  • This is part 1 of a double feature in which Jay and Josh discuss the two Suspirias! In this part, they focus on the original Dario Argento classic from 1977. Look out! Witches!

    Honestly this is the perfect platform for Josh. On BOTW he wants to recap those terrible movies beat by beat by beat, while the other three panelists generally don't care and will make jokes over the top of him, sometimes to his frustration. Here at least his attention to detail is worth the effort.

    • @Xelaeatyou
      @Xelaeatyou 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      The funniest bit in all of BOTW is when Josh yells at Mike and Rich talking amongst themselves while he’s explaining a film and he says “Im trying to talk about Dr Butcher” and Rich plainly says “No one cares.”

    Josh and Rich are my favorite re:view hosts. I always see comments complaining that they want more of Rich and Mike cracking jokes but I actually like the commentary these guys bring. Josh shines when he's in a focused, mostly-serious discussion, as seen with the episodes on Erasherhead, Fire Walk With Me, Martin, and Pink Flamingos. He always brings lots of good insights to the table even when everyone is ragging on him for not being hammy like Rich and Mike. I like crude jokes at the expense of elderly people and AIDs, but I also like articulate and impassioned film discussion.

      Additionally, I think Josh has some underrated lines that are funny not by virtue of him deliberately trying to be jokey, but just how he passionately he phrases stuff. I still think of the time they discussed "Wired to Kill" and Josh has this genuine exasperation his voice when he says "Becky _just_ wanted a place to fucking sleep." There's also the last episode of BotW where Mike is about to pull another "Vampire Assassin" and Josh immediately guesses what he's about to do, which I got a good chuckle from.

    I think that in a movie with a story like this one, the less you explain it, the better. I mean the most of the fear comes from the unknown, beside the fact that this is the first one of a thrilogy, and the plot it is explained better in the other two movies, I like the ending because it leaves you with feeling that evil is defeated and that there will be no more deaths. I think the fire is metaphoric. No need to know why it all started, the important thing is that it’s over.

    Finally!
    BTW, Suspiria isn't a giallo. Giallo is a mistery/crime/thriller. Basically a whodunit. There are no supernatural elements, and the people involved in the case can be detectives or not, that is not an important element. Every Poirot or Miss Marple case can be considered a giallo, as well as Nero Wolf and Sherlock Holmes. "Murder She Wrote" is "La Signora in Giallo" in italian (the lady in yellow). And Columbo, though the murderer is already known to the audience is a twist on a giallo, because it's about Columbo finding the proof that his suspect is the murderer.

    Loved that movie when I saw it the first time in 2018 in Freiburg, Germany in the AKA student's filmclub with my friend Sebastian who got a liking for special movies (Dario Argento, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Nicolas Winding Refn) :D Freiburg is the place where the film takes place. I liked the details. For example Argento could not get the real "Haus zum Walfisch" (house to the whale) for the shooting in Freiburg, so he built one himself which looks completly different except for the colour ^^ Erasmus von Rotterdam (1466-1536), a very wise writer, editor and philosopher lived in a house in Freiburg because he fled from Basel; he was the one who edited the bible manuscript which Martin Luther used for his translation although Luther was a Ockhamist (William of Ockham (1288-1347)) and critized Rotterdam in "De servo arbitrio". Luther thought that men are bound to the will of god and have therefore no right to act against god (a very voluntaristic conception I know ;) ) Argento tends to be really philosophical in "Profondo Rosso".

      And you know it's going to be Jay and Josh reviewing it, if they do.

    Hey guys, can you talk about mother of tears? Seen Suspiria and Inferno and want to know if the third part is worth watching. Also I love phenomena! That's my 2nd favourite Argento movie after Suspiria.

    The barbed wire sequence reminds me of The Pit.

    I was so disappointed when they didn't cast Adrian Brody as Daniel, the Blind Pianist in the remake.

      I could tell that line was coming by the way she pronounced the esses in their names and her voice sounded really familiar. It's always fun to spot a sample in its natural habitat.

    I hope one day you guys could do a retrospective on the works of Pietro Francisci. Why no mention of Joan Bennet?

    I like the new one more than the original, and I saw the original for the first time a few weeks before the new one.

      I’ve also seen Inferno and Deep Red and liked those more than the original Suspiria.

    During the same period Turkish cinema (which had an interesting back and forth relation with Italian cinema) was the same in dubbing. IIRC the reason is set/studio issues and sound capture quality. Also if you fuck up a line or a car passes by you don't have to reshoot and just roll with it. Makes it cheaper.
