    I saw recently where there is a school system in New Jersey where some parents are protesting that the students are being taught the basics of Islam. They should understand that there is a difference between being taught about an ideology, as compared to being indoctrinated into that ideology. So schools should teach the basics of the world's various religions. A supplemental course might be to analyze the problems and benefits these ideologies place on the various cultures of the world.

      @@mysterio22 I would suggest the word, "theology" over ideology. "Ideology" carries a normative judgment in contemporary culture. I teach religious studies/theology in a Catholic school. We have a World Religions class that is accepted by the University of California as a social science elective. However, when I teach a class in Catholic theology, it is looked upon as too partisan, or "ideological", for similar acceptance as a college prep, "A-G" requirement. My experience of approximately thirty years of teaching this course is that students are very open to it.

      +abcz98 The teachings of Muhammad and Islam are varied and contradictory, the Qu'ran even says this explicitly. To treat it like a single ideology would be simple minded. If you're an atheist you should be able to look at the Bible and Qu'ran through an impartial lens. If people didn't believe in them literally they'd be held in the same esteem as Dante's Inferno and Homer's epics. You're lucky enough to have the opportunity to appreciate them in that way.

      +Ravi Achan There have been Muslims throughout history who have been beneficial to mankind as far as scholarly contributions. The religion of Islam did not contribute to that. In more recent times Islam has worked as a negative to the accumulated knowledge of mankind by mandating a denial of scientific research and findings. The denial of the Theory of Evolution is an example. To a lesser degree Christianity has the same shortcoming. For a religion to actually contribute to human enlightenment, intellectual advances have to be found in the texts of the various religions.

    • @threeofive9401
      @threeofive9401 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mikesfavorite I agree with you except that I think a religion can promote what you refer to as scholarly contributions by the religion imploring followers to explore all fields of science without restrictions. I'll have to think if there is a religion that qualifies. None that I can think of right off.

      I'd argue that the scholarly tradition of Islam is what encouraged the intellectuals I mentioned, and that they wouldn't have existed without Islam. Though I absolutely agree that in the last centuries it's been detrimental to intellectual development in the regions that follow it.

    I'd just like to add some clarification:
    1. Makkah is only viewed as a symbolic "house of god". Just as any other mosque in any other place is viewed as a "house of god". Muslims do not believe that God literally resides in these places.
    2. Presence of two witnesses is not a necessary condition for a person converting to Islaam. Islaam is a covenant between a man and God, intervention of a mediator in this relationship isn't necessary at all.
    3. "There is not god but god" isn't a good translation of the testimony of faith. It is better translated as "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah".

  • @azibshahid

    Great Introductory video!!
    Just one more thing:
    Muslims believe that the Torah, Psalms and Gospels were revealed as words from God but over the course of many many years there have been many changes/additions/subtractions in those texts. So we don't know what to consider an actual word of God and what not. On the other hand the Quran, we believe, is 100% word of God with no human intervention.
    That's why we don't follow the other books.

    • @bowrudder899
      @bowrudder899 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, if you compare Surah 3:146 in the Hafs and Albazzi versions, for example, you will find that they say different things, and it's not just "dialect". They actually contrast. Presumably one was original and the other is not.

    • @hitman55001
      @hitman55001 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@bowrudder899 Can you provide proof to support your claim that the versions "actually contrast" and "not just dialect"?
      Did you even bother checking with any credible Islamic source, or was it easier to parrot some dishonest anti-Islam websites with an obvious biased narrative?
      Anyways, here are a couple of videos:
      1- Was the Quran Ever Changed? - Dr. Shabir Ally
      th-cam.com/video/kSfpFia2RQc/w-d-xo.html
      It took five seconds to find.
      2- Different qirat - Yasir Qadhi (different readings/recitations)
      th-cam.com/video/LDSBOMK2M2g/w-d-xo.html
      It took me 30 minutes to find, because I first needed to read and learn about this subject which is not commonly known to the average Muslim.
      I must say, thank you for bringing up this subject. Learning about the different citations gave me more reason to appreciate the linguistic novelty of the Qur'an.

    • @bowrudder899
      @bowrudder899 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hitman55001, You ask for proof that different Arabic Qurans actually contrast, they aren't just versions of the same thing. That is easy to show if you can get your hands on an Albazzi Quran and compare the translation of Surah 3:146 in the Albazzi with the Hafs Quran. The two differ. They do not say the same thing: In one the Hafs it says that "many a prophet fought", whereas in the Albazzi it says "many a prophet was killed". Obviously there is a difference between merely fighting and being killed; in the one case you have supper that night, in the other you don't. That is just one example. There are many more. It's open to independent verification; just get your hands on the Albazzi Quran and see for yourself.

    • @hitman55001
      @hitman55001 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@bowrudder899 Thanks for your response. I looked into that verse and many others, in different Qur'anic versions.
      This case can definitely be confusing to anyone who does't read Arabic or is not familiar with the linguistic and cultural evolution in the Arabian area. The following is a long response, but I hope it answers any questions.
      There are a few errors in your analysis.
      1)
      The supposed two different words used in the Hafs and Albazzi versions are قَاتَلَ (qaa-tala) and قُتِلَ (qu-tila). In today's standardized traditional Arabic, these two words are understood as 'fought' and 'was killed' respectively.
      However, both words come from the root word قَتَلَ (qatala). The word 'qatala' means 'fought', 'killed', or BOTH.
      This means, that even in today's standardized Arabic, both words قَاتَلَ (qaa-tala) and قُتِلَ (qu-tila) are interchangeable and can be understood in either or both ways. They are synonyms, not contrasts. And you'll usually find them alongside each other in any Arabic dictionary
      I took the time and investigated all the other "different" words in the different Qur'anic versions that I managed to find online, the same logic applies to all of them. No conflict in meaning was found.
      2)
      The evolution of language and culture.
      It's illogical to apply the language standard of today to how the language was communicated fourteen centuries ago.
      Both 'qaa-tala' and 'qu-tila' may have two different uses and can be considered two different words today, but that's only because we're using today's standardized Arabic which was put together and accepted by a relatively modern official entity to make the language more user friendly.
      Remember, in the past, each tribe had its own dialect. Some of which were so unique and bazaar sounding to the common Arabic speaker today. Yet, all of their dialects and speech manners were equally legitimate and understood by the community then. Here are a couple of examples:
      Example A: Arabic from ancient times
      ليس من البر الصيام في السفر
      lai-sa me'nal bir-ri as-siyamu fil-safar
      ليس من امبر امصيام في امسفر
      lai-sam mimam bir-rim siya-mum fem-safar
      Both sentences literally translate "It's not of good deed to fast (worship) while traveling". They both mean the exact same thing.
      Notice both writings and pronunciations are strikingly different. A common Arabic speaker today wouldn't even be able to read or understand the second dialect. Yet, these two vastly different dialects were equally understood and considered equally Arabic to the common Arabian of the past.
      Example B: Arabic from modern day
      The Arabic word for 'cat' in modern day can be:
      قطة 'qit-tah' in one dialect
      بسينه 'bsai-neh' in another dialect
      Again, notice how differently written and pronounced each word is. Yet, these two different words have the exact same meaning (cat).
      3)
      Different languages are not equal.
      It's illogical and unjust to translate an Arabic word that means and describes two things at the same time ('qatala') into two different words in another language (English 'fought' and 'killed') then claim they are two different words in Arabic.
      Besides, even if you apply modern Arabic language standard and argue that 'qaa-tala' and 'qu-tila' are two different words, the meaning behind those two words is still exactly the same.
      ---
      In conclusion, in the different versions of the Qur'an, some words surely differ in pronunciation and writing (by today's language standard), but the meaning and the message behind them is consistent and do not contrast or conflict. In that sense, there are no changes in the Qur'an.

      The Quran is now understood to have been evolving after Mohammad’s death. There are no complete Qurans inspite of the fact that Mohammad had scribes to document the supposed words of allah. And inspite of the fact that Abu Bakr after Mohammadks death destroyed all variant copies and introduced his standard. The oldest copies of the Qurans in museums today do not resemble the Qurans today. So do not believe the saying that the Qurans are preserved because they are uniform and identical. Islam is an amalgam of various religions of Mohammad’s day as he attempted to appeal to everyone to gain a following.

    Simple and straight path seems to be: One and only One Creator/sustainer of the universe. He makes His business to provide guidance and values for mankind to live by. A guidance free of superstition, which provides a way to implement social welfare, equality [degree of status for humans should be based on piety and good behavior], justice, compassion, tolerance and accountability both in this and the world hereafter. It is easy to believe that guidance for mankind was provided by choosing Messengers from humans who received Revelation and passed it on by having it documented and by exemplary behavior. Instead of us defining what God Almighty is, let Him tell us.

      Well . There is too many reasons . But the most important one is because they are colonizing a sacred place for muslims which is : The mosque" Al Aqsa" in palestine . We believe that Mohammed peace be upon him had been there in :al israa and miraaj incident (im not excellent in english you can read about it to understand me i couldn t explain it) adding to the fact that in the begins of the final message islam , muslims were praying in the direction of al aqsa , not to mecca in Saudi Arabia. Then the order of god came so that it changes , also , muslims and especially some arab muslims are angry from j@@ ews because "eventhough they have arabic blood" a lot of them stood in the side of colonialism and betrayed their communities . The problem is more complicated than it seems . And thats is all what i had . Thx

      He is actually mistaken Bassam. The story is after Prophet Muhammad (SAW) split the Moon, a Hindu King all the way from India in the land of Kerala had witnessed the Moon split that day and heard a few merchants saying there was a Prophet in Arabia who had split the Moon. So he travelled to Arabia and met the Prophet and converted to Islam. He came back to Kerala and built the Oldest Mosque that is in India today.

      @Nihaar2121warrior 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is no violence in Quran. Fighting verses in Quran are historical against a specific group as the Quraysh Meccans and Byzantine Romans as with 9:29 revealed on the battlefield since they waged war against the Muslims first and persecuted them kicking them out of their homes from Mecca. These fighting verses were revealed on battlefield for Muslims to fight in Self-Defense.

    It's confusing to me, especially when my family has seen reams of papers and roll after roll of videotape from the ones who killed our loved ones talking about the "will of God being to kill Americans in their homeland." And all sorts of other statements that sound to me like the people in question were stark-raving crazy but they obviously believed what they were saying. Even w/out knowing Arabic you could listen to the sound of their voices (and the conviction in it) that THEY believed themSELVES.
    And people even called bin Laden "the Sheikh" which seems like a title of respect to me, further confusing me.
    Of course right after it happened an Imam said "bin Laden and his friends have gone crazy and forgotten Islam."
    I've never forgotten it bc it was so unusual to hear it and besides, I've never heard it from anyone else since the day I read it.

    Hadith is pronounced as "Hadis", just so you know, we respect Muhammad. Incest is a sin. Having more than one wife is NOT a sin - and this polygamic relationship must have an APPROVAL by his wife. We believe that our bodies are created from god, so to alter these bodies in any way is a sin - that is why we cannot be transexual.
    But the thing is, not every muslim is as religious as the last, some of them become "Murtads", people who act like a muslim but does not respect the CORRECT morals and rules that it's been trying to make light to.
    We have an iron clad rule. That is to respect other religions.

    • @Sabrina-om9ng
      @Sabrina-om9ng 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hbk711x if you don't get proper consent, then the wife has full rights to get a divorce and compensation from the husbands (when they first get married -money is given to the newly weds- so during a divorce, you have to pay that amount)

    • @Sabrina-om9ng
      @Sabrina-om9ng 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hbk711x just like the times, the people have changed as well, muslims can voice out their rights now, so if you don't get proper approval but you still get married - the man is then judged as "Murtad", but since Islam isn't that strict in most countries and it's not like there are people who keep tabs on you 24/7 and judge you as "Murtad" right away - these people could get away with it.
      It's complicated
