As always, a thorough tutorial on how to fix our cars. My daughter's 2014 Accord has a pretty serious oil leak and I got stumped on the procedure for getting the intake manifold off and how to get the rear valve cover off. This was the perfect video.

For those doing this kind of job, I recommend lubricating the outside of the spark plug tube seals with engine oil before driving them in. The oil helps the seal go in without binding or tearing.

Don’t forget to spray down and clean the EGR ports especially on the early J series like the J30 3.0 V6 they had much smaller EGR port holes on both the Block and manifold And would easily clog even after a thorough cleaning and cause misfire and insufficient lift EGR codes I use the supertech throttle body cleaner from Walmart which had more acetone as it’s main active ingredient and cost less than a can of CRC I found the supertech to more effective at melting the carbon residue makes it run like Coca Cola when it comes out and you get a lot more for your money

I came here to say this. On the J35s I'd replace the rear cam cap seals and probably change the spark plugs since you're in the neighborhood anyway. On the VCM engines, it's a perfect time to change the VTEC solenoid, too (forward, Bank 2)

I followed this video using mallet to get those tube seals in, then I double-checked around the seals where they folded and guess what? There were at least 1 or 2 cracks. Lucky me Oreiley has one for me to finish the job. Anyways, like this guy said, use some engine oil and you can just press the seals in by hand

Thank you for taking the time to do create this video. Just did this on my 06 MDX earlier today that was slightly leaking oil out the gasket. Around the 15:50 mark, to put those seals back on the bolt, I used a 12mm deep well impact socket. With the bolt thread facing up like in the video, put the socket over the rubber side of the seal and I was able to easily knock those back in without damaging the rubber parts.

Personally I hate the VCM on the later JSeries Honda had this engine for over 25 years and goofed it with that stupid VCM is dumb engineering decision if I ever seen one I’ve have both a 2000 EX V6 that I bought from a desperate college student for $600 bucks all original it runs like a champ currently has 246,645 miles I’ve driven it all across the country has never let me down best of all no stupid VCM I had the notorious Honda transmission rebuilt by a
Tranny shop owner and child hood friend before I rebuilt it I jacked it up and drained it come find out the fluid was burnt 🥵 and instead of Honda fluid I used the JSO Japanese certified for Honda Nissan Toyota and Hyundai Castrol transmax for imports which I also requested my friend put back in it after the rebuild because I just refused to pay for the overpriced and overhyped by Honda heads besides Honda fluid isn’t made by them but by idemitsu of Japan who also makes the Nissan fluid which is part their CVT problem just ask Amsoil there’s also video on TH-cam about it too

You are the absolute best. Your videos are detailed, thorough, and easy to follow along. I am a beginner DIYer and have what appears to be a valve cover gasket leak in my 2016 Accord 2.4L. I'm researching videos and checking hondapartsnow and rockauto looking for the gasket, and was confused why the part images didn't match what is shown in the Haynes manual for my car model. @ 27:10 I realized why. I was looking at cylinder head gaskets instead of valve cover gaskets! You saved me a lot of time by nonchalantly demonstrating each and every part and step. I was looking at the wrong part on rockauto, and now see a whole gasket kit for all of it I can buy. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication sharing your wisdom. It helps a lot.

I found it to be super simple to insert the valve cover bolts into the rubber part of the washer by simply separating the rubber from the metal. I was able to easily press them over the large part of the bolt by hand without any extra effort. Super easy, no damage to the rubber at all. I also found it to be very simple to get the spark plug tube seals out with a seal pulling tool. This destroys the seals, but so what.

How you like that stupid VCM in comparison to the natural smoothness of the 3.0 I have the 2000 EX V6 all original with 249,666 miles in comparison to my 2010 EXL 3.5 V6 coupe with VCM that has all kinds of performance issues from mysterious misfires and erratic acceleration and complete power loss issues during a hard acceleration I noticed it does this intermittently as if someone removed the negative battery cable for a few seconds then it continues to drive normally again the dash goes out and comes back on after a few milliseconds sometimes back to normal fast it doesn’t even loose the the radio code it Will throw a CEL code sometimes there is clearly a performance reliability difference I wish Honda had never done this it was a huge mistake on the part of their engineering team and they don’t even offer a software/firmware update to disable it which I’m quite sure they can do you don’t have to buy a VCM muzzler

A good method to get those rubber grommets onto the valve cover bolts is to use a ratchet socket. The metal stop fits through a half inch socket. So pick one that is slightly smaller than the grommet. I used a little engine oil to lube the grommet. My workbench was a sidewalk when i did this. i set everything on the ground and tapped the bolt into the grommet.

I concur, the slow movement of the pressing motion prevents tearing and gives the rubber time to stretch, something that cannot he done by tapping them in. Previously when I worked on a Honda valve cover, I believe I used a large c-clamp with a properly sized deep well socket to press the new grommets on.

It threw a code once or twice, don't remember the code, but it was indicative of the valves being a bit tight. So I decided do adjust the valves and put in new valve cover seals. Job is a lot of work since you need to remove the plenum. Have to say it idles so smooooth now though and economy improved a little bit. I'm arms deep in fixing the dreaded oil pump leak now.

Thank you Eric for your expertise and for taking your time help us all out.
I just performed this service last night. A few things that can help.
If you purchased NEW valve cover grommets and they came with the small silver cups, seperate the grommets from the silver cups using a small screwdriver and drop the grommets into a glass of hot water. This will soften them and make them more pliable.
Seperate the OLD valve cover grommet from the silver cup using a small screwdriver. Use snips to cut the grommets from the valve cover bolts. If you are reusing the old grommets, they just need to be examined and cleaned.
Clean the valve cover bolts, slip a silver cup over ithe bolts and then slip the grommet over the bolt. Without being bound at the outer edges by the silver cup, the grommet is free to expand a little more and I was able to slip all 10 of them onto the valve cover bolts just using my hands.
Hope that this helps. Nothing sucks more than breaking a part that you absolutely need to finish up the job.

Not sure it is very important but the torque spec on the covers themselves is 8.7~9 ft.lbs..and the sequence is different IIRC. Great video, as always, keep up the good work

Just started on the replacement of the PVC valve. It didn't brake.. It disintegrated. going to have to remove intake and valve cover to get all the pieces out. I figure while I'm at it may as well replace both valve cover gaskets too.

That intake manifold is similar to 4G TL's, that it has rubber gasket on the cover as opposed to the metal ones on 04-05. Looks more like UA7 (3.5L) instead of UA6 (3.2L). The location of the IAT sensor is also different. The throttle body gasket is about $1, genuine Honda.
There are some cheap seal removing tool at Amazon. I bought one at $10 to remove drive shaft seal. Works pretty good (made in China, as you might have guessed it). On engine & tranny seals, I coat them with either high-temp silicone grease (genuine Honda, hefty $50 for a toothpaste size tube) or engine oil.

Eric, separate the metal portion from the gasket portion on to install the valve cover bolt easier. You can then just put it on like a tire.

Be careful newer J engines have the spool valves on both cylinder heads, half tuck under valve cover the half that sticks out tends to leak as they are sealed with Honda Bond, can give a false valve cover gasket leak. Couldn’t see them on this engine but the newer ones, your wife’s Odyssey comes to mind.

Hi Eric, thank you for sharing this video. It's very straight forward and detailed. I have a question, if you or anyone else who is familiar with the J35 engines. Is this service exactly the same for my TL? If so, I'm definitely going to be doing this DIY very soon.

Considering the shituation vis a vis the 1%, i think everyone is on the low end of the income scale, most just don't understand or know it. And considering the wealth of the world, we should all be able to live well enough, but greed and villainy is prime, apparently.

Love it but just choose carefully. For the same money roughly you can often find higher quality stuff at lowes HD and sale items a the parts stores. That said, their no questions replacement policy is great.

To get the old grommets off the valve cover bolts, find a deep socket big enough for the head of the bolt to fit into but not the steel grommet cover, then tap the bolt out of the grommet. Those bolts have pilot points so they can stand one or two hits without damaging the threads. Then to put the new grommets on, get a 10mm box end wrench and hold it in your hand with the head of the bolt in the box end. Then put the new grommet over the end of the bolt, get a 10mm wide-flange nut and your little impact driver and thread the nut down. It pushes the new grommet past the metal collar very nicely. Nice and uniform, no damage at all, even with aftermarket grommets.

Some Accords have the exact same engine, as long as it is 3.2L. Those Accords & TL's are made on the same platform in Marysville, Ohio. I got some use parts off of Accords for my 2004 TL at a junkyard. The engine model type should be J32A3.

Hey @EricTheCarGuy, do the spark plug tube seals go all the way down to meet the lip in the valve cover? Or do they go down until they're level with with the rim?
