I think some of my favorite videos is when you cover men’s fashion and your “personal opinions.” I am fortunate to have a great seamstress 5 minutes from my home & I have taken quite a few pants to have them taken up and narrowed. John, I still think you are the person men (at least I) would hire for a consultation & shopping expedition.
Jon, perfect timing per usual, I'm visiting Downtown Boston currently and I have noticed several men, sharply dressed with varying trouser lengths, my son and I actually had a conversation about it...thanks as always, I like the wide cuff personally
I know a few years back, pants (chino and jeans) everyone was letting them bunch up and that was the look. But now with pants slimming down, I think it doesn’t look good breaking/bunching up too much as before. Yeah. I have some new pants and need to hem them bc I normally buy 32” lengths but on the slimmer chinos, they look not right. I think part of this is bc many are wearing slimmer chinos with no break or higher to show their ankles and shoes. Thanks for the video.
Love this video. I truly believe...cuffing is ones own style and how you feel when you look in the mirror. I am 47 years young and started cuffing my jeans this year (showing ankle...with a very low sock or a no-show sock) and it looks really good I think. I have gotten so many compliments this year on my "new" look (not just my pant cuffing), it's been so nice. I would like to thank you for some of this John, I watch your videos and after losing 80 pounds, my entire "look" (wardrobe) has obviously changed!!!👍
I think it should be noted that if the length is just above the shoe or with minimal break than when sitting it will expose the leg and socks more than you might like. So I think just a tad bit of a break is just enough.
Great content and new sub. After 2 yrs of WFH and loosing 30 lbs it's time for new wardrobe. Your channel and o.g. are helpful. Always liked slight to no break in trousers. Replacing my now baggy jeans with same. Best regards.
Great info ! Formal attire should be worn with no cuff, and at least touching the top of the shoe or with a slight break in the front. While the over all "high water" look exposing the ankle , or contrasting length dropping below the heel in the back of the shoe are no go's. Thanks for sharing . . .
Cuffs to me are a bit too much of a 'just stepped off the yacht' nautical look, and best worn with a pair of deck shoes. You just can't beat good tailoring for a quality looking hem. Love the video's John, keep 'em coming.
Glad you made this video! Its true as we get older the perception may be that we are sloppy by not paying attention to this small detail. Thanks for all the great content you make in your channel and share with us all John!
Excellent info. I'm gonna try the SANDWICH IN THE CUFF idea. 😂 Excellent info. I have had trouble finding my proper length of pants. I'm short; 5ft 8. Short legs; 29 or 30 length. I like your rules. Thank you.
I am 5'5 tall and I have all my pants tailored for a no-break look that touches the shoe and taper with a 28 inseam and 7.5 leg opening. This helps us as a short men to accentuate good clean look and height.
This video is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thanks very much! Also, I appreciate the formality of referencing me as "Mr. McGuire," but everybody calls me Buz.
It's good you made this video, but it would be good to know what would be general guide to how much taper form the knee down. Or how much would a typical hem width be (measuring one side flat ). Also with regards the length touching the shoe, ( I know this might be silly question ) would this be still valid if wearing socks ?
Hi John, really like this video as always you're doing a great job. By the way like your haircut, and also I would like to see a video on polo shirt, not the brand. Stay safe
I love the no break look, but I hate the rear of my hem jumping inside the edge of the shoe. Alternatives are to wear casual boots, inclined hem or.........? any better ideas?
Hey John! Just landed a new role at an organization with a more "dressy" culture, so I'm buying dressier pants for the first time in 6 years! I Google'd pant's length and found your channel! Great content -- subscribed and liked! Now I'm off to find your videos about shoes.
Agree on most of what you've said except for the 'excessive tapering' issue that seems to still be prevalent today. I really don't think it works well for classic style dress trousers especially if u have an athletic build (muscular thighs and calves) and start looking like u have legs like a string of sausages a la Daniel Craig! It also accentuates big feet which look like large rowboats, clownish! Middle of the road would be my recommendation .
Whether is it short, medium and long break all three choices are of individual preference. I prefer the old school style of dressing. I like to wear high waist pants, semi baggy cut with long droop break and one and a half inch cuff of course. Dressing is a very subjective preference. To each their best.
Nice video John. I prefer a full break on all my pants and jeans because I have long legs with a long stride and I don’t like showing too much ankle when I walk (bare ankles and skinny fit jeans are OK on younger guys!)
Love your channel...I always wondered what the appropriate length should be for men our / my age. Now, what about these wild colored socks I see a lot of guys wearing???
Awesome content John! Thank you. Have you ever covered in detail what kinds of hats older guys should wear? I found one of your videos with a brief mention of hats.
Informative video. But for me, though I prefer the "straight leg" version of jeans and chinos, my rather thick calves make me a bit self-conscious about that style. When I get up from a seated position, my straight-leg trousers are caught on my thick calves and while standing, I wonder if the trousers look too narrow. Recommendations?
Hi John, sorry... Watching you after a long time due corona measures. Glad to see you are still up and running. Btw, Just hit age of 50, but still feel like i am end 30..... 😂. Keep up the vids ! Great job again !
I'm in Texas, pin-rolling my pants to show the ankles as saved me from more than i know, I respect your opinion sir very much but because of the weather and being in a casual setting most of the time I have to lol I use to be stationed in California as well so yes hot weather my legs thank me lol
Unfortunately I am between inseam length so I usually have to have my pants hemmed. My tailor retired and I haven’t found a new one yet. Lots of seamstresses around, but not many real tailors.
Great videos John thanks! i'll be 'hitting' 60 this April 2022. i've lost a little bit of weight..( waist 38..to about 36 inches ..short inseam 29 inches ). i think i'm 'shrinking' too!..LOL! My question is: Can a Good Tailor...taper..& hem my pants ( jeans...to chinos..dress pants )...not only with the 'Length' ...but tapering a bit in the Hip / waist..& Bum area...so it's Not 'flapping around'?? This Goes for my 'Jackets as well...Would it make 'sense' to have them 'Adjusted'.. ...or do i have to SPEND Big Bucks On a New Wardrobe?...Would Appreciate Your Guidance/Suggestion! Cheers From Canada...( Robert ).
Rebuilding my wardrobe from near zero after losing 3 suit sizes. Thanks for the length info. I'm searching for the perfect balance in a navy blazer, not too expensive, not too gaudy with logo buttons, wear it for years quality. Any suggestions? On sale is always a good idea but I need a 41 long NOW.
That’s a tough call, sorry you’ve had that experience. My only advice would be to find an actual tailor, not a partial tailor in a dry cleaning business. Find someone that does military uniforms, and wedding dresses. They tend to have a higher skill set.
John, You always emphasize that pants should be tapered starting from the knee. I have a denim given to me by my brother that is slightly flared. What can I do to make myself more "fashionable" by not altering the pants. More power to you and your channel. By the way, I'm from the Philippines.
Hi Jon, may I give you all a buying recommendation, even if slightly out of topic? buy clothes in your home country!!! people from different areas of the world have different body proportions, legs length/girth/waist rate, shirts torso/shoulder/sleeves/collar rate. I come from a Mediterranean country and I live in the UK. I hardly find clothes that fit my body shape in the UK (I'm 179cm, 65kg, in metric system).

At some point they just fall down and get stepped on, which is very annoying especially when raining or in the winter. Personally, I feel properly hemmed jeans or any other type pants is the safest way to go. Pinrolling may be in right now but what about a year or two from now? I just can't be bothered to follow fashion that closely.
my big thing is, I don't like it when the hem of my pant gets caught in the back of my shoe... which is why I go a little longer. A little break in front... and coverage in the back...
Massive cuffs on any trouser (see 4:45) is the exact reason why so many take the piss out of US fashion. That look was in during the 1990’s, never since.
