Update: I revised my polishing method to this: - Center press only for 48 hours - Polish on ONLY the legs and leaf (yes, even for tactiles) - sent them off to a lube goblin to clean and lube - buttery smooth :)
Oh no, I definitely like diamond polished the best lol. You have some of the most helpful videos I've come across and are exactly what I'm looking for with no one else having done it the way im looking for, like this one and the all combination MM switches. Thank you!
i don’t find there’s any goal from trying so hard to get blacks to be smoother when jwk has p3 and LY stems, sure sound is different but is it worth the trouble
Well p3 stems all sound the same, I haven’t tried Ly stems yet. Cherry is a good standard for a reason ;) same could be said about adding foam to keyboards if there are boards that sound amazing without them, all preference :3
Interesting video! I am wondering though, is the difference between just lubed, lubed and broken in, or lubed and diamond polished very noticeable in terms of feel?
Diamond polishing with a break-in machine produces the smoothest MX Blacks IMO, though it's a lot easier to over-polish them that way. That sweet, deep Cherry sound makes it all worthwhile though 😍
Do you have a rough recipe? Do you think you could get there by just running them dry for longer? I thought about using sacrifical stems for most of the time to reduce stem wobble. Or making stems with an abrasive poweder glued to them.
Got a question about break in machines and switches, should I lube my switches before putting them through the break in machine or keep them stock to break them in and then lube them? Im planning on breaking in some MX blacks and just want to know what I should do for the best results. Amazing vid as well!!
Lube then afterwards! And make sure to keep them mated, don’t like bag lube or anything and match the top/bottom/stem to their respective switches otherwise it messes with the wear pattern!
I just ordered a break in Machine but didn’t bother with the extra offset parts. Do you think I will really need them? Shipping from overseas is a big inhibitor for extra orders
Is it possible/good idea to polish other scratchy switches eg. creams? Most videos I've seen in concerning switch polishing have only been on cherry switches.
i did my few latest batches with center press only for 48 hours (feng studio machines) and they're legit butter. I Also only put paste on the legs and leaf
I did it with 200k grit, 0.1 micron diamond paste and the results i get are rlly ok but not buttery smooth can you help me, i do 200k actuations and i pack the diamond paste on the stem until i cant see the color of the stem, also should i clean them with distilled water?
if they already lubed, you might have to unlube them by removing the lube with a ultrasonic cleaner and then apply the diamond paste, break in, then clean diamond paste out again, then relube.
I prefer breakin over diamond polish. Diamond polished blacks end up too shrill imo, and breakin switches still retain a bit of the character and scratch

Gimme ur diamond polish browns 👹👹
lolol the break in machine underneath the pillows is hilarious.
Broooo it’s like ear piercing loud 😭
You should see the foam-lined boxes some of us use to suppress the noise! Break in machines are super loud.
@@juchecatgirl oh I could imagine LOL my entire studio is sound treated so I leave them in there overnight 🫠

i feel like the scratch adds character
I like a bit of resistance
Same tbh, i use MX blacks only stem lubbed
Your camera work is superb! Keep up the great work!
Thank you! It’s a continual work in progress xD
Great video so helpful 😀
I prefer stock ones with just a bit of manual break-in and some Krytox on the stem because I'm one of the maniacs that actually likes the scratch.
same but all mx black now are mx2a sad not enough scratch😢
Very beautiful video
Thank you!
The stock cherries are fucking with me LOL
Just found out about diamond polishing switches. Time to spend a couple hours on these nixies...
I like vintage Blacks 😁
vint's are mid @ me, they feel the same as broken in blacks but the broken in blacks are 5 pin kekW
@@TofuTypes Totally agree.
i was considering diamond polish on mine but decided not to due to lack of ultrasonic cleaning tools
Stock but with lubed springs🗿

yes, very much so
oh yes it's very noticable, it's like a getting closer to jwk as you break in and then jwk smooth once you polish
@@TofuTypes dang, that’s good to know! I might have to get a break in machine now.

I think the scratch is a part of the switch and make them special

@@TofuTypes for sure, thank you so much for the help
@@TofuTypes Sorry got another question, would you recommend spring swapping mx blacks or do you use the stock springs on mx blacks?
@@michaelgonzalez4931 that's just personal preference
I just ordered a break in Machine but didn’t bother with the extra offset parts.
Do you think I will really need them?
Shipping from overseas is a big inhibitor for extra orders
Can you just leave the break in machine for hours?
Give or take 12 hours depending on the machine to play it safe
Is it possible/good idea to polish other scratchy switches eg. creams? Most videos I've seen in concerning switch polishing have only been on cherry switches.
Yes you can polish any switch you want, it's just most popular with MX Blacks.
It's just most popular with cherry switches because they are notoriously known to be some of the scratchiest switches on the market
how many actuations do you do for on and off center?
Typically I would do like 4 hours on each side and then another hour in the middle that should get you to like close to 300k
@@TofuTypes Any switches you can compare the smoothness to after break in?
@@lickriu like alpacas? There’s no scratch
@@TofuTypes Awesome. Thanks for the help 🙏
What's the recommended actuations for polishing? I don't wanna cook my switches lol.
i did my few latest batches with center press only for 48 hours (feng studio machines) and they're legit butter. I Also only put paste on the legs and leaf
@@TofuTypes gotcha, I’m gonna spend this weekend polishing some blacks like that. Thanks!
What wrist rest did you use with the 65% keyboard?
it's from the KFA groupbuy for a vega specific wrist rest!
@@TofuTypes I assumed that it was that. It is aluminum right?
@@bxnes9795 yup, quite cold in the morning
@@TofuTypes I remember I wanted to get one but now they sold out lol. I hope companies start making more aluminum wrist rests
Is it just me, or does the vega sound super muted?
Do you think breaking in detracts from the sound or no
it does clear up the sound so if you like hte scratch, i wouldn't break it in, otherwise if you want something clackier, breaking it does help
I did it with 200k grit, 0.1 micron diamond paste and the results i get are rlly ok but not buttery smooth can you help me, i do 200k actuations and i pack the diamond paste on the stem until i cant see the color of the stem, also should i clean them with distilled water?
I think you need to up the amount of actuations
And distilled is okay or tap is what I used
do you use pe pads on the vega?
Nope :c
what do u mean by cook?? 😅
You can over polish to the point of breaking the switch LOL
My vint blacks are at 100-150k actuations and are just a little scratchy, is it worth it to desolder them and diamond polish them or no?
i would say that is up to you to decide if you're willing to spend the time and money to do so..more so the time LMAO
if they already lubed, you might have to unlube them by removing the lube with a ultrasonic cleaner and then apply the diamond paste, break in, then clean diamond paste out again, then relube.
No need to risk the whole set. Try polishing just one switch which you can exile to rarely used key if the result is not to your liking.
I prefer breakin over diamond polish. Diamond polished blacks end up too shrill imo, and breakin switches still retain a bit of the character and scratch
what's that lube station?
it's from pevail key!
@@TofuTypes Thanks!
What wrist rest is that?
It’s from KFA it’s a Vega specific wrist rest, and the marble one for the tkl is from Etsy!
@@TofuTypes thanks!!!
How does the diamond polished MX Black compare to Alpaca Switches in terms of smoothness? Great vid btw
They’re just as smooth LOL
Why does it all sound the same and why does the stock sound cracked
i love you
nice vid
I like scratch just because.
