A prominent Christian(Orthodox) saint was a close adviser(practically a prime minister) to the Caliph. If we only knew more information like these, our perception of history would have been much wider. If only our Western Christians could be more knowledgeable of the history of the Church and of actual early Church teachings, we would have less invasions of the Muslim world and less servitude to Israel.

Often people in the west think that they were the only civilized beings in history......and it is for them that the entire world has gained sanity.....
But, often they forget that asia, especially India, East Asia and the Middle East were far ahead in intellectual progress.....
They enjoyed quarter relations, trade and intellectual exchange among themselves...
Indian intellectual progress was at its pinnacle during Gupta period....which is known as Golden period in Indian history....
Many philosophical, literary , astronomical , scientific texts were translated into Persian and then into Arabic....
Many Indian intellectual ideas emerged into China and South east Asia through the spread of Buddhism from India....
Silk trade route was a means of cultural and intellectual exchange between India and China....
Many Arab traders used to come to India for goods and also stayed here for the translation of many texts....to ship it back to the Middle east.....
The western view of looking at history is extremely racist, discriminatory, judgemental, self centered and mostly based on western supremacy.....that needs to change...

It isn't educational. It repeats myths about the MGA as facts. The MGA has been debunked by numerous scholars, scientists, historians and philologists. (I'll.find out who invented the term. The "golden age" comes from the Spanish Empire (edad de oro) not the muslim (snd the gold was real gold not a metaphor) so even the title and concept is borrowed. Its ridiculous and insulting that muslims take credit and make political capital from learning that came out of 4,000 year old Vedic Sanskrit culture. Did you hear that Sanskrit, Chinese, Persian and Greek books were translated into Arabic not the other way round? Afghanistan was a Sanskrit speaking culture. Now look at it :-( Perhaps you should check and make your mind up who provides facts and who makes feel good propaganda?

This knowledge came ftom countries snd cultures which were forcefully colonised by muslim arabs. Up to 60, 000, 000 hindus were killed in Bharat (what is now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan) Grow up with your fake innocence.

Great video as always, and good job listing other sources , it is nice to see that even European philosophers and histories admit to the contribution islam did. Many might argue "Islam didn't have any impact on those scholars but is just human excellence and had nothing to do with religion".
While yes indeed people like alkhawarismi were brilliant people , Islam was their motivator. Remember the first verse that was revealed to Mohammad? It literally says "Read" , and one of Mohammad traditions that he said : "Seeking knowledge obligatory for every and each muslim".
Just final remark, there won't have been a western Renaissance if it wasn't for the contributions of muslim scholars to the fields of Math, medicine, etc, scholars no matter their ethnicity and religion where placed at hight regard while in Europe they were regard as "blasphamey" and executed.
let that sink in for all the butthurt people about this series.

It is ironic to think that, every invention is only related to ancient Greek.
I can say the same thing,
There wouldn’t be a Greek civilization if it wasn’t for ancient Babylonian, Assyrian, Sumerian, Akkadian, phonetician, Persian, Egyptian, Chinese, and Indian civilizations, and so on... Don't you know that Greece is near the Middle East where Egypt and the cradle of civilization (Ancient Sumer) ever existed?
The Greeks sometimes take the credit for inventing mathematics, and other inventions, but, as we know, they learned their math, technology, and other sciences from the Egyptians then later developed and improved upon what the Egyptians achieved. 3000 BC appears to have been a critical time for the development of technology.
As we also know, that many of the most important Greek scholars and Greeks have studied in Egypt - Pythagoras, Thales, Solon, Plato, Eudoxus, and many… So I can say that the Greek civilization is derived from Egypt. As you said before that Islamic civilization is derived from Greek civilization.
As we know, before Christ, there was no civilization except for Greek civilization in Europe, so most of the Westerners/Europeans, if not all of them, are trying their best to be associated with ancient Greeks, even though the Greeks were invaders.
All I can say that there's something called "human civilizations" because each civilization did invent something and other civilizations did develop and improve upon those inventions.
I can give you some important inventions which invented in the Middle East:
      * Cuneiform script - First writing system
      * Alphabet - the first alphabetic writing system and the first fully phonemic script which invented by the phoneticians (Ancient Sumer - modern-day Lebanon).
      * The Oldest Civilization - Ancient Sumer (the first urban civilization where civilized societies truly began to take shape).
*The oldest Empire (Akkadia was the world's first empire. It was established in Mesopotamia around 4,300 years ago after its ruler, Sargon of Akkad - Duration: 180 years).
The Code of Hammurabi - The first-ever law is codified by the Babylonian King Hammurabi.
      *Wheel
      *Sailboat
      *Metallurgy
      *Astronomy
      *Calendar - Sumerian calendar
      *Plow
*Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry (The first basic and complex mathematics are invented by the Babylonians and Egyptians).
I find it difficult to mention all the important inventions before the existence of Ancient Greece.
You have to open your mind, do your own search, and learn about the history of other civilizations.

for people who dont want to type the long text at the end, here
“During all the first part of the Middle Ages, no other people made as important a contribution to human progress as did the Arabs, if we take this term to mean all those whose mother-tongue was Arabic, and not merely those living in the Arabian peninsula. For centuries, Arabic was the language of learning, culture and intellectual progress for the whole of the civilized world with the exception of the Far East. From the ninth to the twelfth century there were more philosophical, medical, historical, religious, astronomical, and geographical works written in Arabic than in any other human tongue.”

What you just said and what I saw just struck me, and made me aware of such error you are in.
Islamist groups first off were started when Ali Ibn Abi Talib's troops (some of them) which deserted from his army during the times when Ali Ibn Abi Talib was concentrating on trying to put down rebellions against Muawiyah and soon his son Yazid which would try to claim the title of Caliph.
For those troops who deserted and went for the mountains around Iran soon began to come up with an ideology, basically in short they would follow Islam but would show hostility and would fight everyone who was not in their faith, i.e almost everyone, which had serious flaws which generally was against Islam, infact to this day the radicalists fight muslims and christians, they are traitors and are misguided. If you do not know, which you probably would tend to not, Islam teaches to protect the person regardless of their religion, or rephrasing it, not forcefully converting anyone, and letting them co-exist. Explain to me why there was still a Nestorian minority inside Baghdad around the time when the mongols were sieging them?

There was no golden age of islam. All the knowledge from Vedics and Greeks is from thousands of years before islam. The propaganda is just to make muslims and SJWs happy.

    • @Claireblue

shaafimath The wrong way round. Arabs colonised other countries and absorbed their knowledge and passed it on. Certain Persians familiar with Greek science built on it. Alberuni's translator and editor Edward Sachau wrote: "It is Brahmagupta who taught Arabs mathematics".
The sin and cos functions of trigonometry, were important mathematical concepts, imported from the Gupta period of Indian astronomy namely the jyā and koṭi-jyā functions via translation of texts like the Aryabhatiya and Surya Siddhanta, from Sanskrit to Arabic, and then from Arabic to Latin, and later to other European languages.
Manka, an Indian physician at the court of Harun al-Rashid is said to have translated the Sushruta (the classical (Gupta-era) Sanskrit text on medicine) into Persian.
A large number of Sanskrit medical, pharmacological and toxicological texts were translated into Arabic under the patronage of Khalid, the vizier of Al-Mansur.
The Arabs utilized the Indian cartographic system in which the northern hemisphere was considered to be the inhabited part of the earth and divided into nine parts. Its four geographical limits were djamakut in the east, rum in the west, Ceylon as the cupola (dome) and Sidpur.
In short, Arabs were heavy plagiarizers.

i think, the main problem of common muslims and including most of their Quranic scholars, are too much "legalistic," (fiqh oriented), as if ayatollah (god guidance) is only one: al Quran (holy scripture) and its derivatives (hadist, ijma, qiyas, etc). factually, God him self, in very first revelation to Muhammad, is not asking Muhammad to study (iqra) the holy Quran (cos the kitab doesn't exist at that day), instead He command Muhammad to study (iqra) other ayatullah, we called as ayat Kauniyah (universe and all of His Creations in it). That why in serious and encyclopedic Islamic traditional school, we always taught that beside al Quran, there is another god guidance (ayatullah) called ayat kauniyah (the universe and all god creation in it). and for qur'anic scholars, we also know --from al Quran it self, there are two others god guidance (ayatullah), that we as muslims should seek for God Guidances: called as ayat insaniyah (human being) and ayat tarikhiyyah (human history).
if common muslims and it scholars, uses all 4 God Guidance in balanced ways, we will not always fall into legalistic point of view when we talking or examining Islam point of view about woman/feminism, politics, evolution, LGBTQ issues, democracy, secularism, separation between religion and state, on terrorism, etc. for me, if sociology, political science, statistics, history on the rise and fall of civilizations/countries (as interpreters of ayat kauniyah and ayat tarikhiyyah) comes to the conclusion that democracy with separation between religion and state, is the best political system in the world for advancement human civilizations, then all Muslims should choose democracy with separation between religion and state, as preferable political system to practice in all Muslims majority countries.
also if expert on biology, doctors, psychiatry, etc (as interpreter of ayat kauniyah and ayat insaniyah) , said that beside man and woman (as gender), we also has intersex, hemaprodyte, woman with more testosterones, man with more X chromosome, etc, then all Muslims should choose to agree that god him self gave us guidance / ayat that beside man and woman as gender, there also another genders/pronouns that we should cherish, protect, and respect (cos if we don't respect others God Creations, are similarly with we don't respect our God as their Creator).
if we stubborn, only picks, one ayatullah, we called al Quran (holy scripture/ayat Qauliyah), as the one and only god guidance to follow, then muslims and it scholars, will always fall upon into legalistic point of view (fiqh oriented) when we examining what is islamic point view on everything under the sky. wahabbiyah, isis, al Qaida, etc are trapped in this narrow point of view about Islam and its believe. of course, for responsible and encyclopedic islamic teaching, all those narrow point views on Islam are wrong (at least incomplete), misguided, and disrespecting God.
umar bin khattab, as on of few sahabah (closed friend of Prophet), several times choose to disregarding some textual issues stated clearly in al Quran, and pick other decision after he choose as Muhammad successor, as leader (khalifah/amir), if there are more fairer and more justice way (socially) on making decision as Amir/Leader, rather than choose from what already state very clear in al Quran. he always choose more fairer and more justice decisions, even others sahabah question his decision. and as we know it, umar bin khattab is one of several sahabah (closed friend of Prophet) that guaranteed (informed) by the Prophet that he is going to heaven. his way of leadership decision, was a hard evidence that the closest friend to Muhammad, also not only consider holy scripture (ayat Qauliyah), but also social aspect, fairness, and justice (ayat kauniyah), when he making decision as a leader.
nobody in umar bin khattab time, dare to called umar bin khattab as heretic/bid'ah, kuffar, or infidel. but in modern era, several of loud muslims, loud muslim scholars, and most of jihadist will immediately call us heretic/bid'ah, kuffar, or infidel if we also uses 3 other God Guidance's beside ayat Qauliyah, when we speak, analyze, examining islamic point of view on everything under the sun. how strange is it, if we following completes God Guidance's, then be called as infidel, kuffar, or bid'ah. legalistic approach (fiqh oriented) on Islam has bad impact on advancement of Islamic civilization, and has backward effect on development of its peoples: the Muslims. but yes, in Islamic jurisprudence (ushul fiqh), we also has similar concept with Umar way, but unfortunately has more narrowed approach and clearly far from sufficient to be implemented in modern era, we call them: maslahah mursalah (public good principle) and maqashid syariah (ratio legal over legal specific).
if muslims also incorporate social science, biology, technology, history, political science, psychology, etc (as part of rightful interpreter all of God Guidancs/ayatullah), many problem we faced today in many part of Muslim countries, will be addressed in responsible way. Muhammad him self, in his own word (Hadits Bukhari Collection no 6015), said: muslims should follow person with specific expertise on handling matter, so let political scientist handle political matter, health matter should handle by doctors, etc. do not let everything under authority of quranic expert. in general, muslim should treat expert on other ayatullah (scientist as rightful interpreter whole universe and all of His Creations in it, as rightful interpreter human being behavior and it history) equal to expert on holy scripture (al quran). Furthermore, on all wide range of social issues, every new founding/understanding as result from responsible research by scientist, should supersede (abrogate) any old interpretation from holy scripture, cos all of new founding/understanding as result from responsible research by scientist, are also rightful interpreter of God Guidance (ayatullah). falling to do so, should be interpreted as a disqualified argument/opinion.
Many argument/opinion base on fiqh (islamic legal specific), kalam (theology) and falsafah (philosophy), factually in most areas are quite obsolete for addressing social, economic, and political problem in modern era, cos most of them are derived only from ayat Qauliyah (Quranic centric), which is an incomplete way to sorting our problem in modern era. Most of old argument/opinion already supersede/abrogated by new founding/understanding as result from responsible research by scientist. Muslims should back to the complete of God Guidance in balance way on solving problem in Muslims world, not only using holy scripture as final say. and stop kuffar/infidel calling game, cos that game from a complete, genuine, and responsible interpretation of 4 God Guidances, is simply un islamic.
and, as an open end conclusion, there is a deeper question: why common muslims and its scholars dare to disregarding 3 other God Guidance's? why muslims and its scholars become legalistic (only focus on 1 ayatullah / 1 God Gudance (ayat Qauliyah) called alquran, as if salvation of a civilization fate can be and must be depend on 1 cause only? as brief answer is: corruption and abuse of power by people in high power, it cronies, and big business that closed to muslim countries rulers at that time. all of them, almost single handedly creates and propagate common muslims and its scholars into disregarding 3 other God Guidance's.
peoples in power, it cronies, and big business that closed to muslim countries rulers push and push relentlessly to narrow interpretation on morals and public interest thru perverted interpretation on the holy scripture. even, they dare to appoint unqualified islamic scholar as qadi for them to uses as fatwa producers in favors to their vested interest. since then, islamic civilization goes down spiral into inevitable decline from it's greatness. many fatwa produced in their regime will makes serious, genuine, and responsible islamic scholar scratching their head and shocked. fatwa on mihnah policy, on banning printing technology, banning radio, tv, google, youtube, etc, are among of perverted interpretation on holy scripture. it lead to tradition/repetition/reinforcement on using narrow interpretation islamic law for beating and punishing dissent and discontent on social injustice in islamic society.
furthermore, it lead islamic society to become close minded, anti science, and trapped in textual approach tradition on just 1 god guidance called al quran (ayat Qauliyah) only, with narrow and more narrow interpretation. common muslim today and it scholar today are the real victims of bad fatwa born from dark alliance between high power, it cronies, big business that closed to muslim rulers before them. lets wake them up, by spreading the real genuine of God Guidance's and it's rightful interpreters that we called: sciences. amen.

Infinite knowledge is not needed to right the wrong about Islam and it’s history. Infinite knowledge is not required to know that the religion is not represented by it’s peoples, but instead the Quran.
Knowing the right things can be very simple or very difficult depending on the people you go to to learn.
Knowing that the true Islam from the teachings of the Quran is a peaceful guidance takes simple unbiased research from unbiased sources.
But judging from your comments I guess you have been so brainwashed with propaganda machines who talk big and view Islam as a symbol of hate and Muslims as non-humans.

shimy If I remember correctly, they began as an observation of the fact that triangles have constant ratios. I guess that the difficult part was finding a way to explain and represent that.
Like, they could do sin as opp / hyp, and they could do cos as adj / hyp. And so, they could do tan as sin / cos.
I would assume that they would be able to do this without having a particular definition of these functions as functions of the angle.

First of all there is allot of misinformation in this video . The fact that the last quote by Phillip Hitti implies that : " no other people but Arabs contributed" is nonsense since most of the scientists in the Muslim world were non-Arabs. They were Persians( Including the four you used in the video: Khwarizmi, Khayyam, Buzjani, and Marwazi , ) and they came out of the Iranian-Intermezzo period. These Persian Muslim dynasties were independent from the Abbasid Caliphs because at that time; the Arabs did not have power any more. The Persians translated works into Persian for the Iranian plateau and Central Asia and Arabic for the western half of the Muslim world. The Abbasid caliphs were maintained by Iranians and Turks as figureheads before the Mongol invasion.
The Arabs only had political control for 158 years in the Middle East. The beginning of the Rashidun and Umayyad Dynasty lasted 89 years before being overthrown by a Persian rebel Behzadab Pur i Vandad Hormoz( known as Abu Muslim Khorasani) establishing a Persianate Abbasid dynasty. After 69 years the Abbasid were totally overthrown by native Persian dynasties culminating in many scientists and philosophers in the Islamicate Golden Age. As a matter of fact, Persian and Persiante dynasties of the Turco-Persians had the longest lasting Muslim dynasties, and throughout those times; many scientists were Persians and non Arabs.
The Persian Samanid, Buyid, and others is the time where you see many famous Persian scientists come out of the Muslim world. You also forgot to mention the Turco-Persian Empires of the Seljuks and the Kwarazmian Empire which contradicts the fact that Arabs ruled all the way up the Mongolian invasion. The Muslim world was not primarily an Arab civilization and they did not rule long. Persians wrote in both Arabic because Arabic was the lingua franca of the western half of the Islamic world but they also wrote and used Persian as the language of science in the Persian and Persiante world as Persian was the lingua franca of that area. So to accredit Persian scientist translation of works into Arabic as an Arab achievement is disingenuous.
The Tunisian Arab historian Ibn Khaldun even corroborates that, it is a remarkable fact that with few exceptions, most Muslim scholars…in the intellectual sciences have been non-Arabs:
"Thus the founders of grammar were Sibawaih and after him, al-Farisi and Az-Zajjaj. All of them were of Persian descent…they invented rules of (Arabic) grammar…great jurists were Persians… only the Persians engaged in the task of preserving knowledge and writing systematic scholarly works. Thus the truth of the statement of the prophet becomes apparent, 'If learning were suspended in the highest parts of heaven the Persians would attain it"…The intellectual sciences were also the preserve of the Persians, left alone by the Arabs, who did not cultivate them…as was the case with all crafts…This situation continued in the cities as long as the Persians and Persian countries, Iraq, Khorasan and Transoxiana (modern Central Asia), retained their sedentary culture.
Muqaddimah, Translated by Franz Rosenthal (III, pp. 311-15, 271-4 [Arabic]; R.N. Frye (p.91). He translated the Arabic word "Ajam" into "Persians."
Even the Abbasid Caliph Al Ma'mun said: " The Persians ruled for a thousand years and did not need us Arabs for a day. We have been ruling them for one or two centuries and cannot do without for an hour."
Therefore, this should be noted before posting up ridiculous quotes by Phillip Hitti that "Only Arabs" contributed to the Muslim World.
I would also look up and read a book called:
    The golden age of Persia
    Book by Richard N. Frye

Thanks to say the truth about Persia. But I need to Add :
First the name is Kharazmi like the city he was born in not Al Kharazmi he was not Arab. He was Persian and his name was Arabized. Like the name of Sina who has been Latinized to Avicen ( father of medicine) prevent people to understand that the roots of sciences are not European but from Iran.
The first university in world was in Iran in 230 the name is GondiShapour. 370 years before Arab invasion.
It’s easy to understand who brought culture to whom!
To make it short Arabs were people of desert and totally illiterate they came in Iran or Persia ( Persia changed name in to Iran in 1935) During Arab invasion they destroyed and burned all books and tablets. Arabs attacked Byzantine empire first then Persian empire. Byzantine and Persians were weak and totally exhausted from years of battles. Persians has a 8 years old King and there were facing disagreements between local chiefs. Barmakians or Barmicides were a very famous Persian family who had made already schools for all Persian scientists. As a Persian Doctor a Member of Barmakian Family saved a Harun al Rashid family member , Harun al Rashid let the Iranian scientists working under Barmakians supervision . Arabs forced Iranians to translate their books and knowledges in to Arab. Kharazmi the famous Iranian scientist the father of Algebra and others worked in that schools in the Iranian city Ctesiphon (Real name in Farsi is Tisphoon the capital of Persian empire )all that dynamic was transferred to the city next to Ctesiphon that became Bagdad or Bay dad , bay means god in old Persian daad : give) Now days Arabs and Muslims try to use Persian scientists to furnish their empty scientific universe with (who were mostly Zoroastrien but got Arabic names by force under Killings torture and taxes like they did in North Africa with Kabyls and Berbers)check the Arab invasion atrocities in TARIKH TABARI vol 3 to 16.
Arabs generally add "Al" before Persian names. Persians had many scientists such as Kharazmi the father of algebra and algorithm,Tusi(astrology , trigonometry) Razi,( alcohol)Banou,(mechanics) Sina named Avicenne (Medecin) Haytham ( blood circulation and relation with respiration, Rumi, kashi theorem of same name etc etc all their works and books has been translated to Arab then arrived to Europe by Arab merchants and invasion of North Africa then translated in monasteries in to Greek and Latina and used, copy by scientists Kepler,Copernic,Newton ,Descartes ,DaVinci etc. Some parts of their books are total plagia of Persian books with 100% same sketches.
Persians had thousands of years of technological and cultural Advance so Islam or Arab invasion did not bring Sciences and Alphabet to Persia but the contras. Persians made an Alphabet to Arabs from Pahlavi so the Coran was written.
So pls kindly go and Study exactly what happened before and propaganda about Arabs invasion and so called “golden age “. Islam and even Christianity (inquisition )were always against scientific theories and discovered.
If Islam and Arabs were so advanced , today Arabic Peninsula Zander North Africa would be Silicon Valley.
The Persians glory has been stopped by Arab invasion and just after Mogol invasion that left Persia knock out.
