I bet you remember two old secrets from the late 70’s…..the Tarantula Spinnerbait, and the old H&H Touchdown worm!! I still have some Tarantulas that I have tied new skirts onto, thin, wide strand living rubber!!! I’ll sell a couple, $500 each! Lol. Great vid, Randy!
Great points Randy. I’ll implement them since I have never gotten a bite on the lure. As far as the train noise, I find the train sound soothing and a train sound means GNP is headed to a distribution center.
They still work good for me, I actually moved back to them since I like it better than the choppo. Tool in the toolbox, just have to know when to use them, but still as effective.
A swivel on the split ring will save you a ton of frustration. Anyone who has been reeling a whopper plopper, got something snagged on the front hook, and watched the body turn instead of the tail while twisting the heck out of your line will tell you, add a swivel.
@@gitz-zum unless i'm misunderstanding you, I think we're doing the same thing. Bait, split ring, swivel, main line. All of my ploppers are set up with a swivel already hooked to the bait . I grab one out of the box, tie directly to the swivel and start casting.
I use The Whopper Plopper in White and Loon color. Last fall the Largies almost straightened the split ring's that hold the very sharp hooks on. Most were over 2 pounds. The bass hit hard and fought harder. People beef up your split rings. Put a swivel on the front. I use the 90 size. Maybe I should move up to 110 size. But, Waiting for the top water hit is awesome! Braid 30# is the best line. Shawn.
I was fishing the whopper plopped before dahlberg released it to the public. It was a sad and happy day when this happened because I new I didn’t have to make them anymore but now everyone was going to use them.
The hooks used to be an issue with the WP’s, but the last 3 or 4 years River 2 Sea has really upgraded the hooks. Same for the Berkley Choppo. I threw a Choppp this morning and got hit first cast. They are one of the most fun lures to throw In Summer and Fall. I have a pond I fish that has never had a WP or Choppo fished in it. I will be changing that in a couple weeks. It should be fun.
I caught my pb on a loon colored wp(5.01) in a creek. A few ppl are trying to get me to switch to the choppo. I have bought the Ozark Trail version, but haven't seen any results yet.
Still love the whopper plopper! I recently moved to Boise, Idaho from California. Started throwing the plopper and caught the biggest bass I’ve caught in Idaho so far.
Those G finesse hooks may as well be barbless. Bought a few packs in different sizes after watching one of your jerkbait videos and man was I shocked at how tiny the barb is. They’ve been collecting dust in the garage until I need barbless hooks for trout fishing.
I’ll ask again, will you cover the podcast from BTL with Jacob Wheeler. He covered many interesting topics that I’m very interested in and I’d love to hear your opinion. Thanks, Randy!
I wonder about it until I tried it for myself. We've been catching a ton of pike and bass, both large and small mouth, on them. We've caught more fish this year than we have in the past few years here. Including some of the biggest fish in all my years fishing. It's been our go-to lure this year spring / early summer.
The beginning of this video is *precisely* why there’s some information I keep for myself and close friends/family…patterns, mods, baits, etc. I think that sharing information is VITAL for about 99% of stuff because it helps people, contributes to the evolution of the game and makes life a lot easier when it comes to needless difficulty. But there are a few things I keep under wraps. There are a couple of “money” zoom colors that are somewhat difficult to find and they would become even tougher if guys were rumbling over them on eBay, etc. The WP is an extreme example of that because it’s very difficult to keep a large, buzz bait style plug under wraps, especially in a tournament scenario…but this stuff does happen. It’s tough to overstate the value in occasionally throwing a bait/presentation that the fish have just *never* seen.
I carry dental floss when I know I’m going to fish it. Works great for getting those tiny pieces of debris out of the rotating joint that cause it to stick and the whole lure to spin. For what it’s worth….
I found a whopper few days ago put new paint hooks I've been catching the snot out of the bass it's the 75 size other guys tell me it's the best size ,seems to be pretty awesome!
Wish a bait company would come out with a buzz frog with the same type of tail with the wire but a double smaller paddle tail than on the whopper plopper , make a double tail hard body frog or a hollow belly if they could , they have one right now but it does not work properly by Lunkerhunt
@@davidmeyer9648 think I have every known material to tie to a hook in my arsenal. Good lort! I gotta stop working 7-days a week and start painting some baits! Randy, just curious…..and not asking you to give it up…..but do you have any secret baits or techniques in your arsenal that you think are as big of a deal as the whopper plopper or the A rig?
@@randyblaukatintuitive love it!! I think it would make for a great video to talk about a bunch of the secret baits that finally made it out into the open in bass fishing. Way back to the days of people renting weighted stickbaits at Table Rock. I remember when the shad rap came out…..couldn’t find them anywhere. Later, I remember when the Manns minus 1 got out in the open. Wow! What a bait! Whopper plopper/a rig……dropshot to some extent. It would be neat to have a video that is essentially a timeline of when these “secret” techniques got out.
@@randyblaukatintuitive I have heard of using straight floro because the bait is moving so fast the line doesn’t get a chance to sink it. 95%+ of my setups are straight floro
I love making baits , I don't sell them I don't fish tournaments and I am Subscribed to the channel and Extras. Drill a hole or series of holes in your tail for great Bubble Action...
Upgrade your Hooks to inline circles. Hardly ever a need to use trebels. Pinch your barbs unless you've never fished before or are fishing for money and aren't capable of applying continuous pressure. And for God sakes don't use "50lb" braid. Hardly ever a need for more than 15lb.
Never caught on one of those bigger ones like in the video but I've caught a crap ton on the river to sea that's half that one's size and in the black and yellow. Last one was 6 and a half pounds.
Does anyone have an opinion on the Whopper Plopper vs the Googan Revolver? I have a Revolver but haven't tried a Whopper Plopper. Nothing has gone for the Googan version for me yet, but it has caught fish on video including in the saltwater.
Everything Googan is more about marketing than the lure itself. Not even saying they're bad baits, but they're designed & marketed to catch young fishermen moreso than fish.

You guys should probably shrink tube the back hook so it's straight back. Makes a big difference for muskie fishing on the original 8in Plopper.

I'll try that because I can't keep the 130 size from rolling over

I run a swivel but from my main line

I love the plopper. From the 65 to 190 ive caught good fish on them all. Ive caught everything from eel to stripers
What size hooks should you use on a plopper 90?

David Dudley had a really good video many years ago about how to put a rubber shrink tube on the back hook shank
So funny hearing you say to throw 40lb braid. I throw it on 6lb in my local creek. Maryland guys lol
LOL! Me too. The heaviest line that I use in Michigan is 10 pound. Usually I'm at 6 or 8.

The smaller models come with Gamakatsu EWG style hooks, at least the newer ones do. Really enjoy mine

The biggest size still gets a lot of love where fish eat BIG top water lures in my recent experience
Side note the g finesse trebles are the best top water hooks absolutely killer. They hook up on the softest bites
Randy thx for all the educational videos
Would you consider a video about night fishing? Conditions, moon phase, lures ? Thx
Still love the whopper plopper! I recently moved to Boise, Idaho from California. Started throwing the plopper and caught the biggest bass I’ve caught in Idaho so far.
Also like you said about bass feeding at night; I caught my fish right at twilight/night that last little bit of light. 🙌🏼
I throw a similar lure but something different that is my #1 confidence bait and catches me more fish than anything else! Love this time of year
still catch lots of fish where i am at. and if its kept to big of a secret they do not sell and they get discontinued.

Caught a few bass on whooper plooper, but they really shine on northern pike in spring.
I'm placing the Whopper Plopper in the category of over rated baits.

Hard for me to get you southern or mid south fisherman refer to all panfish as perch. As a northern fisher I always think of yellow perch.😵💫
I was thinking the same thing. I live in Wisconsin and yellow perch is exactly what comes to mind for me.
Does anyone go to a stiffer rod for the 130 size?
They still catch a lot of fish around here, hardly anyone uses them locally 😊
