I’m loving this channel. I’m from the US with an English grandmother who married a Danish sea merchant. I never got to meet either of them. These stories are fascinating ❤
What a fantastic video. I expected it to be like 15mins and never looked at the time when I hit play. Super happy this was a longer than normal youtube video on history. Great stuff! Subed and belld.
I haven't even finished the video yet, but it was already very interesting. For example, it was especially fascinating to learn that the old ruins of Londinium for long period just stood there completely abounded while a new Anglo-Saxon settlement developed next to them.
Thank you Pete Kelly for these very informative and inspiring videos. Many of my ancestors were Danes and Normans who sojourned in England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales before coming to America in the colonial period. Your videos have opened my eyes to what their lives were like in the past. Thank you for your hard work and research!!!
Great as usual. One day you will make a vid that mildly disappoints and I will be ready to tell you. Till then - keep it up. A lot of good history channels on youtube these days, but yours is the best.

I love these videos so much man. This one in particular was so well narrated and detailed that it almost felt like I was right there sailing through history with Wulfstan. Amazing.
Fascinating! Here in the UK, we learn a little as we grow up about Saxons and Vikings spreading west to the the British Isles but we learn little about their exploits in other directions. Good to get some understanding of the big picture.
Again first class work Pete and although I know a lot about history you added some extra knowledge. I'm probably not the only one who experienced it. I hope you once made something about Karl 10. Gustav's Russian War - 1656 - 1661 - and the life the soldiers - on both sides - were exposed to. Although I am Danish, I thought it was an exciting war. It did not change anything - besides hard times in Sweden.
Thanks for watching! It's a little out of my current time frame. I tend to focus on ancient history up to around 1200 ish. I am just one guy so wouldn't be able to give enough depth on that time period. Maybe one day though
Thanks for another great and entertaining video! I was expecting a bit more on the concept (and history) of "Danelaw". Maybe you already covered this elsewhere? Anyways, you should be proud of introducing ancient history to so many people, so they may better understand their roots.
Thanks for watching! The Danelaw itself will have several full length documentaries, focusing on all the different regions and rulers. This video was very much a freeform fun journey for me to explore whatever I felt like. I had no structure and just went where the pen took me.

@Mischelle that's why the Queen selected Diana Spencer, they're an old family from.the Norman invasion.. And to get some height back im the bloodline, Charles is short.

Would love to see you make some videos about Spanish conquistadors of North America. The Narvaez expedition into Florida and Cabeza De Vacas experience, Hernando De Soto. So many amazing stories. I love your content, you are doing great things.
Well done Pete! Thank you. It just occurred to me, the name Lunden (London-wik) is Swedish, and I believe it means "Grove". The college town in southern Sweden, just north of Malmo is named Lund. Perhaps this made them feel more at home? A compromise between London and Lund....Hmm?
Lund was Danish back then (was conquered by Sweden in 1679), although lund also means grove in danish. While a small settlement existed, Knud the Great massively expanded it and built a mint. The Danish minted coins had LVND DENEMEC written to destinguish them from English EADPIN ON LVNDEN. But Knud was notorious for accepting English culture too well for the Danes and Norwegians taste so dont know about the redubbing. Lunden and London sound pretty similart so it was probably just a spelling difference.

I would really like to find out how the people of this region continued after the Roman Empire fell apart.

Although the founder of Norse culture, King Nor, seems to have created his kingdom in Norway, also the other mentioned areas are of Norse culture. Therefore Norway should be labeled as Norway, not as Norsemen, because the Danes Swedes Geats are Norse too.
Yeah but in a viking age historical context Norwegians often aren’t called ‘Norwegians’. Of course Danes and Swedes are considered Norse too, but in a historical context, Norwegians are often called Norse, separate from Danes and Swedes. It gets confusing because similar to Norse, all Scandinavians are often also called Danes, even if they were Norwegian or Swedish.
@@HaraldrHarðráði the term Norwegian comes into existance when the country was turned christian by Harald Fairhair. From that point on they are called Norwegians... If I am correct the Roman's noted Angle settlements along the east coast in circa 100AD. Do you have any info on the Angle language, Angle similarity to the later Viking Danes, wars between the Angles and early Saxons, Horsa was Saxon or Angle etc were all Brythonic Brits subjugated by the invaders etc etc how did Saxon takeover as the lingua franca of early Briton (wessex / mercia) is it true the the angels were more tolerant of the Vikings due to culture and language?.....???? Just too many questions really
How wide was the belief in Odin during the pre-Viking era? Trade linked the Baltic peoples to the west and south. Mysterious Baltic Sea region? It's true there's no written historical records or hard evidence outside of pottery shards and an occasional weapon but: I see little reason why the Balts should have been any different than the Scandinavian peoples (Danes/Norwegians) of the same period. It was a marine and semi-agriculture based society and they would have been trading with their neighbors to the south for ideas, textiles, fruit, and metals. In return they supplied the south with furs, ivory, and timber. Trade linked them to the rest of the continent regardless of religion. A vid on the belief in Odin would be useful to explain the Northern Gods and their sphere of influence in 300-800 ad.
Pretty sure you could find alot of similarities from the coast settlements of that time from all over Scandinavia / the Baltic sea. The joms vikings had their settlement in today's Poland/Germany, seeing as trading and raiding eastwards was popular, and the rise of the kievan rus east and southwards i think there surely would be times where alot of people in the Baltic sea did believe in Odin, or some version of the Germanic or Norse mythos. I second that, that area in general and maybe how the people of north germany, scandenavia and baltic sea regions often had so much people migrating and taking over vast areas in the south during the migration periods. An example the goths that hail from today's Sweden.
According to the Volsungasaga (I believe that is the correct source, but it has been a while since I read it), which chronicles the Volsung clan in modern day Sweden, their origins come from the Norse Pantheon. The Norse Gods were ancestors of theirs, and migrated to the Baltic and Sweden from the north shores of the Black Sea. There is a river there now called the Don, spilling into the Black Sea near the Crimean Peninsuala, and the clan said there, near the mouth of the river, on the west of that river lived the Vanir, and on the east the Aesir. The Aesir conquered the Vanir, but instead of slaughtering them they assimilated with them. They later, still in the generation of the gods, migrated from there to the Baltic. In all, it sounds like one of many of the migration era tribes. It could be that they had adopted beliefs or shared their beliefs with others well before the migration, or that the Norse pantheon was spread throughout the Baltic after they established themselves in Scandinavia.
Your videos are best...if you didnt have the voice u have id maybe rethink that:).. i listen to history documentaries when i go bed each night, dont watch mutch tv anymore...your videos are great, good voice/presentation, i like thst they are not titled something like "complete history of vikings" and the video is 7min long:/ ...yours are good, they should play yours on bbc or history channel.
The Angles and Saxons were doing the Viking thing long before it became fashionable.
I'd like to investigate this in future videos.

I wonder how life would have been on the island of Bornholm in the middle of that wild Baltic Sea.
WulfStan of Hedeby said that the island Bornholm had its own king back then.
