    It's amazing how pretty much everything that brought down the Star League could have been avoided if they'd left alone the people who just wanted to be left alone.

      Subjugating the periphery definitely came back to haunt them but it was a dysfunctional system that would have come undone at some point down the line regardless in my mind. Too many people pulling different directions and not working together.

    It's interesting how literally everything Amaris tries goes his way up until he completes Operation Apotheosis, and then literally nothing goes his way again.

    • @EmperorPylades
      @EmperorPylades ปีที่แล้ว

      An example of "and now what?" at play. Generations of House Amaris had planned and laid the groundwork for the coup, but nobody had plans for what they'd do afterwards. And they really didn't have a plan for fighting an angry Russian in charge of the SLDF.

      Not exactly. There were a few cases where things didn't go exactly to plan (the headhunter squads, for example), but they were relatively minor components of the plan where their failure could be compensated for, or still succeeded in achieving a secondary objective. The problem is that the final stages of his plan relied on everything going perfectly...and this is where it fell apart, because of one, critical thing that Amaris didn't account for:
      Kerensky said "No."

    The fact that Richard was mellowing because of his wife and - especially - his daughter both hilights how responsibility - and especially children - can bring out the best in us, and also makes what happens next that much more gut wrenching

    • @SvenVanDerPlank
      @SvenVanDerPlank  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I tried to humanise Richard in this series because his story is tragic and I feel people assign too much blame to him. So many of his bad decisions that give him his reputation were encouraged by Amaris. I also felt a tragic sense of loneliness in his story; that he suspected something was deeply wrong but despite being the most powerful man in existence (in theory) has noone he trusts to turn to for help.

    • @foenrik8941
      @foenrik8941 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It also makes one wonder what could've been, had anyone else taken the time or cared enough to try mentoring him, be it Kerensky finding the time, be it one of the more principled House Lords like Michael Steiner II (who mentored Kerensky) or John Davion, or even one of the other Periphery leaders. While I have no doubt the latter would exploit him much as Amaris had, I don't think any of them wanted to subvert or burn it all down as he did.

    My friends and I were among the earliest Battletech fans. Getting into the Board Game shortly after the change from 'Battledroids' (and thank goodness for THAT forced change!). When the 'Mechwarrior' RPG came out, we all, already being big RPG fans, devoured the game. Combining it, the Battletech Board Game & the sadly-neglected Aerotech game, as tools for a massive Campaign that went on for years.
    The Greatest 'War' we had was a Mech/Aerotech fighter engagement that consisted of THIRTY-SIX Mechs on a side, not even counting Armor & Fighter units. The first MOVEMENT phase took over Two Hours to complete & the engagement in its entirety took weeks.
    When the House History & Star League History books were released, i dove into them all & they were the first history books I actually read, cover-to-cover. I am so glad to see a younger generation develop the same kind of passion for the universe that my friends & I first had, so long ago.

    Hello Sven.
    I have watched each and every Battletech video you have done so far. Often, I have found out things that I only barely knew of, or facts that were presented in a manner I had never contemplated. On top of that, your videos are extensive and detailed. Almost too much so for the 'average' player. But, I may be a bit hard upon them, since I am one of those 'grey warriors'. Those guys that have been playing the game since the original first production issue of the boxed sets. A person that has played literally thousands of games upon the tabletops, and one that has used that experience to create a highly detailed account of his personal Mercenary Unit.
    I am liking how you are using persons in the online community to voice over some of the facts and details you cover in your videos. I do wish, though, that you could get Tex to do more (grins widely). On this topic, might I suggest that you reach out to Baradul, aka: Molten Metal? He has a fine voice. If you don't believe me, check out the 3rd installment of 'Hired Steel'. Baradul has the speaking role for the Rifleman's Pilot. I believe that he appears in the 3rd video, but it is listed as Episode Two, due to their being an introductory episode.

We'll see who we can get in future episodes but understandably everyone is busy with their own projects. It's fantastic that they're willing to share what little free time they've got. Hopefully we can continue to include more guests/cameos throughout the rest of the series.

    The politics of this universe are insane, I'll admit, at first I was rooting for the Star League, unifying everyone and bringing peace, however, just as life in our universe, a few bad apples ruin the bunch.
    Now learning all the back room politics the leaders of the Star League was taking part in just ruins my view on them.
    In my current playthrough on MW5, I started with Marik, then moved over to start helping the Taurians.
    I can't help it, but I'm a sucker for independence, but the nuke attack with the civilian truck was.. aggressive to say the least.
    Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess.. still scary.
    I love this channel. I've been watching it for 3 days now and has turned me into a die hard fan.
    I'm looking forward to learning more about the clans. I remember playing Mech Assault on Xbox, and I've been waiting to see where those Blake weirdos tie in.

    First the excesses of Amos Forlough in the Reunification War, now mass casualties caused by frustrated SLDF troops.

    • @SvenVanDerPlank
      @SvenVanDerPlank  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, it's miraculous they can survive at all in the militant world they inhabit. They did at least get enormous funding from the Star League to expand, but you can see from the map that they tried their best to get away from the madness behind them. Unfortunately those colonies weren't yet self-sufficient by the time of the collapse.

    • @MoreEvilThanYahweh
      @MoreEvilThanYahweh ปีที่แล้ว

      The post-Star League Outworlds also have themselves to blame to some degree. Their ruling council/legislative body requires a unanimous vote to get anything big done and their Space Amish have seats, so they ensure nothing gets done and worlds die/starve from tech/industrial decline.
      Any rational/realistic state would at the very least have taken away their seat at the table or removed the unanimous vote requirement after centuries of self-sabotage. The Omniss are pacifist luddites, it's not like they could march their horse-drawn wagons and pitchforks mobs interstellar distances to Alpheratz and lynch the government.

      @SvenVanDerPlank  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No it's set on Galatea circa 3014 where the technology rejecting population that controls the planets food supply decides to break away from the Lyran Commonwealth. It describes how this group of people (essentially space-Amish) fight against the technologically advanced Commonwealth. I found it interesting because of its discussion of religion, the part it plays in the conflict and how the characters deal with the fact that a shared belief has led them to two very different world views. Wasn't the best BT book I've read by any means but was enjoyable enough.
