  • This part explains some lessons learned through the timing chain and cover installation. The water pump was also replaced but is well covered in other videos. I used Motorcraft TA357 RTV Silicone Sealant on the cover.

Lifting the motor up a little bit will allow you to drop straight down lol for future reference 😂

On the power steering, get an assortment of vacuum caps/plugs and just disconnect the 3/8 line, if you do it quickly, you don't have to drain the system, the just pull it around and lay the reservoir on top of the rear head then remove the low side line from the evaporator and you now have ample clearance.
One more thing I do is install a couple 8x1.25 studs to allow easier alignment of the timing cover, keeps you from having to hunt for the bolt holes.

its my understanding the VCT and exhaust cam sprocket use the same bolt ? So you need a total of 4 bolts for replacement ?

That's a good question. I don't see bolt specs in my manual. I'll try some other resources. Does anyone else know this answer?

Great video. Does that Ford repair manual explain how to replace the timing chain and sprockets with torque specs?

Thanks Gabriel and glad this is helpful. Yes, the Ford manual does a good job explaining the chain replacement and all torques involved. Sometimes you will see it repeating itself through related topics such as water pump replacement or just timing chain replacement, but that can be good ensuring you don't miss any important steps. Good Luck!

On bank 1 when you replace the chain guide... did the phase have to completely removed top bolt to remove the timing chain ....

Hi Henri. I’m sure you can get the main timing chain off while keeping the phasers installed. I removed the phasers so I could replace their chains also. I hope that helps you.

How do get cover in with out smugging the rtv off.. should you apply rtv on both cover and light amount to engine to ensure you didnt rub any thing off

Good question Henri. Caulk just the cover. Trying to get a good angle with a caulk gun on the motor is impossible without making a big mess. Take the cover upside down and tuck it under the firewall side phaser first then rotate it back after those big lobes (on the cover) pass below the front phaser. Then rotate further. I explain that around the 14:00 mark. Having an extra set of eyes on the motor side while you rotate the cover down will help. Go slow and god luck!

What did you use to seal the cover?

    • @sliceoflife1821

Great question Jonathan as I just realized I only mentioned the answer in Part 1 at 2:22min. I used Motorcraft TA357 RTV Silicone Sealant which is what the Ford Service manual recommends. I'll make a link to Part 1 in the description section above. Thanks for noticing this!

I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW TO GET THE TIMING COVER ON WITHOUT SMEARIMG THE GASKET SEALANT OFF?!?! I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING!!!

Sorry to hear you are having issues John. Totally understandable as it's very hard to avoid smearing the sealant. If you haven't already tried this, get another pair of hands to guide one area/side while you can concentrate on the other. Hang in there. You will get it done!
