    To anyone still wondering what he does, I pulled the audio into my DAW to check for myself.
    The kick is on the 1 and 3.
    The snare on the 2 and 4 are pre-shifted by 1/32. (Some thought that they were quintuplets, but those would be too much)
    Also every second hi-hat is pre-shifted by 1/32. He also playes the pre-shifted hi-hat not nearly as loud, which helps the feel of the groove.
    So since the snares are pre-shifted, it feels like the groove speeds up, but then because the distance between the snare and the second hi-hat is normal (1/8th note, but still pre-shifted) it now takes 1/32 longer for the kick to hit again and thus creates this dragging effect.

    I enjoy the influence Dilla's legacy has had on drummers since he checked outta town.
    The "unquantized" feeling of that "drunken" beat feel is awesome, and so it is also awesome to see drummers interpret Dilla as he played those grooves with his fingers on his MPC 3000, humanizing it.

  • @gtorp9397
    @gtorp9397 6 ปีที่แล้ว +678

    allright i think i figured out what the hell he's doing.
    in the beginning, he's playing a 4/4 beat but with quintuplets. so every count is divided into 5 quintuplets instead of 4 sixteenth notes. What he does now is, instead of playing the snare on the 2 and the 4, he plays them óne quintuplet earlier, so on the fifth quintuplet of the 1st and 3rd count. This puts you off because you're tricked into thinking he plays them on the 2 and the 4, making it sound like he's playing a delayed 1 or some shit like that.
    after that he slowly moves the snare back to the 2 and 4.
    really cool groove, i've never heard anything like this before.

      i dont think thats it either. i probably explained my idea in a very weird way. we're saying almost the same thing except i think now you're missing 1 sixteenth note after the snare. so the kick is still on the 1 and the snare is still on the 5th sixteenth, but i think it's a 10/8 groove and not a 9/8 as you're describing it.

    • @jomarizavalla8200
      @jomarizavalla8200 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      in my understanding on the crazy kick pattern part. its just all displacement. Putting the kick on a 32nd note place. The counting is in 4/4 1e&a . First putting the kick on the count 1, but its not literally on the count 1 but in the 32nd note of the count 1. To understand better my point. Subdivide the sixteenth note(1e&a) into eight 32nd notes. Lets say this is the representation of the eight 32nd notes: 12345678 (1 is 1. 3 is E. 5 is &. 7 is A. (1E&A))
      The 32nd note kick is place in 2.
      The tempo is I think at 90-94 bpm which is also fast and that does the trick into kind of a rushed or dragged groove.

    This has got to the wildest drum grooving I have ever seen. What makes it so wild to me is that the reference point of time seems to morph like mid-phrase or mid-section or something. It’s as if Christopher Nolan made the movie Tenet into a drum groove.

But in terms of groove strictly speaking I wouldn’t put him above or even in the same category as the all-time groove legends like Steve Jordan, Gaad, JJ Johnson. Needless to say though I agree with you 1000% on most drummers today needing more focus on groove

    For those wondering I experimented with some midi drums and was able to notate it.
    numbers = quintuplet subdivisions 0 = kick S = snare x = hi hat x/x = time signature
    [ 12345 12345 12345 123456 *repeat*
    21/20[ x x x x
    [ 0 S
    If you try to count it in 4/4 you will find it almost works but the groove is extended a little bit. That extension is 1 quintuplet
    *edit* Thats only the first groove

    Some of my favorite producers will have a beat they created play in between tracks on their albums, namely Pete Rock, dj premier, and quest love. It's a nice transition, especially if the two tracks have a different feel or flow. This beat right here reminds me of that. Sounds like something quest love would throw in between tracks on a roots album. Very nice.

    The reason he is moving like that is cause he is trying to feel that swing in the beat while saying in time. When keeping time has been drilled into you so much that it literally becomes muscle memory to do so, playing ''offbeat'' is like holding your breath underwater, while trying to fight the urge to come up for air. It is NOT in reverse, or sped up.

    Need more please. First part sounds like quintuplets- kick on 1, snare on 3. It’s not just “a feel thing”. That shit is mathematical af. Incredible.

    Reversed the vid (though visuals didn't translate), for anyone thinking this video is in reverse.
    Definitely isn't - in reverse it sounds weird but still pretty cool.
    I've uploaded the vid on my channel, don't think I can link it in youtube comments?
