The year after this show they split into a varisty and jv band because they had gotten so big.

Didn’t seem to really help competitive success much

@@pumpkin462 It had less to do with being "more" competitive and more about just staying competitive. It was getting very difficult to effectively clean the show with 350 people on the field, and in the next year (2015) the band was expecting to grow even more. Round Rock as a city was also one of the fastest growing suburbs in the United States at the time; it just didn't make sense to march more than 200-250 people in a single show in the circuits they wanted to compete in.
To put it into perspective, just a year prior they ranked 4th at BOA Grand Nationals. In 2014 they failed to even make it to UIL State prelims. They ended the season at 11th place at BOA San Antonio, which though wasn't bad, it was a much less successful season than 2013 was.
It could be argued that it gave them a slight advantage initially (2015 was their most successful regional/super regional season), but the coming years largely just maintained their standards rather than fostered grow competitively. I wouldn't say they've declined other than losing their 2011-2017 design team, but the marching arts just grew rapidly more competitive starting in 2017 while they've largely stagnated.
2019 was an exception I'd say. Despite the loss of their design team they managed to climb at Grand National Finals to 9th compared to 2017's 12th place finish. Though regrettably they missed finals entirely in 2021.

No kidding. They must have at least 25 keyboards.
