"LONG LIFE" (Lyle Mays) for Solo Piano by Uwe Karcher

- This is my fourth project to translate an orchestral Lyle Mays composition into solo piano music (after "Close To Home", "August" and "Au Lait" - if you count "September 15th" too, it would be number 5 ). I couldn't resist bringing the piano sound in the mix in a expansive direction as a reminder of Lyle's original (which has various synth backings for the ultimate "space" sound). Today, after Lyle's untimely death, I wonder if the song title is a clue from Lyle that he knew about the possibility of leaving us early due to illness. Somehow it sounds like a requiem to me. Anyway, it was special for me to play it. Thanks Lyle! You are still very much missed ... BTW, the tune is (mainly) in a combined 5/4 - 7/4 meter (for your interest 😉)
here is my Metheny/Mays playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLTFdSA2EkOE0jfY7Z6B2qef23NvBAuR7L.html
Very beautiful music...but so sad... Bring me tears each time... I love Lyle Mays
I really admired Lyles music and his style ..I personally do not think he was of this World ..Not many people have such a gift and to be so in sync with there chosen instrument ....I Would have loved to heard The Late Great Dudley Moore play this He was one of the finest Jazz players of my time who should never have strayed from his God Given Talent as a pianist ..I miss you Lyle and Dud xxx
Without any doubts Uwe is the best in the world to transcribe with excellence the magic of Lyle Mays, Keith J and the rest. Long life to you Uwe. :)
Thanks so much, Eric! 🙏🏻
You did an outstanding version of "Close to home" som time ago. Your work on this is just as exellent. You bring out the subtle melancholy in much of Lyle's music so well; at the same time giving it your own personal touch. Just exellent. Making interpretations of Lyle's music is not easy; there are so many emotions and moods in his music, always combined with his unique sound, chords and way of playng. Maybe that's why I never get tired of listening to him; always something new to discover, always something to find in the depths. But again: you do interpretations, trancriptions and arrangements of his music so incredebly well.
Sunds like a requiem? I never thought of this tune that way while Lyle was alive, but... You are abselutly right. Thanks for giving me yet another perspective on this wonderful piece!
Thank you, mate! It' s always nice to meet people who listen carefully to music like this - a rare gift, i'm almost tempted to say... Anyway, thanks for your kind comment! 🙏🏻🎹
Just exquisitely beautiful. You conveyed the feeling of Lyle's transcendent music with wonderful respect, reverence, and sensitivity. Very nicely done, thank you.
Thank You Uwe for this
splendid redention.....with musicians like You , the Spirit of Lyle will remain for decades.... Thanxs for posting👍🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
Thank you for this. The music of Lyle Mays has always resonated with me. Now that he is gone it is up to the rest of us who play and appreciate music to keep it alive.
It is hard to even find the words to praise your work Uwe. As I have written you bring Lyle and Pat's music to the piano in its fullest form never ever sounding thin or anemic. I am so grateful as it gives me the opportunity to learn and play it as well. You are amazing Uwe! Many thanks to you. John
Making music is like painting pictures in sound...you've got to get the colours right. Your 'paintings' always hang on the walls of people's hearts, Uwe.
Dear Linda, thanks for your kind and beautiful lyrical comment 😊
Once, during a Pat Metheny Group concert, someone from the audience yelled -after a performance by Lyle Mays-: "As always, Lyle!..." I feel like yelling, "As always, Uwe! ..." :-)
too kind, Bryan - but really appreciated anyway 😁
Yep bryan you can listen to that immediately after lyle's solo in San Lorenzo live on the album "Travels".....
Beautifully realized version of a gorgeous composition. Well done!
No me canso de ver este video , gran trabajo , la mejor interpretacion de Long Life que pude observar hasta ahora en las redes , Like
OH MY GOD!! I haven't even listened yet and I'm soooo excited to see you pop up in my feed with this!! WOOOW!! I already know it's going to be incredible. Ok, I'm going to listen to it right now. (putting headphones on now.) - Ok, I just finished listening and I am standing at applause! This magnificent!! As you have managed to conceal the hard work you have put into this, I know that it was a labor of love and capturing the original feeling without the synthesizers, you did a wonderful job. When this CD was released I actually ended up counting through the piece several times, and can't remember exactly what I was counting, but did get 22 or 5 and 7 and I forgive myself for not remembering. But...just thank you, this is amazing!
thank you, Boirle 😊 Your story sounds similar to what happened to me when I listened to the CD the first time. I would like to mention "Let Me Count The Ways", too - another incredible tune on that CD (which I will perform here one day for sure 😉)
Haven’t forgotten about you. Since guess you’ve been back from your Sweden (?) vacation for almost a month now.
Am in waiting room for doctor’s appointment in Little Rock, Ark USA. Am enjoying your “Long Life” which I opened after finding on a TH-cam notification. Thanks !
Lyle's life was unfortunately not a long life. Thanks for keeping his music alive. Very relaxing and reflective. Nice!!
Beautiful! 👏👏👏😲😮
Great interpretation, also the mix... the music of Lyle always breathes and to achieve this, is a goal by itself...
Bravo! Solo - 👍👏
Thank You so much Virtuoso Uwe....amazing tribute to Lyle...Gosh i would love a transcription Uwe?
Thank you, Scott! Concerning the transcription, just write to: uver@gmx.net for more info...
Very ambitious and beautiful!
It’s a piece I know so well. Didn’t think you could pull it off…but you did!
Very very very beautiful ❤❤❤
Uwe more spectacular than ever! These notes carve us inside
Great work, Uwe! Thank you so much! Keep doing what you're doing! What a tremendous loss not to have Lyle with us anymore!
I love this whole album. But this is easily my favorite track.
Oustanting. The way you play this track dispite having an istrument incapable to hold the original looooong notes is outstandig.
As always, target hit in full ! And Lyle is smiling.
Those undulating high notes took my breath away. Long live gorgeous piano players.
Just a word : splendide ! un bel hommge à Lyle Mays ...
WOW!! AMAZING!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR BEAUTIFUL MELODIES!
Ganz wundervoll.
What a beautiful song
This is incredible Uwe. I already sent you an e-mail for the transcription. Was yearning for another song to play and happy that I found this. I am also going to listen to May's album which I haven't before so thank you for that as well! I can't wait to play it! Another outstanding transcription. I'm still playing Paint My Heart Red and Part VIII by Keith. Always grateful to have those pieces to play. And as I write this I am listening to you play this song; truly timeless.
Meravigliosa interpretazione💯‼️‼️
So many thanks to you Uwe Who perpetuates the so wonderful melodies and harmonies of Lyle, that's a huge work as always you do perfectly, Thanks for this moment of eternity :-)
Good to see that Lyle is still with us!
😁🙏🏻
Great playing / Great choice
Wonderful, Uwe. Hadn't heard this one before, but I love your "Close to Home', and was thrilled to hear this one.
fabulous and a beautiful tribute
Espectacular , Like
Well done Uwe a Masterpiece as original! 😉😉😉
Brilliant!
I like it and i love your music🎶
Another classy works of yours. It's very hard to put in words.

Really beautyful. You are great pianist. One Day I would like to hear your life concert.
Thank you, Grzegorz! Concerning live concerts, I stopped 16 years ago. But it' s not impossible, I guess. Now, in these Corona times I realized again how precious live events are...
A ticket for me too, please!

Yes - your Piano sounds really great on this one Ewe. You’ll have to go on tour soon!
thanks so much, John! But it is rather unlikely that I will go on tour again ... (Covid, private life etc)
nice🔥
Every Day (I thank you) Lyle! Every Day (I thank you) Uwe!
Alberto
Great tune. Not easy without the added deep string tones .. but nice job. Metheny and Mays was my Lennon and McCartney
Thankyou Uwe
Toll Uwe, Danke Dir für diese schöne Interpretation- irgendwann musst Du mir erklären, wie Du diesen unfassbaren Sound hinkriegst LG Detlef
Danke, Detlef!
What is the rhythm pattern of this particular number? I've listened to it many times, it's beautiful and captivating, but I can't quite put my finger on the pattern. Thanks for your response.
Simply stunning, I could make an evening of listening to you. Where do you call home? Perhaps I will make it out to see you play live.
Thanks, Tom! I' m living in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Wonderful and emotional. Looks like a hard piece to play.
Thank you, Duco!
In fact, the other Lyle tracks I recorded were more difficult to play (September 15th, Au Lait, Close To Home...)
@@ukaykeys That one is beautiful too but i could easily feel the time. This one is wicked. Keep em coming. Love your playing!
Impossible not to whistle the OB line on top... Thanks!!!!
Score as usual?
thanks, pal! 😁 Concerning the score, just drop a short mail for the details: uver@gmx.net
Great job! How can we download your music?
Thank you, Tom! Sorry, no downloads yet... 🙄

Can't find the words. "Bravo!" will have to suffice.
A great artist contributing to another great artist! What Yamaha piano is this? Also, do you record and then process with some FX (like reverb, etc)? If that's your room acoustics = unreal. Finally, R.I.P, Kyle and thanks, Uwe, for keeping his music in front of us.
Thanks, mate! Well, I´m playing a YAMAHA GA1 acoustic piano. I prefer a brilliant piano sound and asked the tuner to intonate my piano that way. So a piano sound is not so much a matter of size than a matter of intonation. I have searched very long to solve the problem of too much reverb in my records. The solution is to keep the piano lid closed with the mic inside fixed with tape under the lid (I use the Applied Microphone Technology M40, which is very good - Herbie Hancock is using it, too :-). The rest is traditional sound engineering (i should mention that I studied sound engineer before I studied classical piano; my studio equipment is pretty good meanwhile :-). The reverb is from Logic Pro X „Goldverb“. I also used the Logic Compressor & Exciter.
@@ukaykeys Thanks for the detailed info, Uwe! Appreciate knowing how you create such an amazing sound from this Yamaha. I'm sure your knowledge of sound engineering also helps, and agree on the use or over-use of reverb. A fine balance is hard to create. And your renditions of all of Lyle's music are even more amazing...you're so talented! I was lucky to see Kyle perform twice (with Pat Metheny) years ago, and later purchased an Oberheim 4-voice after hearing & loving his music. Keep up the good work and hope to hear more music from you on the Tube. I've listened to all of your work here, and really enjoy!
Are you going to make the transcript available?
Ciao Silvio - of course - it' s already available 😉
@@ukaykeys ok I write to you
Die Welt will andauern aufsteigen.
p.s. Du wirst immer unglaublicher...so viel Freude Du gibst
Das ist sehr nett - danke 🙏🏻😊🎹
