Having a lot of fun in the DCS World War 2 theaters these days, don't really know a whole lot of world war 2 aircraft and their capabilities so I'm thinking of doing a lot more videos like this so I can learn new stuff and tactics, Let me know if you guys have any tips thank you for watching and all your support.

If you have time before the merge, best to do a G warm up (4-6 G for 90 degrees, and 4-6 G for 90 degrees the other way). This will give about an extra G for G-onset effects. Thanks!

If I'm correct, there were 30-something Hurricane Squadrons and 19 Spitfire squadrons present during the Battle of Britain. I think the P-40C used by the RAF were also present, but I'm not sure.
Update: P-40Cs were not used in the Battle of Britain, but saw service in Egypt.
@@lonniebailey4989 I wrote a dissertation on the BoB. Hurricanes ended up accounting for more British/commonwealth/exile kills than any other airframe across all theatres.

Well, the Battle of Britain. Less so after that.
After years of watching DCS from a distance I’ve finally ordered my hotas and TrackIR and am taking the leap. Definitely starting off with WW2 warbirds. I must say this is the best dogfighting content I’ve found on youtube. One can actually learn tactics through your replays and the video production is very clean. Keep up the great work!
I appreciate that the wings don’t just automatically and cleanly fall off in the warbirds like they do in the jets when they get hit. It’s a nice damage model in that respect 👍🏼

This new map looks fantastic and thank you for your new video and stated intent of doing much more WWII content. I'll be glued to my screen! Hopefully, rather than random encounters, you'll be find the cream of 'Experten' to go against to make these challenges as interesting as possible. Good luck!
3:34 What you did reminded me of a WWII story I heard. A heavily damaged B-17 Bomber was headed back to Britain when a Bf-109 spotted him. The B-17 believed they were gonna get shot down, but the 109 spared the B-17 and flew alongside it until they reached the English Channel. If I remember correctly, the 109 tried to shoot it down but then run out of ammo before he could kill the B-17 and spared him.
I think it was because his wing commander told them not to shoot at pilots who had bailed. He saw how much of a beating it had taken and it clearly couldn't defend itself and was barely flyable. He escorted them so as to dissuade flak from shooting at them.

100% Agree. The FW 190 was something nasty, and would love to see the Spitfire take it on. I also like seeing Longshot in the videos, so maybe put him in the FW 190?
Good vid - more of these pls! I like that WWII hits seem generally less lethal with damage much more dependant on armaments and aircraft design.

Nice to see the premiere Spitfire Mark 9 doing battle.
It really was the best of the Spits, later models were faster and more heavily armed but the 9 still had the lightweight elegance of the original but with many of the shortcomings of the earlier marks resolved. Great fights Growly, thanks for posting...ps I like the red arrow appearing especially when the opposition fighter is hard to see against the ground cover.

I feel like seing nothing in front of the nose when you gotta pull lead, kinda frustrating expecting the bandit to pop out and realizing he has rolled and gone under the engine.

A lot of mistakes made by the K4 player. At the first merge he should've zoomed like hammerhead on you. For sure you wouldnt catched him if he zoomed climb and pulled a hammerhead on you. And there he can now start energy trapped you. But luckily this 109 always tries to turn with you which was a very big mistake. Btw nice fight there btw. Love it

They do have the Tempest (I watched a video tonight). Some Mosquito variant would be interesting. Do they do four engine bombers? I recall, 15-20 years ago, on a much more primitive simulator, some people re-fighting the Battle of Trafalgar using (IIRC) B-17s or B-25s. "Sea Level" was 1000 feet. So you had two columns of "Royal Navy" bombers approaching the French and Spanish line of bombers, all flying straight and level. Anyone sustaining enough damage to lose altitude was "sunk". In the real Battle of Trafalgar damaged ships got boarded and taken as prizes, I don't think they tried to simulate that part of it!
I spent hours playing the IL-2 series games comparing aircraft performance. It was always fun beating a Bf-110 in a P-40M ;-D
There was an option on the Spitfire IX to have Browning .50 calibre machine guns along with the 20mm Hispano-Suizas. That was some hard-hitting Spit.

Now, in most videos on TH-cam you see guys in Spitfires shooting down 109s with ease, so I would be very interested to see how you, Growling Sidewinder, would fight the fight the 109 wants to fight to beat the Spit...

I think the first burst would cripple much more than just the radiator, being basically a side-shot: pilot, instruments, and maybe even the injection system (between the cockpit and the engine slightly above and to the rear).

It’s not necessarily that the Spit could outturn the Bf 109, but that in a really tight turn, the 109 could snap into a stall without warning, or the wings might come off. The Spitfire had a subtle wash-out in the wings, so that the wingtips stalled before the rest of the wing, and the joystick would start vibrating to warn of this, as the wings vibrated with the partial stall. In the modern world, we have stick shakers for the exact same purpose. The Spitfire pilot knew exactly how tightly his aircraft could turn, because the plane would warn him. The 109 pilot might not want to risk it. That’s why they tempted Allied pilots into power fights, and Spitfire pilots would try to change it into a turning fight.

A spit vs a mustang would be nice.
I think he's only keeping it between Allied vs Axis, but a Mustang has significant advantages over the Spitfire.

I took it down after it came to light that he lied about being a pilot, and was charging people on patron for lessons under the assumption that he was a real pilot. I didnt want to promote that kind of shit or show any kind of support for that kind of behavior.

Can I have some help with my sim, I startup my game and when I click multiplayer the list is completely empty. I have tried reinstalling my game multiple times and tried steam and the regular version. The list is still empty though. I just want to get back to playing with my friends.

Because of your videos I'm spending all the money I have and will have until the rtx3090 comes out on a custom rig to power this game in VR.
Early in the war at least, BoB, the two basic defensive moves were British fighters turn hard, and Germans in the 109 to dive away and run.
I think the 109 had a higher ceiling than the Spit or Hurricane and generally had an easier time changing altitudes, supercharging and fuel injection does that.
From what I've read though, many pilots on both sides felt they had superior aircraft, some felt that the differences were only marginal and that it came down to the situation opening the fight and tactics in general.
At low alts like these its really no contest for the LF spit, LF stands for low flight, meaning it was tuned for operations under 5000 meters. Bellow that threshold the LF spit has better climb, accel, turn, e-retention, etc. As I said, its really no contest for the LF compared to the K4 at low alt, the K4 was designed primarily for high alt engagements.

Just wondering about engine management - appreciate this is an older video - it sounds like your engine hardly changes tone at all during that first engagement up to 1:48 - do you tend to leave the engine at pretty much 1 pair of RPM/Boost settings, and then just watch airspeed? or are you adjusting throttle/rpm loads?

I immediately thought of that one scene from the movie Red Tails, where the Me-262s ambush the Allied bomber formation, but then the Red Tails found out their Mustang has less turning radius than the 262 and used it.
Yeah WW2 is a lot of fun, more than modern jets (including the f14) for me. But can you do a dogfight in a Viggen?
One thing I can't understand with my Spitfire is the when the Bf-109 or Fw-190 zoom climbs and I follow, my radiator starts smoking. I assume it's because I enhanced the realism and need to open the cowling to cool down the engine.
A Spit and Bf 109 merge at equal energy levels gives the Spit a great advantage, even against a Bf-109K4.

Not really, the 262 ouspeeds the tempest by about 400kmh, Its a far superior aircraft and the only way the tempest could ever win the fight is If the 262 tried to turn with it.

Ouch, it really hurts to see how those pilots used their 109s, turning with a spit towards the ground, that is not a good idea.
He really had no choice. At those alts the LF has better climb and e retention than the k4.
That happens online. People try to make you chase them up and blow your engine.

I see that you and your enemy use a lot of tactics you would use in jets - but with WW2 aircraft keeping the energy, bringing the fight to a optimal altitude or use your energy to stall him out (flap usage and constantly adjusting things like the radiator is really important) all these things are ecspecially important for the K4 since it would defenetly loose a "classic" dogfight. I know it's a bit difficult to adapt these techniques since some of them qould basically be a death sentence if you use them in a modern aerial combat scenario, but you're a great pilot so I'm shure you'll get used to it quite fast☺.
