Building A Modern Industrial TV Stand

  • Metalworking and welding is something I am super passionate about. I find it to be extremely fulfilling, beautiful in how it looks, and its also much faster than traditional woodworking for furniture. So when my good buddy Ramy, asked me for some advice for his obnoxiously large TV he recently build, I knew I was going to be thinking something metal. He couldnt find anything online so I gave in and made him this one.

This build features not only some hilarious comedy...... IMO. But it also is packed with metalworking tips and ideas that I use all the time and will be teaching at my course at this years SPRING MAKE. IF you're looking to attend an awesome maker show, with hands on experience, check out SPRING MAKE APRIL 23-25 2019 in Cleveland OH. Use code MADEFORPROFIT to save $200.

Magnets totally affect the welding arc. Particularly noticeable with TIG but OK if you can get the magnet more than a few inches away. The welding arc is an electric current and and so is deflected by magnetic fields. Nice project by the way.

If you want to dig deeper it is called arc blow, run into this problem when working on ships and offshore equipment that use powerful magnets for compass and leveling. To combat this switch your machine to AC instead of DC to complete the circuit.

  • @paulrisley4082

DC (Direct Current) is why the welds are being affected. AC isn’t affected by the magnet or magnetized material. Awesome build!

I remember the first time my friends and I saw a mentor on our robotics team use one of those toothed metal chopsaw blades. We never heard of the technology before, and we hid behind a workbench thinking he was about to use a wood blade to cut aluminum. We were amazed, it is truly cool technology, not having to have a lot of sparks when cutting steel.

John, as a certified welding inspector I can say 1000% that magnets 🧲 mess up a weld. It basically pulls the plasma to one side or the other, thats why degaussing magnetized pipe is such a big deal on pipelines where we want the boom stuff to stay where we want it.
Been bringing your whole library while I'm between projects, keep it up, get squirelly!!!🐿

Hi John. I really like your stand. I'm an welding Instructor with the Salt Lake Community college. The question was Does the magnets effect the welds? The answer is yes in the flow of the electricity for the arc. It gets distorted, but not to the point of the weld fusing to the base material or the joint your welding. you may see discontinuity of the weld face or undercut an an example. Now Electricity will flow to the point of least resistance, when you add a magnet in the joint closest to the weld point and the electricity get redirected slightly that's when it may effect the weld itself, but using magnets to tack the joint together the welds themselves are not effected because when the liquid metal solidifies, its doesn't hurt the grain structure because the magnets are just not that strong to effect it to much. I hope this helps understanding how welds work and to answer the question.

Magnetic arc blow is caused by the magnetic fields in the joint becoming unbalanced. It is not as common with thinner material but it is still possible and magnets can cause issues but if your just fitting and tacking they work great.

i thought it was wood in the opening segment, in the end you could see how it got that way but all metal might be poor on acoustics from the TV (depends on the TV speaker orientation, down firing could cause drumming on the metal, wood is more forgiving on that), looks great tho. Must have taken a long time to do all that welding. Wish i could weld :-( you are lucky to have this great array of tools and workshop facilities to use to create these great projects

Yeah, if you get too close to the magnet and you will have to chase that arc all over the place. Heat is not good for magnets, a few quick tacks is about all you should do with magnet at weld joint (other side of joint) otherwise they will rapidly weaken.

That was very entertaining and educational to watch so thank you. I’d appreciate if you could share a little on your design/approach - it’s something I’d like to have a go at but haven’t really done so yet. I assume you use 1/8” x 2” for the angle and 1/16” for the plate. How do you deal with the mill scale - grind it off for just the weld points? Does it matter when using the DTM paint? The end result looks really great so well done. Cheers

    • @John_Malecki
      @John_Malecki  5 ปีที่แล้ว

ITs 1.5" angle at .125 thickness and 16g sheet. when using DTM paint you wanna follow what the can suggests, and when you're welding MIG you can just burn thru the mill scale mostly, I sanded the whole unit after i assembled it to get it to be nice and clean for paint too

Nice work John! Just found your channel! Subbed now🤙🏼 one thing I noticed is the amount of what I think is smoke or could be dust/debris blown around when your using your plasma if that’s smoke that’s not normal so I’m thinking that’s dust? I don’t know whatever great content

Really the only time the magnet REALLY effects a weld is when there's a potential for super high pressure leaks or stand alone structural welding. Other than that, the welding effects the magnet more than the magnets effect the welding

What would you say is the benefit to having a horizontal bandsaw if you have a slugger? I have a slugger and cannot think of one.

Batch cutting and longer pieces . If you watch my video on building my station, I use it to batch cut all the pieces. Makes it super fast

Hey John I’m in a ROP welding class at my high school and I was wondering if you have any blueprints or plans for this build. If you did I would love and try to see if I can build it myself. If not sorry for bothering and have a good day.

At 7:15 look like you could use FR pants. I know you are a professional but Makes me nervous seeing someone pointing the business end of a plasma cutter at their at their feet

I think it was more the angle of the camera, it shoots straight down. The sparks on my boots are from the angle grinder, those are harmless ! I appreciate the concern tho!

Electricity and magnetism as forces can be unified into electromagnetic radiation, they are like twins. Together they make light and microwaves and infra red lamps etc. Yep I guess the magnet deflects the stream of plasma that you are making and so the heat goes somewhere else. You could get some of those "no-magnet" magnets that don't interact with electric currents but they unfortunately only exist in a different type of universe.
