My first street bike, bought new in '82, (my mom passed and left me some money when I was 12) when I turned 18. RODE IT EVERYWHERE!! Thank you mommy.

A 1982 GPz550 was my first streetbike in 1984. I bought it used at the local independent Kawasaki dealership for $2,500, and it had full Kerker 4-into-1 exhaust system, high-performance Mikuni carbs, performance ignition, and an clip-on full-coverage windscreen (a big sail, so off it stayed). I put a lot of miles on that bike, and seeing them always makes me smile. :)

Bought my 1981 550 from Dad of fellow soldier. $850 and rode around Wisconsin, many overnight trips. 40k+ miles put on it

I owned a CBX550F1 during the early eighties in the UK and the GPZ550 was always the bike to beat. Fun times.

I love that bike! It’s a beauty guys! I was born in 86 so my early memories of bikes are my dad and his buddies riding stuff like this and Seca’s, lowering them, pulling the baffles, and boy did it make my face light up when they would leave our house and stripe the road up as they left, ah what good memories 👍✌️

Had that exact bike, ordered it new in 82. One kickass handling bike. Usually could double recommend speed of corners. Bigger bike might beat in the straights but I mean NOTHING could keep up in the corners. Put 30,000+ miles on it before I traded it. I love that ride.

I admire your ability to rebuild a motorcycle, I bought many years ago a gpz550 motorcycle destroyed in a police auction, I did not get all the parts and now I need many newer original parts, I hope I can get them since I have the motorcycle as a great paperweights for many years.

Love this channel & the enthusiasm for motorcycles. I acquired an 82 Honda Ascot FT500 for free (50% on from & 50 in a box). Everything looks in perfect structural condition, besides faded paint and crusty parts that just need a good clean. This channel showed me the value of the bike. And just yesterday, I bought a little Chinese 50cc bike for my kids from this dude who has a 1980s Kawasaki gpz550 and Honda cx500 completes, just need some tinkering, and he’s letting me have them for free! So this channel has helped instill a since of pride, in restoring old, but great, forgotten motorcycles.

Mine was a an eighty one with dual shocks. There’s never been a better looking fairing on any bike.
The power to weight ratio was excellent and very high revving engine.
Firecracker red and black out treatment was excellent.

Had an '82 GPz 550 w/ a Kerker 4:1 and Corbin seat as my only form of transportation for 4 years.. That thing would turn a 20 y/o into a 16 y/o right quick when it came on the pipe around 6 grand. I seem to remember always being 2 pts. away from losing my license.

I bought a brand new 1983 GPz550 back in the day. Only differences for the '83 were red wheels, different graphics on the side covers with more black, and I believe a red swing arm. My previous bike was a 1980 Suzuki GS450L, and the difference in power was amazing. The GPz would suck your eyeballs down your throat. I enjoyed it for a couple of years, but the riding position caused by the low bars, rearset pegs, and rock hard seat started to become painful, even at age 24. It was my first and last sport bike. I went back to cruisers. It was a beautiful bike though, 10 times better looking than todays "crotch rockets"

In 1981, the lead mechanic at the Kawasaki dealer sold his Z1 and bought the 1st 550 GPz that came in... I asked him why would he do that? He said, “Ride one”. I sold my custom H2 and bought the second one they got in.. the horsepower, weight and handling.. They had it all!.. put 66,000 miles on that bike before I sold it for an 84 1100 GPz... wished I kept the little red monster...
