory may be fading but I'm sure Ford had a small V4 in their early Capri. Related perhaps ?
The Sonett looks fun to drive. My buddy has a 91 Miata which he let me drive. That iwas fun.
Gotta love the V4 Taunus engine, my neighbour had a bunch of Ford Taunus cars, one of em had a couple hundred thousand kilometres on it, burnt it down inside while welding the floor but it still ran, I think someone fixed it, might be still running somewhere in Germany
some acoustic carpet can be used for a headliner, you can attach it with stick on Velcro if you intend to remove it later
I love this guy :0 I recently bought a sonett because of this guys videos !!!!
Post some videos! We need more good Saab videos :D
+Simon Dalzell Don't sound like a bad idea.......... o.0
I subscribed to you, so you'll have at least one viewer
Amesie your heater blower has a little spring that holds the brushes against the armature that's what causes it not to work mine rusted away I used a ink pen spring to pull it back against the armature works great the ink pen spring is just a rig job but from what was left of the spring it looks exactly the same

The 96 needs love first, the Sonett will get it's day when I finally get my own workshop.
Just janking your chain of course but it would be great if it get's another major upgrade. Maybe by then my tip will be of some help.
Hello Amesie!I saw your Video looking for some new interesting stuff on TH-cam. What can I say...you have a new fan :-)I didn`t know that Saab built sportscars like the Sonett. I was waiting for a video like this, saab looks great compared to the rot you got it with.
Loved my '74. I just wished it had a bit more horsepower. Great sounding engine, great handling, a real head turner too.

I'm a bit deep in Saab Sonetts. I do plan to sell off 1 or 2 of these this summer. I have a lot of parts too.
How can I contact you regarding parts for Sonetts?
Nice sonett, amesie, and nice show in general.whats special about the switches? Should be ordinary Saab 99 items? Considering your Sonett in black and orange and the vinyl is a typical pebble finish I might put some roll on bed liner on the roof; It would kinda look like cloth I think.
An idea for the headliner might be liquid bedliner, would provide some "texture",and mybe look a little like the hard plastic headliner in my AMX.
Nice you are in to a swedish car.....i am a swede ;) To bad only that saab factory closed :(
Fun overview.
Awesome guy, awesome car, awesome channel. Where's the 9000?!
Ha Amsie have u tryd replacement electronic points....got some for my 1973 Renault 17..... I got it off eBay... its a Hall effect magnetic one.. it fits on where the points go cost me £26 ...!!!

One day, I WILL own one of these.
I know my car and bikes but you got me with this one lol
I want 1987 Saab with Gold BBS RIM$ from The Movie Paid in Full. But I love YOUR SONETT. I got a Song calledSaab Story by Present. You'll hear it soon
oh yea, i totally need an amesie stickah!
Amesie, have you ever considered going with Pertronix ignition? I have had it in my VW Bug for about 10 years and it works well.
What about a piece of luan or steel with headliner material glued to it?
wow, awesome saab man, subscribed!
If and whenever you plan on selling this car let me know. I have always wanted to fully restore one of these cars. My first car was a Saab. Great car company that unfortunately went dead.
that ruberized box gaurd spray paint would work good for making ur cars ceiling look better fyi
i use it on my qsc ksubs every so often to clean them up should last million yrs for u
u can aquire kits that have different colours
I still think you ought to build nerf bars for the front bumper holes, rather than plug them. It'll look good either way though.
Nice little 4 year review,. She's looking good underneath too. You know you could take the body off easily and fully sandblast the chassis. Patch it and totally rustproof it. Be good for decades at least. It wouldn't be a big job, check out YT User retrorestore.

I have the covers I had just installed a new blinker stalk but the covers need to be cleaned up.
Oh, I see. Great car man. I am glad to see someone saving old Saabs. I really liked the Saab 96 videos that you did. Such neat cars.
The V4 sounds remind me of the sounds of a boxer four...
saab just knew how to make good cars
Just found one of these in dark blue running for 4500. really, really tempting after being stupid enough to sell my last one :/
What ever happened to the Sonnett in the woods eh? UPDATE VIDEO REQUESTED
I just did an update video last month.
+Amesie's Automotive Corner Cool, I'll go have a look! Thanks man
+Amesie's Automotive Corner You need to save that car.
I thought you bought a lot of the switches for the Sonett from that Saab parts guy a few weeks ago?
He didn't have tose ones, I grabbed a blinker switch from him, the others where for the 96.
Keep the great content coming!

oh that sounds fantastic, I agree in that case!
Correct, but it only can be done when the car is not moving.
Not really much of a setback - Just stop and switch it over....
It's a gorgeous car. It could improve but it looks and sounds great. Reminds me a bit of an old TVR Tuscan.
Love interesting cars. Fuck boring reliable cars.
Luv and Peace.
maybe coat the headliner with roll on bedliner?
i thought the same thing
Was thinking that..
I was gonna suggest this too
another possibility maybe to go to something like a Lowels and get some valspar paint samples for 5 bucks and paint that on, as its latex paint and the samples are pretty sizeable, as you might be able to do the roof with one go. it'll take awhile with a small brush though.
awesome hun
Thanks babe!
Love to put a 2014 VMAX in one.
hey just hopping to get so insight on a car I picked up after watching some of ur vids I found a 74 sonett that had been sitting for a while and I'm starting to work on it now is there anything I should now to look for in the sonett
Rust.. Look for rust.
I'm replacing the trunk panel and the floor panel I looked at the front by the cv axles and the driver side had a little bit but not life threatening is there anywhere good to get parts or or should I sharpen up my fabricating skills
how hard are these car's engine to work on? also how much do they normally cost when in really bad shape?
12:50 , What's that lever thing moving to the far left of the screen?
I just came across an 1970 sonett 3, the engine and trans are out of it, but i have them do you know what the value is and where i can get engine and trans parts?
If you need a column clamshell I have one
Thanks for the offer, I have them they where covered in tape glue I took them off to replace the blinker switch but didn't have time to put them back on.
+Amesie's Automotive Corner
N.Y. k just
did you take it to work yesterday?
Hey Amesie, Which switches are you missing in the dash/console on your Sonett?
The headlight and running light switches.
Amesie why don't you give it a fresh coat of paint? it would look so much better. I just hate to see such a nice little car in such rough shape.
I agree. Even a quick 'blow over' would give it a lift.
It has a botched paint job on it that would take way too much work to remove for paint. It's soo thick and oxidized. I like it like it is so I don't have to worry about it getting nicked or scratched.
In what shape are the seats?
No Seat belt on?
The're too old and degraded to be of any use.
So after about four years of ownership it is about time you start to pronounce the name correct Amesie. The emphasis is in the second part, like you say So-Neat, and then the e pronounced as you do it now.
For the rest, keep up the good work.
Alex B (1973 Sonett in orange)
hello does anyone know where i can get a replacement distributor for the 1974 sonett i cannot find anywhere
It's a bosch unit I believe the same as a vw beetle..
I still wanna know what the deal is with that lost Sonett..
Me too.
I'm not on Facebook but would like to purchase a sticker. Can I pay via Paypal?
Roll some bedliner up there.
north ft. myers fl. on Bayshore road a used car dealer with a lot of very used cars has a Sonnet forsale and ready for a rebuild
Reply
Denia Pacalda too far away. thanks though!
Love your videos, but please polish the Sonett.
The paint on it is too porous to polish, it is what it is..
You said " if a European car isn't leaking oil, you're out of oil"
But the sonnet was American built, it was just Saab that payed for it and put their name to it.
Sonetts were built in Sweden and imported to the US.
+Woodrow White ok, sorry, that's what I was told.
No prob. First line of the Wiki page, "The Saab Sonett is an automobile manufactured between 1955 and 1957 and again between 1966 and 1974 by Saab of Sweden."
You mean "BRUH!!" ??
Does the brother understand marketing or what?? :)
Lol, putting the name everywhere! I don't want to be just another tech hiding in a shop
The Transmission must be the same as the two stroke. There is a vid with a guy explaining how to drive the two stroke - not a Sonnet, but a Saab - and he is always doing that power on - power off thing, with one eye on the temp gauge too.

Could you make a new lower body in stainless steel it would last u for ever then!
The exhaust shall go out thru the outtake in the body in each corner.
Like this... assets.blog.hemmings.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/5.jpg
I know but I want it tucked up higher..
Only 6 where made
Just pray no one hits you......body panels look like they are very hard to find for a 74
I would put a Subaru engine in this?
nah 3800 GM engine
+Kevin Stripe What in the fuck why. At least the supercharged version right?
Nippledozer yeah ,its a realiable engine and it practically fits in anything...plus Subaru sucks
+Kevin Stripe Not really exceptionally reliable or anything? And alot heavier than a 4 pot from subaru
Nippledozer actually the 3800 is in wards 10 best engines due to its power and reliability
Under 13,000 miles?
WTF?
You still dont know anything new about it?
