- A new Client approached me to remove an old hedge! As she explained that they had recently bought a house and decided to remove an old overgrown hedge, but something went wrong and realizing that there was actually a lot more work than they thought, they decided to ask for my help.
When I arrived with my assistant on site, I realized that I underestimated the work on the photogoraphy that I was sent and to tell the truth I decided to refuse this work, because the customer asked to remove the hedge together with the root and I thought that we can cope with the help of hand tools, so I did not even began to take a stump cutter, which I recently bought.
When I said I wasn't ready to do the job as the Homeowner wanted, she asked me to at least try to do something, then I said we would try to do something, but if we couldn't dig up the hedge from the root, we would cut it down to ground level. We started by cutting off any extra branches and anything else that might get in our way, then using shovels and pickaxes we started digging out the hedge trunks and we were very lucky that I had a chain winch in my car, which I carry with me for this kind of work. But I only had a Stihl cordless chainsaw with me, which is not designed for cutting large trunks, so this made the work very difficult. I was very lucky that the waste recycling dump was very close, so I took everything out very quickly and it didn’t take much time. We still managed to remove several trunks of the hedge by the roots, but we simply cut down the thicker ones, however, when the Mistress arrived, she was very surprised that we had managed to complete this task.
All this work took us almost 10 hours and when I arrived home completely tired, I told my wife that it was 10 HOURS IN HELL! - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

A reciprocating saw with a long blade works great if you want to avoid manually chopping roots. Great idea to use those ratchet straps.

Спасибо Вам, да это было действительно не легко, нам пришлось спилить другие деревья, так как корни были очень большими и мы бы просто не осилили их выкопать!

I'm not sure how much use a bobcat would have been but a mini digger would have been tremendously helpful. Maybe they decided putting in a day's worth of back-breaking labour was more cost-efficient than hiring a digger, not sure.

Would it not be cheaper for the client to rent an excavator for one day?
Thanks for the comment. The excavator was not suitable for this job as we could damage the formwork of stones, as they are already in a poor state, but I think in time it will be radically replaced!
And then the customer would have to pay for the repairs to the road. That would definitely be much more expensive. In addition, the work of the two men is much more environmentally friendly and does not disturb the neighborhood with unnecessary noise and air pollution.😎
Or a stump grinder would have been sufficient. Perhaps the hedges could have been pulled out with a tractor but not everyone has access to one especially in the town or city.

Get a roto-hammer with a spade bit. Mine's a Bosch. You'll be able to power through the toughest root balls and clay soil without ruining your body. I use mine all the time, because I'm too old to do anything like the work that you did there.

Great job boys. That's a lot of work. Need a gasoline chainsaw, carry a couple of sets of sharp chains, and a real sharp axe 🪓.
Absolutely right, just by the photo that the customer sent me I could not estimate the full scope of work and did not take a large chainsaw, I had only a cordless saw in the car, which is not very suitable for cutting thick tree trunks.

Hi George Of Eden. U guys are working very hard at this and I do know that u will come up with a great finish. BUT if it was my call I would ask u to give everywhere a major clean-up. Cut and trim all the branches but leave the trunks to regenerate new green all at the same time for a neat uniform look. It's a nice property in a corner but one do need a little privacy.
