  • .. one classic wreck story ..
    Background ::
Car was bought in Žilina, Slovakia for 150€ as non running wreck. It was dedicated for scrapyard, but im a Citroen lover, so i decidd to buy it and make something better than scrapyard.
We pulled it out from its many years place..it was stuck in garden, wheels were half dug in the ground. It took over 3 hours in night (10pm) to dig it from ground, move on the road and load it on trailer.
I didnt see much from the car, and the next day i took my old camera with me..
Car had no papers and was officialy decomissioned from traffic (scrapped) and in my country its not possible to put it back on the road legally.
Overall condition was bad, no hydraulics.. and no brakes. We braked only by engaging gear. Body and interior bad.. because it had open window and hood for many years, and water got inside.
Budget for this car repair will exceed budget for buying car in good condition.. so it was dedicated for parts only, there was no hope for full restoration.
In the end, this car made me 100€ + some fun and knowledge :)

Love my cx’s. Got 5 of them. Bought a turbo diesel estate that hadn’t run for 14 years and sat under a carport. Got it delivered to my house and after some new fuel and a filter clean, it fired up and even the suspension rose up with no leaks.👍

Too bad this car was so damaged after such a long time out of serve.
It would have been great if this car was fixed and in shape to ride again.
But yeah, it would have need a lot of money because almost everything should have been replaced.
    Great video btw!

      1) First of all, check if the engine's seized. Put a socket or spanner on the crankshaft bolt, and see if it turns. It shouldn't take that much force to spin it (make sure you don't undo the crank bolt by mistake...) If it is, then take out the injectors and put a mix of ATF and acetone down the cylinders (50/50 - ATF and acetone have a tendency to separate, so make sure it's well mixed), this acts as a very good penetrating oil, but depending on how bad it is, WD40 might be enough. Re-install the injectors with fresh heat-shields and washers. Obviously skip this step if your engine isn't seized.
      2) Now, you will want to check for seized valves. This can cause a problem, especially on an interference engine (where the valves and pistons occupy the same space in the cylinder), and most diesels are interference engines. If you turn the key, and a valve is stuck open, then either the engine will lock up solid, or the stuck valve will be bent, resulting in at least a head rebuild. So I recommend you do check this.
To make sure no valves are stuck, simply turn the engine over at least 2 revolutions (I recommend 4) with a spanner (or socket) on the crankshaft bolt. If any valves are stuck, then you will reach a point where you won't be able to spin the engine over. This takes us on to step 3:
      3) Now you can skip this step, but I recommend you do it before starting the engine. Take the rocker cover off, and a) check that all the valves/rockers are moving correctly
      b) lubricate the valve train with an oil gun, since the engine has sat for a while, all the oil would have drained back into the sump, basically meaning there would be nothing to lubricate the rockers etc upon startup, until oil pressure builds up.
      4) Check the oil. If it's a diesel, then it's completely normal for it to be black. Make sure there's no water in there. I highly recommend changing the oil regardless of the condition, if it's been sitting.for 5 years.
      5) Make sure there's coolant in the reservoir.
      6) This step is quite important. What you want to do is, remove the air filter, and make sure nothing has made a nest in the air filter housing or any of the intake pipes.. You wouldn't want all that going in your engine...
      7) Now we can move on to the fuel system. Now I'm gonna assume your car has a diesel engine. First of all, make sure the fuel shut off solenoid is connected. It requires a constant 12 volt input from the battery to open and allow fuel to enter the injection pump. It is located on the injection pump, usually on top of where the high pressure metal fuel lines come out the pump, and should have a little wire connected to it.
      8) I recommend you change the fuel filter, but obviously it's not strictly necessary.
      9) An old diesel will pretty much run on anything even remotely combustible, so you can run it safely on 5 year old diesel that's in the tank, *as long as*
      a) there's no water in there
      b) there's no bacterial growth in there.
To check this, there should be a little white plastic screw at the bottom of the filter housing. Undo it, take a sample, and check the condition of the diesel. You should be able to tell if anything's up with it by smelling it and looking at it. The colour of the diesel depends on where the fuel was purchased from, but usually it has a yellow-ish appearance (at least in France it does).
      10) Now, bleed the fuel system. For a diesel engine to run adequately, there must be no air in the fuel lines whatsoever. To do this, first of all open the bleed nipple (a weird little screw with a hole on the top, usually made of copper, and requires an 8 mm spanner to undo) on the fuel filter housing, and pump the diesel with the hand presser (or squeeze the hand primer bulb with your hand-depending on what type of fuel system you have).
Now, bleed the fuel line going from the filter to the pump. To do this, there should be another bleed nipple where the fuel hose is connected to the injection pump. Open it, and do like earlier, pump the diesel until air free diesel pours out.
Now, you need to bleed the metal high pressure fuel lines that go from the pump to the injectors. Simply crack open the 17 mm nuts that connect the fuel lines to the injectors, and get an assistant to turn the engine over for you. Eventually, after cranking, diesel should come out the fuel lines. When air free diesel comes out, tighten the 17 mm
nuts. You can also bleed the return hoses, but I don't think it's strictly necessary.
**Be careful not to get any diesel on the alternator, or the starter motor, as this can cause them to fail** My dad's mk1 Trafic (2.1d) had a leaky injection pump, which went all over the alternator (on the J8S engine the pump is right on top of the alternator). It didn't take long for the alternator to fail. We got the leak fixed, and I changed the alternator. Thankfully old engines are easy to work on!
**Also, be careful not to get any diesel in your eyes,** when you're bleeding the high pressure fuel lines, the diesel does have a tendency to squirt out if there's air in there. I recommend you where gloves while working on the fuel system, as diesel is *very* bad on your skin.
      11) Now, if you (or I) haven't forgot anything, and there aren't any other issues, the engine should fire right up. Cycle the glow-plugs twice, and turn the key! Just don't touch the accelerator pedal once it starts; the engine hasn't run in ages, so you need to let the oil circulate around the engine before accelerating. And don't worry about it stalling at idle, as soon as a diesel engine fires up, then it should idle fine (or hunt if there's air in the injection pump), so no need to rev it like this guy in the video did when he started it up.
      12) Now that the engines running, make sure the thermostat in functional; keep a close eye on the temperature gauge, make sure it doesn't overheat (you mustn't let it exceed 90 °C). If it's got an electric fan on the radiator, then run it until the fan kicks in, like that you can be sure that everything in the cooling system is working correctly.
Make sure there aren't any fuel leaks coming from the pump, oil leaks aren't really a problem, unless they start soaking any belts or the clutch. Make sure no coolant's leaking.
I recently just successfully started a seized mk1 2.1 diesel Trafic (another one lol) after it sat for 6 and a half years. We tried to start it 4 years ago but it wouldn't go. Me being only 11 I had no fucking clue how an engine worked. But now I know quite a lot from working on all our old vehicles. I discovered that the only reason it didn't start was because the fuel solenoid was disconnected lmao. But by then it had seized so I had a lot more work to do. Also a mouse had somehow found its way into the air filter... It's a currently a huge rust bucket, the lower half of the sills are non existent lol, but the chassis rails are in excellent condition so I want to restore it. I already have experience welding, I fixed rust on my dad's Trafic. The only way to learn is to do it! If you have any other questions then please ask. And yes, I wrote this myself and it took me about half an hour lol.

Check oil, water, battery. Turn the key :) This had problem with fuel tank, lines and filter so i needed to feed the hi-pressure pump directly from small diesel tank. This engine was sold and is now running in one veteran car. + In my case, there was old rusty fuel tank, so i fitted small fuel filter to see if there is some debris, because it can clog or damage fuel pump and i wanted to save engine. After start i was giving it throttle to bleed air from fuel circuit and injectors.

@@mr.slaphappy3794 I work with cars since my 11 years. I was car handler, and mechanic for few years and many cars. I do understand them pretty well. There was no danger in revving it, because engine was revolving for few times, oil was oily and was everywhere because my oil pressure check light worked. But it was needed to bleed and clean hi pressure pump and injectors with new fuel (new fuel contains much more cleaning agents than before 12 years). You dont know if the car will hold idle, especially on old clogged engines where fuel could bring debris and clog some parts of fuel system.
