  • I make and fit new custom glass for the Rat Rod I'm currently building. I don't use the traditional rubber, opting for a more modern approach instead! Follow along through the whole process.

    I’ve used this process on a large home build also. We called it Glazing. Taped off the glass and used hard rubber spacers and when I removed the excess Glaze I Used and hard rubber shaped like a 3” pencil eraser. No black fingers. Haha. 😂 and I pulled the type before it cured completely so it didn’t pull out the glaze. Nice job buddy. I love this rat rod. 👍🏻✌🏻

We had stopped to talk for a minute then we said let’s get back to work and my old friend starts yelling, WHERE’S my trowel WHERE’s my trowel. LMAO. he looks down and it’s in his hand. I’ll never forget that !! 😂😜✌🏻now I do the same thing. Hahha

    I thought this would be about cutting laminated glass.
    I just ordered a couple of green glass cutting discs for the angle grinder.
    It seems you can transfer your cardboard pattern to glass, tape up the glass and cut it yourself...one side at a time.
    I believe with a little practice, you could cut your own curved windshield.

    using a tongue depressor or wider icecream stick instead of your finger works well using isopropyl alcohol or Acetone (dip the popsickle/tongue depressor)to finish/smooth the sealant. You can also file the end of the stick if your looking to create a certain profile. Used in aviation manufacturing industry where sealant profile must meet spec.

    I’ve been installing glass for 14 years and if it was me personally I would of went with a nice black universal molding on the outside of the glass similar to the older jeep windshield would of gave you a great reveal and looks better than the urethane ran around the glass just my opinion from experience

    Hey Duffy, I started my " re- building old junk" career after I retired. Since then I've done three 70s jeeps, a IH truck and nowy 64 F100. On the first jeep I used $20 a tube seal filler. After that I switched to $5 a tube urethane. Works great. I also use the "finger trowel" method for finishing. By the time I'm done every finger, my shirt, pants... are full of it?:) Depending on the application you can spray a little dish soap water on and it leaves a smooth finish and helps with curing. My brother and I just finished installing the wind screen and rear window with the rubber gaskets. A bit of a struggle but then we didn't know what the hell we were doing! But it's great fun to learn. My next project may be a rat!:) Think of the money I can save on Bondo! Thanks for the great videos:)

    Often wondered if that could be done that way? Great job 👏. I have tried cutting the windscreen with a cut off weel or a ceramic weel so far haven't perfected that trick i can cut it for a ways but end up cracking it i still have to try running water over it while i cut ??? I tried it on junk windscreens that i didn't need just to see my options. If the glass shop can why can't we ? Hmmm just thinking lol

    How do you go about doing a windshield for a car with a chopped top and a curved windshield? Or, is this variety of car not have a chopped top done to it?

    • @ratrodsafrica
      @ratrodsafrica  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Curved windshields are a real challenge, which is why most guys only chop cars with flat glass. The curved glass needs to be cut smaller and that is very tricky. You do find some glass experts that are willing to try, at your risk that the glass might crack. Some guys make up the curved windshield with Plexiglass that is relatively easy to form with heat. But that stuff always scratches easily
