@12:10 “I don’t trust it”. I carry the Grayl filtration and purification system and trust it implicitly. It’s heavier for sure, and not used by many hikers, but for me, why carry a filter system that can’t do the job.
99.999999% of the time my filter is perfect for the job. This time unfortunately, it wasn’t. I do wish Grayl had a stand alone filter. Or at least something with a bag. The proprietary bottle system and limited carry capacity make it a tough sell for me.
And from what little I do know about the toxic algae outbreaks, even purifiers can’t remove the toxins alone. You’d need to filter through the purifier and then use tabs too. www.msrgear.com/blog/what-hikers-should-know-about-toxic-algae-blooms/#:~:text=While%20a%20purifier%20will%20not,when%20processing%20algae%2Dcontaminated%20water.
Thanks for including the video about something growling.... yep that would be unnerving! Maybe a bear was growling at the coyote? Anyway glad the critters left you alone! The only animal that I've run into while hiking at night in that area was.... a herd of cows, lol.
Thanks for taking us along on your adventure Jim. I think it was still a smart trip! You knew what you wanted and needed. And you have the experience and confidence to do these things. I'm kind of in a similar boat and am wanting to get out for 2-3 days at least. I've been busy the past couple of weeks and evidently have a few more projects to do before I head out. So I really enjoyed tagging along with you. I'm looking forward to your next adventure! Take it easy and stay stoked Jim 🤙🏻
Thanks for coming along! It’s tough to balance life and fun sometimes. It’s a big part of why I take these one night trips as often as I can. One night under the stars is better than no nights under the stars!
I've done a lot of "day hiking on impulse" while traveling, and it always seems to be just what I need. I always carry my essentials when I travel, so while it may be unplanned, it's never unprepared.
I think that’s the crux. I may not have known where I was headed, but I had all I needed to make sure I was safe and successful! Love it. Great comment.
I’ve done a couple of no plan trips into my default place near home and I guess I’ve forgotten just how much I enjoyed them. I believe I’m overdue for one. Thanks for the reminder Jim!✌️
They can be a lot of fun! I saw parts of Grouse Ridge I’d never seen before. I’ve been there so many times, and just gone to the usual spots. It was fun to see new views in my favorite area!
That’s nice to hear. I’ve been going back and forth about doing these “vlog” style videos. I had decided to stop, but this one felt like it needed that presentation. I’ve been getting positive feedback, so maybe I’ll keep it going.
Oh this is so cool, it sounds like you did follow Granite Creek all the way down to Loney Lake! Now I know it's possible to get there from above (I usually come from the BlueLake / Grouse Ridge trail and xc up to Loney Lake). Too bad it was not nice there - usually it's beautiful and there is a little campsite. I'm wondering if the lake where you stayed overnight is the one behind Downey, along the outflow? This is so fun watching your adventures that sort of overlap with some of mine :)

That's an awesome place to live with that place only an hour drive away.
It’s my favorite thing about Reno. The city itself is pretty unremarkable, but a couple hours in any direction and I’m in some amazing wild space.
I need to do a trip with no plan. Love it! Thanks for the inspiration!
I really think everyone should try it (within as narrow a set of parameters as needed to stay safe of course)
Looks peaceful. Makes me want to be a bit more spontaneous.
@@WallowaHikes 60/40 peaceful and stressful haha. Maybe 70/30 😉
Thanks so much for bringing us along! I feel like I was right there with you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m enjoying the conversation. I feel like I’m with you.

Loved the vid❤❤❤
Thanks so much!

I spend a lot of time out near Grouse Ridge. Close to home, and tons to explore.
The lake I stayed at was above Downy, I had to walk past one other small lake to get back to the trail at Downy.
