  • Jordan Lonborg with Tablas Creek Vineyard shares how he uses the Field Boss® EcoLite UTV skid sprayer to care for the crop organically on their winery.
Established in the early 1990’s, Tablas Creek Vineyard was one of the first wineries on the west side of Paso Robles, CA. Founded on values that date back generations Tablas Creek became ‘certified organic’ in 2006. This was a major milestone in the vineyards history, thanks to the help of Jordan Lonborg (the Viticulturist at Tablas Creek). After falling in love with agriculture at a young age, Jordan now spends his life directing spray programs to keep the grapes as healthy as possible.

With organic/biodynamic growing practices, what products are you spraying? I would assume a fungicide if it’s being applied to the tops, but are there insecticides and herbicides as well that are organic/biodynamic friendly? Is there a good product range? I’m interested in returning 8-12 acres of vineyard to organic standards- possibly biodynamic- in a challenging location/environment. They had been organic, but different management decided to go conventional about a decade ago...

Hello Erik! Jordan Lonborg from Tablas Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles, CA. here... As far as our Biodynamic program is concerned, we use the Enduraplas sprayers to apply the Barrel Compost 500 and the Horn Silica 501 applications. The 500 is applied during the winter months to stimulate micro-organisms within the soil profile and the 501 is applied during the growing season to enhance the photosynthetic capabilities of the vines. In the video, I am using the sprayers to apply compost tea, which mainly acts as a foliar fertilizer. That said, there is a lot of research coming out that is starting to show that compost teas have fungicidal properties as well. There are some really great OMRI approved products on the market now also. A few companies that come to mind are Westbrige and Marrone Bio Innovations. Do your land a vineyard a favor and convert! The transition can and will be tough in many ways. If you are okay with letting go of aesthetics, letting go of what society has told us what a vineyard should look like, you will be rewarded tenfold. We farm in an enviroment that is a harsh as it gets. Below 30 in the winters and consistently above 110 in the summer. Over a third of the vineyard is dry-farmed. This would not be possible without our amazing soil health. Our soil health would not be what it is without Biodynamics and organics. Check out our blogs on our website for more info. Good luck!
