On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

Shooting a Fox 2 from your 4th gen fighter at a WWII era opponent because you can’t gun him is the DCS equivalent of rage-quitting IMO.
Facts!
I don't know (since I don't play DCS) but it seems odd to me why any modern fighter jet would constantly stay within visual range and thus allowing him situational awareness? Just pull out, use the radar and then attack from unexpected angles.
So, I suppose, these are some "gentlemen's rules" in DCS.
In real physics, a Eurofighter might even just use a supersonic bypass to get him into trouble.

I mean _of course_ they're not going to use missiles in these fights by default, WW2 aircraft don't even have flares or anything, only thing they could use is the terrain... _Homing rockets_ were pretty much the equivalent of sci-fi.

Would love to see P-38 and A-10 fight. P-38 doesn’t have conversion aiming(like wing mounted guns). Both are close air support. It would be a great fight

When you pulled that move in the vertical where ypu cut your engine: I have to imagine having a prop is advantageous in an unseen way as well. Literally, unseen. When chasing down another jet, you can clearly see how much throttle is being input by the jets, whereas a prop is always spinning faster than your eye can keep track of, ergo there's no way he can know you've reduced to idle and is about to fly on by.
Wouldn't you be able to tell by airbrakes/ flaps getting deployed, though?
@hurricaneace143 He's probably already using combat flaps, and because of the inherent disparity in thrust, the need for airbrakes to get that extra advantage seems unnecessary. I doubt he even used em.

Interesting that the Spitfire all in all does better against the Eurofighter than the Bf109K. But I think the difference is not in the manoeuvring but in the amount of led you can put into a burst. The 109K still only has one 20mm and 2x 30cal while the Spitfire has 2x 20mm and 4x 30cal. Even if the 109K holds a 30mm doesn't make a difference because the damage model obviously hasn't been adjusted for ww2 vs modern jetfighter dogfights.
Several 27mm shells from the Eurofighter didn't make a lot of difference when it actually would rip the Spitfire tail off.
Two things: the 109K should have two 13mms as well as the motorkanone, as well as not all 20mm cannons being made equal. The main difference (as I would imagine) would be that the Hispano mk2s mounted on the spitfire have a much higher muzzle velocity than the MG151/20 on the bf109 (and almost double the velocity of the 30mm MK103) This means that the spitfire does not need to pull as much lead, and so has a much easier time aiming.

WWII fighters did not actually need to use tracers to walk their fire onto target. At least in the 56th FG they used them to indicate low ammunition with the last few hundred rounds being all tracer. Source Thunderbolt! by Robert Johnson
That's a matter of preference rather than doctrine. I'd imagine pilots had more leeway with their equipment back when planes didn't cost the entire GDP of a country.

Interesting fact - Due to the Spitfire’s incredible BFM performance, German Eurofighters avoided the merge at all costs. There are literally no confirmed reports of a Spitfire scoring a kill on a Eurofighter during WWII! 🤔
Also, the Eurofighter was the most useless aircraft of WWII as it did not score a single kill.

I believe the rear area of the Spitfire is mostly hollow space so the rounds probably just passed straight through.
In those older planes, most of the plane aft of the cockpit is empty. Not so in newer aircraft.
Noticed the same with the fight against the -109.
It literally took at minimum over a halfdozen rounds and just kept flying.
The other advantage that the Spitfire, Bf-109 and Mustang also have is just how much smaller overall they are compared to modern fighters. That small size makes for a very hard target to hit .
That’s the first time I’ve heard of a small size being an advantage.
They are not that smaller than a ef or an f-16

Typhoon 16x11m with 51 sqm wing area.
And while the Spitfire is a cross, the Typhoon is a triangle, ie a FAR easier target to aim at.
However, even more importantly is the difference in WEIGHT. Spitfire empty is 2.3t. MTOW just over 3t.
Typhoon empty is 11t. Normal takeoff weight, around 16t.
5 times more weight exerting inertia against merely 2.5 times more wing area.

The Mk IX had the biggest "advantage" over it's opponents when it came out of all the Marks according to Sqn Ldr Johnny Johnson. So I can understand its popularity. I would, however, like to see if the Mk 24 with its much heavier armament would put up a better show against the Eurofighter.
@@dscott6629 Mk VIII was the definitive Merlin Spit, but it took too long to develop so the stopgap Mk IX got built in much greater numbers.

Actually the Mk.VIII was the pilots' choice, but all of them went to overseas, MTO, CBI, PTO. It was a more advanced variant, inspite of the very similar look (from outside the retractable tailwheel was the biggest visual difference).

This isn't so crazy.. Back in 1963 a Spitfire MkX1X took on a English Electric Lightning Mach 2 fighter in trials to see how the jet would fair against a piston engine fighter, due to a confrontation going on in Indonesia, who were using P51 Mustangs at the time. An aircraft similar in performance.

Spitfire Mk 9 is great turnfighter, late Griffon variants would've perform similiar to 109 K-4, every plane evolved into somewhat of energy boom-zoom figher towards the end of the war ;)

Using the fox 2 was very poor form.
The Spitfire’s 20mm Hispanos have very good ballistics (larger propellant charge/smaller explosive charge) than the German cannons.
Plus depending on the Spitfire version, the cannon are supplemented by either .303 (early) or .50 (later) machine guns.

Low V0 cannons like the Mk-108 had poor ballistics, but that had nothing to do with using mineshells and everything to do with being low velocity cannons.
They had worse LONG RANGE ballistics, but who cares? Noone used them at such ranges anyway.

That, is NOT an advantage. There's damn good reason why the Germans switched to mineshells as much as they did. Because they were found to be 2-4 times as effective.
And the Bk-27 on the Typhoon has MUCH higher V0 anyway, so it has better ballistics compared to the Spitfire for any range within which they will shoot.

@DIREWOLFx75 Also, having better ballistics is absolutely an advantage since it makes it easier to hit the target. It just wasn't an advantage that was valued in ww2, and mineshells were used since even if only the occasional one hit they'd do large amounts of damage to enemy planes.
It's amazing how GS always gets these guys to fight his fight. I wish I could see some of these fights from the other point of view with the other pilot talking through his thinking.
