One of the reasons i love your vids, is that you show things how they really are! It feels like, for a lot of youtubers, everything just sort of works or goes well for them. However whenever i try and do a job on my car it's full of rusted bolts, stuck fittings, snapped pieces etc.... etc... and yours are some of the only vids when it feels like you're actually working on a real car and not some show room fresh car that's been made to look a little old.
Hi Steve, great to see you back at it again. Listen, I'm sure I'm not going to be able to tell you that much, but I'm on my 3rd old BMW restoration and have definitely learnt the hard way. That car is way off being ready for paint yet. The bits of rust you refer to as surface where the panels overlap at the bottom of the B pillar and sills aren't, the rust is coming from underneath the overlap. Unless you un-stitch everything, which is obviously major work, rust will be back again quite quickly. The valance is repairable but not easy because of the curves involved, I assume a replacement would be aftermarket to be affordable. If so, there will undoubtedly be fitment issues to get over. Watching Yorkshire Car Restoration YT channel would be a good bet for you, you will see exactly what you are up against for the sill, floor and jacking point repairs. Other than that, we are all busting to see your journey on this project, who doesn't like an E30?!
Hey Bob, thanks for the feedback. Don't worry, I have no intentions of painting the car now, or any time soon. There is a huge list of things to do before I get to that, I just wanted to take a break from the mass of welding that is required, and after speaking with the painter, it was another job to do. My plan is to "finish" the topside of the car and everything inside before I start work on the bottom of the car, which includes the sills. There is a possibility that the front valance will come from a company similar to E30 Garage Norway, and therefore fitment shouldn't be so much of an issue. Thanks again for a great comment!
in my opinion, everything I saw is subject to restoration, you have everything necessary for this: skills, technical capabilities. Of course, it's only a matter of time or desire.

Steven you’re making great progress so don’t worry about the many issues, they’re inevitable with projects of this scope!! Just remember what your work was like before that powerful air compressor and higher quality equipment!!! 😂 I’d definitely just replace that front bumper assembly. The time it would’ve taken to repair it could be better used elsewhere on the car, IMO
Thanks, Michael! And don't remind me! Its tough enough with the new equipment, I don't know how I use to cope! I'm leaning on the side of replacing it, I think you're right.
The black rubbery strip along yhe sills used to be double sided tape that is originally used to hold the skirts (besides the clips) close to the body. The caulk at the left rear vent behind the bumper was added by someone at some stage to stop water from leaking in. I suggest you place the vents back with proper nautical caulk as these vents often leak and cause rust in the side pockets.
You're being too hard on yourself! Yes you're redoing work that you did in Spain, but you were learning then and are still learning now! You've come a long way! I'm waaaaay worse than you at this stuff but I'm also still learning! Great video ❤
I think the rubber strips are on your sills to protect them against the hard, possibly scratching action of your side skirts, which could otherwise damage the paint and cause rust underneath them and on the sills
The thin parished rubber strips on the sills are to superimpose the plastic sill covers, so they wouldn't rub on / through the paint on driving vibrations. So def. recommended to replace them again... 👍🏻

Steve, I’m been following along and I really enjoy the videos. One question I have is about prepping for paint when you still have a fair amount of rust, trim, and windows to be dealt with. I don’t do this kind of work so it’s all new to me but I’m curious why you wouldn’t completely strip the car down and address the rust first before doing paint prep?
Hey Jeff, thanks for the comment, I've done it, just to tick if off the list. I wanted to take a break from the welding and this was just one of the jobs I could have done. Cheers!
One issue that is always a pain is keeping track of all the fastenings, nuts & bolts or small parts that you have to strip. I seem to remember that you were very methodical about this in Spain. How are you dealing with it here?
17:44 Use Super Lock (SL) socket head - it's better and safer for hexagonal bolts. And please DO NOT use a ratchet wrench to remove rusty fasteners, they are not designed for such loads and can easily break. Instead use Drive Breaker\ Power Bar and then ratchet wrench.
