Wowee Tyler! I've watched my fair share of Live YT Q&A sessions and yours was the most intimate and informative of ANY! I started watching before the technical difficulties and once you were on a roll my 2 grandchildren woke up and I had to leave the live event for my babysitting gig.. Now alone again, wuth my much relieved cat, I am enjoying this recorded live episode very much. I respect your minimalist and frugal life style and your work ethic is pretty much off the charts. I too, live alone and prefer it. It is a true blessing no matter that I go to bed exhausted each night (happily). I'm 71yo and maintain a heavily forested 12 acre homestead mostly without help. Your homestead is spectacular and imo there is no better way to live! Freedom, bliss, living in the moment... Joy!

Hey kid, glad to meet you face to face. I'm so glad you've got this homestead and Dobby. Do what's good for you. You're building an awesome life for yourself. If you've got a roof over your head, a warm bed to sleep in, and food in your cupboard, you're ahead of a lot of people. I lived in BC for 25 years and loved the atmosphere but, it was far too expensive to be realistic as a comfortably financially affordable life. I moved back to the prairies where real estate is relatively affordable and adopted a few rescues (cats & dogs). Life is good. It will be for you as well. Edit: My old neighbour from when I grew up on a farm, has a underground storage room to keep her potatoes and root vegetables. She says when spring rolls around, the vegetables are still as pristine as when they were put in there during the fall. Just an fyi if you're looking for a way to store veg.

You ever come across an old farm windmill, the top of your hill seems to get consistent air flow that could produce electricity and pump water to house at least in 3 seasons. The stream could also produce electricity eventually.

I like your creek refrigeration. Maybe a couple 64 qt or 108 qt locking lid boxes from Home Depot would work. Weigh them down so somewhat submerged to keep contents cool. Lid locks on. Though a determined bear will get into anything.

I had an awesome time with you today! Just a suggestion bout refrigeration: 12 volt power cooler will bring the interior temperature down to -4 degrees C. Solar panels, battery is all you need, or maybe even a used/new RV refrigerator with 3 ways of powering

Oh my gosh. I'm sorry to know that you struggled with mental issues. I understand because I suffered from very bad anxiety and it took years to calm down. Stay strong !!
Without needing a good bit of electricity, your best way to preserve tons of apples will likely be drying them. (The way I grew up, by the way, sounds very similar to your background). They need to be cut thin and really, really dried well to have them last without molding. There are several low tech yet effective ways to do this en masse. When rehydrated, they’re pretty good and retain many nutrients you need in the winter. Storing them in a way to keep pests out is a big consideration, as well. Another consideration is digging/making a “fruit cellar”. My parents stored huge amounts (we also had an orchard) of apples-as well as potatoes and carrots and cabbage-in ours over the winter. You’ll need to research your area to see how deep it would need to be to maintain temp. If you can get enough power to do it, canning is great…but the equipment needed to do it can add up quickly. If you have access to good thrift stores, you could amass a huge pot, a pressure cooker, mason jars, etc. over a couple of years. Nearly everything can be figured out. Cider is great-but if not canned or frozen, it will become vinegar before you know it. Applesauce is delightful-but requires canning or freezing. Do you have access to a good library-preferably one with the ability to borrow from other libraries, as well? If so, look for Native American works telling of their preservation methods. Fascinating and effective and accessible to nearly any of us. Early settlers also developed practices that worked. Excited to hear how you progress with it all!

I love in a rural area too, been here since 1987 so most of my life. I have lived in the city for short periods in between but always end up back out on our holding. You get so used to it the long trips to get goods is well worth it. If I hear a motor of any kind I look out to see what's happening, that's what is so amazing, the lack of noise and the privacy.❤

I grew up going to NS for the summers and also to a small farm/homestead with an outhouse and no electricity. Absolutely LOVED it and have such cherished memories. Hoping to go back and visit it this summer in August. Fist time since before Covid. 🙌🙏👍

I realize that being vulnerable and sharing your thoughts both past and present is not easy but is one of the reasons why I love watching you because you are very real and down to earth. Post Covid, I seem to have challenges getting up and moving like I used to (my body fights it a lot and I feel quite a lot of pain afterwards, so I get demotivated), so you truly inspire me to get off my butt! LOL. Prior to Covid I was a very active person who hated gyms but loved to hike and do all things outdoors. Ironically, I have worked for years as a mental health counsellor so maybe one day I can inspire you back. Please keep sharing as it matters more than you know! :)
