that's combined. and if you are in the reserve or guard, it's different. If you have a full time job and get called to active duty, some companies pay you a full salary. So on top of you normal 9-5 salary, you get a basic salary plus other allowance from the military, you can actually make quite a bit in a year. Plus if you go on travel orders, you get per diem on top of all that and food is covered.... you get paid if you claim a dependent. So yeah. we aren't necessarily broke in the military. The tax benefits are huge as well in some cases.

They are doing it right. US military service grants free education and housing in exchange for service. I don’t know why people are so terrified with “service “ when most people in the military don’t think or feel they are serving. When there are no major wars, US military service is a cheat code to middle class.. last major war that included a draft ended in 1975, Vietnam war, almost 50 years ago. Every body thinks veterans going homeless is the norm.. we need to help our veterans that go homeless but they are not the norm. Most veterans are successful and thriving.

@@player8967 I don't think CNBC should even be doing a make it episode on these two. Being married especially being officers is literally a free ticket to financial freedom. Only people that never have any money in the military and in debt are the ones that spend it drinking and drugs. Yes they get drug tested but certain drugs don't show a positive result.

In addition to the different pay scales between enlisted and officers, there are additional sign up bonuses and retention bonus that comes with certain specialties such as pilot, doctors and lawyers etc. For example, a 63N (oral surgeon) or a 61Z (neurosurgeon) can get up to $600k sign up bonus for 4 years of service . They also get free health care and free food in base. They literally have a free ticket unlike non military people where we have to pay for everything from our own salary. Of course, they have ALL that money saved and invested. Military personnel have and get soo many benefits that CIVILIANS DO NOT.
    1. No down payment to buy a house.
    2. Free housing = mortgage is paid by the military with left over $$ to use for saving and investing.
    3. Free college= no student loans to pay back.
    4. Free health care= no health insurance premiums, co-pays or balances to pay or worry about
    5. Free monthly stipend EACH for groceries. Groceries are ALSO already discounted at the military commissaries/ Px and exchange.
    6. Free medications
    7. Discounted gasoline on base
    8. Discounted daycare
    9. Military discounts at mamy restaurants and other establishments.
    10. Extra pay for being married.
    11. Extra pay based on the type of job.
    🍎🍎 to 🍊🍊
