Selma, the grey cardigan is absolutely gorgious ! But I thought the button band could be as twice as big. The collar also. I love your podcast which always makes my day. Thank you
Hi 👋 I'm Marta living in Tallahassee Florida. Originally born in Puerto Rico but raised in New York from age three. Kate from Hawthorne cottage recommended your podcast. She was always mentioning her friend Selma. So I've binged watched all your episodes and I'm finally caught up. I've enjoyed every one Thanks for all the knitting tidbits. I'm a fairly new knitter. I've made lots of hats. I knit a Shawl for my sister and one for my older daughter. I knit 3 summer sweaters for my younger daughter. The sweaters were not what I would call a success but she wears them. I need to learn more about which yarns to use and how to choose the correct size. But I'm not giving up.
Your pronounciation of the German yarn - Prinzessin Tausendschön - is close to perfect 👏🏻 my respect for that and your lovely podcast. Also the song at the and is so heart warming ♥️
Thank you for another lovely knitty podcast. Your Elton cardigan is beautiful. The red wool looks so cosy. I also enjoyed the footage at the end. Take care 😊🧶🍁
I once read that the last 30 minutes of a project can “make it or break it”. A beautiful finish is everything and the way you wrap up each podcast with a smile, a visual, and music is like putting a bow on it. Thank you!
Thank you Selma for another great episode. My husband is originally from Fredericton, NB. Loved to see the old train bridge is being used as a walkway. Fantastic Victorian homes and so well maintained. Thanks so much for sharing.
I have just discovered your channel and have just begun watching Episode 56. I love your video, particularly enjoyed the beginning photography and music which set the scene for a day of knitting. Your voice is easy to listen to, and I appreciate the artful space behind you. As to the knitting, the Elton sweater and color looks gorgeous on you. I am more of a sock, hat, and cowl knitter, but am inspired by your knitting. Looking forward to watching more of your videos as I settle into my comfortable chair, a cup of tea, and my knitting project in my lap.
It is such a pleasure watching your podcast.I love your Elton Cardi. That blue grey is one of my favourite colours as well. I am also very inspired by your walking :-)

Your knitting works are gorgeous Selma, thank you for sharing it with all of us and for all the information about the yarns and knitters, they are truly helpful ! Your knitting are a inspiration to me , I just started learning how to knit and I always envision doing some gorgeous knitting pieces in the future just like you do. ! 😊💓
Thank you for an inspiring episode - I love watching all your projects, your book recommendationz and footage. New Brunswick looks beautiful and your Elton cardigan is very nice. Regards from Denmark 😊
Thank you for your podcast. I really enjoy seeing your knits and your Elton Cardigan is gorgeous.. I’ve added that to my list of future knits. Have a great week.
Lovely to see Fredericton through your eyes (lens) - thank you! We regularly visit family in Sackville and usually sightsee on the east coast but will definitely need to check out this lovely city as well. Thanks for that little sock recipe on Rav - so generous of you and am looking forward to trying it out.
I love love love your Elton cardigan colors! Last year I made the Rusty Cardigan (free on Ravelry) with plotulopi (unspun Icelandic) and wonder if that's a pattern you might look at with your Letlopi wool. It's a lovely pattern with colorwork only in the yoke. I'm MNLynn on Ravelry if you want to look at mine. I'm using Letlopi right now to make the Maja Cardigan by Helene Magnusson, so I'm familiar with that fiber. I'm using oatmeal, light beige, cream, light blue and darker blue instead of the pattern colors. I gravitate towards the grayish blue colors, too. My eyes are that color, and I think that's why I like them! On another note, I'm listening to The Book of Joy after you recommended it. Thank you for the soothing and thoughtful recommendation.
What a great example of self care you demonstrate with your trip. And knitting. 😊 I keep hearing about Passing and so put on my "Netflix radar". I've read a book some time ago that sounds like this but can't remember if it was in the 1920s. May have been. Thank you for lovely podcast.
Your podcasts are always so inspiring! It’s so fun seeing all of the different yarns and patterns you choose. Can’t wait to see the finished Magnolia Bloom. I believe the movie “Passing” is based upon the book by the same title, which was written by Nella Larsen in the ‘20s or ‘30s. It is an excellent book!
I'm a relatively new knitter. When I found this wonderful corner of knitting podcasts on TH-cam, I was and still am mesmerized. I've been binge watching all your previous episodes. This is the first one I've caught up with in real time, as published. Your content is so inspiring and informative! The Elton is absolutely gorgeous!!
I didn't realize the 1 of a kind show was back on! I'll have to try to get out to it - hopefully it won't be too weird if I spot you and say hi. My parents were sending me the most fantastic pictures of Ottawa during the fall - I was so jealous. I hope all is well with you and yours until next time!
Have just completed plain top down cardigan in the same shade of BaaRamEwe yarn and made Dorset buttons which have worked well. The yarn was a joy to knit and comfortable to wear, however finding it pilling which hope will stop after the initial wearings. Thinking of the Renunclus with the remainder as I’m late into the party! Another interesting and enjoyable podcast, thank you. Jackie , UK
There are so many cute tank tops out there now, it's have thought of knitting one for myself just as a layering piece. I have some MCN that was gifted to me, the colour is not "me". It would be perfect since noone would see it anyway! I also listened to The Midnight Library, and loved it! Before the Coffee Gets Cold is similar. Just finished American Dirt, excellent.
Thanks for the visit. Love all the knitting your are doing especially the Joji cardigan. Keep looking for those buttons. Or you could how us next time. I have lots of old buttons and if one of them is pretty close, that would solve it. Not on Insta, so here or R for me.
I read the Midnight Library as recommended by Leslie of the Knit Girllls podcast. Great story! I am now drinking Rooibos tea based on YOUR recommendation. Love it! Thanks!🤗
Really enjoyed this video. Rare that I listened till the end to these type of videos. Usually, I stopped after FO and UFO. However your acquisition section is enjoyable to me because you have plans , unlike an addiction to buy. Nowadays, where everybody talks about the planet, I despair to see so many youtubers just increasing their stash of yarn or fabric. I loved the beautiful scenes fromNB. Hope to hear from you in December. 😆
Well, it is hard not to buy buy buy and I cannot say I’m always very successful but I try to have plans. It’s definitely another area to think about the impact on the environment 😊
I love to knit cuff down socks. They’re quick, easy and require no thinking which is great for my recovering chemo brain. I can’t wait until I can do color work knitting again but at the moment it’s a too much for me to follow the pattern. I just finished a sock similar to your cable knit sock and got the second on half finished when I went to my yarn stash and alas I did not have any more of the yarn that I was knitting the sock with. Uiggghhhh! I’m going to Germany next week and will take my knitting tools with me to do some knitting with my cousin. I also have an empty suitcase to replenish my yarn stash. Be safe and well and I look forward to your next podcast.
@@littlebigknits I’m one of the lucky ones. I was early stage 2 colon cancer and I tell everyone get a cologuard test with your annual physical. I was totally asymptomatic and thank goodness for my astute G P he insisted I take a cocloguard test. Lovely to see you again Selma! That trip to Fredricton sounds ideal. I love exploring on my own too and thats what I did in Ottawa as you remember. It gives so much freedom and flexibility. Those brown socks look great and the sweater you started on your solo trip looks beautiful.I am so glad your big bag has been so useful. I like big bags. Have a wonderful November my dear.
Laughing out loud about your button woes, I always have the same. Never the right number, or the size is just a bit wrong, or I'm sure if I just spend 3 hours sorting through the button bin I'll find what I need...
You are such an inspiration for me, so thank you! 🧶❤️ just love your Elton Cardi. Mine is next on the to do list! And the bridge you spoke of is awesome!
Another lovely podcast! I recently had a vintage sock knitting machine refurbished. Love the history of it, but the learning curve is huge! So now I’m also converting tubes into socks. The question is, how many pairs of socks is too many?!!! I’m also knitting the Arne & Carlos Christmas stocking, I’ll be happy to add it to the KAL. I made the Kate Davies Evendoon cardigan with stripes like her pullover version, fits well - but the number of threads to sew in is ridiculous! Loved The Midnight Library!
Greetings from TO Selma! Those street views have such a familiar vibe… love the steady hand with the Camera! I had an opportunity to see Kristy Glasses recent interview with Alley Cat Yarn and just adore the Harbour colourway. Hoping to join your Christmas MAL. Take care and happy knitting. 🍁🍂🧶
I used to knit toe up socks when I first started knitting them but I really wanted to learn heal flap and gusset. As I was learning to knit top down I bought a sock ruler. The sock ruler was a complete game changer for me. My socks are always exactly how I want them now, I just slip it over the ruler. I like an 8 inch leg and need an 8.25 foot before starting the toe. I rarely need to try them on. No more guessing and they always fit exactly the same.
Your cardigan is so lovely. Can’t wait to see the button choice! I feel you on the shawl. I have recently decided to pívot on a shawl that went awry and turn it into a cowl. 😬 There is no such thing as a a too warm sweater for me. I run cold!
Omgosh, I must do that again ... short airbnb for a few days on my own! Before covid I did that somewhat regularly. I'm so happy you mentioned it, especially going east - I haven't been east here in Canada yet, but have wanted to (for some reason I usually go south lol) - I'm going to check some places out ;) Always enjoy watching, Sunshine
I went and got the Ripple Bralette pattern because of your podcast! Watching this episode reminded me that I never actually tried mine on. I needed the needles to do the West Knits MKAL, so it got put away once it was finished!
Hey Selma, Is it weird that “in my head”we are totally BFF’s? Love the Elton cardi. I have added that my to do list! Glad you were able to get the Lopi yarn from WS! 😜 Take care, Dianne in Victoria, BC
Check out the Cherry colour way in Drops Belle for your Christmas Ranunculus sweater. The yarn is a cotton-linen-rayon blend and makes a lovely garment.
I love your Elton- looks like a great sweater that you will reach for often. I just finished listening to Road Ends. Disfunctional is an understatement for that family (lol), but they did sort themselves out as time went by. Thanks for the recommendation. I am going to read more from that author. I am still looking for the perfect yarn for my first Ranunculus-I am so indecisive 🤷♀️. Fredericton looks so beautiful-it makes me want to plan a trip to the maritimes again-maybe next fall. In the meantime BC can’t make up its mind-one day stormy, the next with glorious sunshine ☀️-sometimes on the same day, but ever so pretty. I like the stark look of the bare branches too-each part has its beauty. What is the name of that song at the end of the video? I love it! I hope things settle with your family and that the hikes continue to fill you up! Thanks for another lovely “visit” with my Sunday morning coffee! 💜
Well if you like stories about dysfunctional families, Mary Lawson is your gal!! Glad you enjoyed it. I’m still a bit in shock that Claire stayed home… but at least it was on her own terms. The song is Barefoot McCoy, I Love You Only Thanks for the lovely comment 😊😊
Ah! I enjoyed your explanation of how you reinforced your DH's sweater cuffs....and *then* you mentioned that you used a "woollen spun" yarn. Hmmmm... I'm a sporadic spinner, but as I understand it, spinning "woollen" produces a yarn that is lighter and airier than spinning "worsted". Ergo, I'm thinking that if it's less rigidly/firmly spun, a "woollen" spun yarn is probably (possibly?) more vulnerable to wear at collar, cuffs and bottom edge, than is a 'worsted' spun yarn. You might want to check this out the next time you plan to knit a sweater for your DH...
Your Elton is wonderful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I think metal buttons like an antique silver would be awesome, in my opinion of course. On another note… I’m mostly a “small person knitter”. In other words, I have always knit for my babies (4) and now my grandkids (10). It’s only recently I’ve decided to delve into adult knitting. So far, I’ve made the Aileas by Isabell Kramer (LOVE) and the Anker Summer knit by the Petite Knitter which is a wonderful pattern but I used Borgo de’Pazz Sira, a bamboo silk yarn that seems to have grown to the point where I think I’m going to Tink back the ribbing and then some. . My question to you… how does one buy a “sweaters quantity” of a yarn most appealing before a pattern is picked? Any guidance would be most appreciated and indeed helpful. Thanks in advance Selma.
Having knit many garments I know that I need about 800 or 900 at most for a vest, about 1100 for a sweater and anything bigger I just add about 200 yards more. If there are a lot of cables you may need a bit more as well. That is for my short m/l frame
Gorgeous Elton cardigan😀 How much positive ease did you choose? The pattern calls for a lot of positive ease (40 cm), but I would much prefer a fit like tours!
I noticed on Ravelry that you've made the Grandfather Vest from Veronik Avery. That's one I want to cast on (I have the book). Any feedback on how it was to knit and how much you wear it? Thank you! (I am becoming a big fan of vests!)
Hoping to do a vest parade next episode. It’s a good vest. Somehow it’s not one I reach for and I’m not sure why exactly. I think it’s more the yarn than the pattern. Very pilly
Thank you for another lovely episode Selma! Are you on GoodReads? I'd love to connect with you over there if you are as I always like your book recommendations.
Oh Alex, lovely to see you hear. I am not active on Goodreads I’m afraid. I should probably give it a go. I keep track of my reading with a good old fashioned notebook ☺️😆
Hi Selma, what is reinforcement thread. Is it like embrodiery thread? Also, I had a thought that your husband might be pulling his sleeves and hem down a lot when he wears it because they are too short or at least he feels like they are. I've never heard of a sweater pulling out like that before. I'm probably wrong, but had that thought any way. 😉
I will have to observe him but I don’t think that is what he does. Let’s see!! Reinforcement thread is made by regia and it is a thin thread made of wool and nylon that you can add when knitting socks to reinforce and area you know will wear out more quickly or can be used in darning as well I imagine. Hope that helps 😊
Thank you for sharing the beautiful town you visited. Your film and book reviews were most appreciated.

I hope you like your Ripple!!
Hey Selma, Is it weird that “in my head”we are totally BFF’s? Love the Elton cardi. I have added that my to do list!
Glad you were able to get the Lopi yarn from WS! 😜
Take care, Dianne in Victoria, BC
That’s awfully sweet!!! Why thank you 😊 the Lopi is lovely 🥰 a very lovely gift indeed!!
Check out the Cherry colour way in Drops Belle for your Christmas Ranunculus sweater. The yarn is a cotton-linen-rayon blend and makes a lovely garment.
Hey... this is my store in Fredericton. I buy my yarns there very often. Greetings from NB. Alice
It may have been me that recommended Midnight Library.
The Chair was filmed at my daughter’s school, Chatham University in Pittsburgh
Thank you if you did!! Very cool re the ChAir!!
Downtown Fredericton reminds me a lot of Yarmouth here in NS. The difference is that the yarn store in Yarmouth closed.
Ugh too bad!!
The song is Barefoot McCoy, I Love You Only
Thanks for the lovely comment 😊😊
Exactly. I won’t knit him a worsted spun sweater again since he is hard on his knits. And now I have the yarn for the next time it needs a fix!
Midnight Library on my list as well. Maybe you also got the recommendation from Joanne ‘ stitching the high notes’ podcast?
That is a good possibility!!
Gorgeous Elton cardigan😀
How much positive ease did you choose? The pattern calls for a lot of positive ease (40 cm), but I would much prefer a fit like tours!
I would say about 10 cm? It’s a great pattern!
@@littlebigknits thanks for responding Selma. I'll have to look for reinforcement spindles. Good to know. TY
