This is the original version; it was produced for the film 'Layer Cake', which you should watch if you're unfamiliar with it, because it's quite simply excellent.
"The art of good business is being a good middle man. Putting people together. I'll always thank Eddie for telling me that. It's all about honor and respect."
Simply outstanding film and simply outstanding piece of music. Layer Cake is one of the best British films ever made and it's hard to think of a more emotive piece of music. Absolute brilliance.
"You're born, you take shit. Get out in the world, you take more shit. Climb a little higher, take less shit. Until one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere, and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the Layer Cake son." For those having trouble hearing.
Paul the Boatman. Kinky. The Duke. Slasher. Kilburn Jerry, Crazy Larry. Mr Lucky. Troop. Jimmy. I don't want to add my name to that list. My name? If you knew that, you'd be as clever as me.
Sometimes when I'm having one of those crap days at the job....I just listen to this on my ear phones. Her voice takes me to another place. Thanks you for the video.
Her voice is the only voice that sends a chill down my spine and makes my hair on the back of my neck stand up. I also love the intro. It's so true on how life works.
Cremator Contralto A Siren is a mythical creature from Greek mythology. It is said there voice was so enchanting that no man could ignore it. Sirens sadly lured men to them with there voice and killed them.
Lisa is absolutely awesome she has done a lot of work on film soundtracks. One of the most beautiful voices ever. One of my goals is to see her in concert sometime :)
It's actually from the movie "Layer Cake" w/ Daniel Craig - he's explaining "the facts of life": that society is like a layer cake... and the higher you climb in society, the less shit you have to take.
Rip Micheal Gambon you made layer cake the film it is today as eddie temple what a character he was. Got to be one of the best films I’ve ever watched love d, Craig and Colin summat or other one in Alan partridge alpha papa pat I believe was callled anyway rip to a true legend 😢
I have the layer cake speech as a ring tone. we were in psychology class discussing the different divisions of society and my phone rang. Basically this is the best explanation of life.
I've loved Lisa Gerrard's music since way back when she was in the band 'Dead Can Dance' in the 80's-90's. Breathtaking music with that band and her beautiful voice. If you've never heard of Dead Can Dance, you might like to check them out.
Spot on. Great film (IMHO one of the best British crime films ever - hugely underrated) - and this music is such a brilliant contrast with the deep violence and corruption in the movie.
Love this song. For me, it's one of those rare songs you get caught up in and sort of feel sad knowing it has to end. "Host of Seraphim" by Lisa Gerrard is another that's just as powerful.
Live in a smart part of town,Wash & brush up.Go to Opera,Damnation of Faust,A man sells his soul to the Devil,Of course it all ends in tears ..these affairs usually do ...😃👌🏼
Absolutely breathtaking piece of music. Lisa Gerrard is a true genius with an enchanting and deeply haunting voice. Her music is sad, inspiring and very spiritual. Repect.
First time I noticed Lisa Gerrard's voice was in Gladiator. I have heard her before, but I was never able to find out who the artist was, but when Now We Are Free came out. It opened a door to music I never new existed. I am a fan for life.
Michael Gambon's speech at the start add's to the run up of this song and the swearing is said in the right context, both are just as hunting and as powerful on there own, together they are outstanding.
Don;t know if this has already been answered but I have the CD and his voice-over is still in it. Still, I think it lends itself to the song - it sets the tone on a somber note, a sort of acknowledgment of the sheer futility of unbridled ambition.
TH-cam made me discover Lisa Gerrard. I went to her concert in Antwerp on november 13 and was perplexed. She enslaved me : can't stop listening to that haunting voice. Nice video also!
Oh my god. Thanks a lot, I've been trying to work out what this song is... i heard it of course at the end of layer cake, it's so haunting. Nearly moved me to tears. She has an unearthly voice.
the depth and otherworldly beauty of this song feels out of place in the facile, superficial, vacuous world layer cake presents. And I think that's the point. It's not within the film, it doesn't exist in that world, but it frames our reaction to it, it provoke emotions about it that the world doesn't warrant, like everyone chasing empty status, success and wealth in that world.
i heard this track while watching Top Gear's review of the Alfa Romeo 8c and the look of that car with Lisa Gerrard's voice was just epic...but i degress, great vid and amazing track
When you hear this voice, you feel and know that there is a spark of divinity in humankind. It is as if the Father is singing right through her. Amazing
makes me just want to go hard in the weight room and on the field, love this kind of music not even rap or rock can make feel like i want to go pass my limitations
Rest in peace Micheal Gambon one of the most inspirational speeches I’ve ever heard. Thank you for all the movies that you starred in over many years.
I shared this for Mickael.G.
R.i.P man

Well said 1 of the most true things an smart comment s I've heard an im34
Watched layer cake easy 6 /7 times and will 6/ 7 more
Agreed. Not often I agree with clowns on youtube. But you get it bro.
Layer cake, this song, and Michael Gambon mean more to people than many think. It’s a cult classic. RIP Eddie Temple. You were a legend.
This is the original version; it was produced for the film 'Layer Cake', which you should watch if you're unfamiliar with it, because it's quite simply excellent.
Emmanuel Goldstein the book it’s based on is quite good too, even if it is more of a pulp fiction
"The art of good business is being a good middle man. Putting people together. I'll always thank Eddie for telling me that. It's all about honor and respect."
Did I really believe Eddie was gonna give me 3 million for those pills ?
........ did I F*ck !!!
I agree, a picturesque image of London a homage to it’s past, and a precursor to how it looks today.
When you've lived that life since you were released from Youth Custody, it means something, that the average Joe won't understand in a million years.
Simply outstanding film and simply outstanding piece of music.
Layer Cake is one of the best British films ever made and it's hard to think of a more emotive piece of music.

Fermer les yeux durant ce majestueux voyage et vous la verrez dans le fond du miroir qui apparaîtra derrière cette sublime voix..... Bonne Écoute....
This song and film are epic…massively underrated
One day, we'll never take shit my son!
I've heard some music in my time but nothing as powerful & moving as this .. lisa Gerrard's voice blow's me away .
she did crazy good with the Gladiator soundtrack too i thought
"Vespers" and "of love undone" are imo her greatest tracks
Epic film, and the soundtrack absolutely transcends generations.
Sounds as haunting and as beautiful now as it did back then. Stunning sound.
I could listen to this forever!!Want this played at my funeral!
One of the best pieces of music ever...
This song introduced me to Lisa Gerrard and this type of music. Thank you, it's beautiful!!

+RunnerGunner If it was possible to demonstrate what a siren would sound like, Lisa Gerrard is the perfect example.

pff voice , wat about the real
RunnerGunner Ulysses had himself lashed to the ship's mast so he could hear their song without falling prey to their enchantment and dying.

Totally agree; 'voice of the earth' - couldn't have put it any better, that describes her sound so well. beautiful
Outstanding music, outstanding film, perfectly cast. All Lisa's work makes you contemplate life.
That's deep dude
Best ending of one of the best movies. So dramatic, ironic and beautiful..and the music.no comment.
Lisa is absolutely awesome she has done a lot of work on film soundtracks. One of the most beautiful voices ever. One of my goals is to see her in concert sometime :)
Amazingly haunting and uplifting with a subtle sadness.
Her music helps me to express pain and sadness and take it out.
I started to listen to her resulting " NOW WE ARE FREE" which is amazing song.
Loved Layer cake, Lisa Gerrards voice is just haunting.
In a good way.
It's actually from the movie "Layer Cake" w/ Daniel Craig - he's explaining "the facts of life": that society is like a layer cake... and the higher you climb in society, the less shit you have to take.
