The soldiers with rifles in the beginning were members of the French Foreign Legion- commanded by French officers but recruited from all over Europe. Many of them, like Beni, were hiding out from the police in their home country; some, like Rick, enlisted for the adventure (or plunder). Rick later says his whole garrison marched across Libya into Egypt. They would have marched from Tunisia or Algeria (French colonies at the time) across Libya (Italian) and into Egypt (semi-autonomous but really run by Britain.)

Yeah like you said with Winston, he was rather depressed because all of his military friends had all died in battle/in glory & he felt shame that he didn't die with them, survivors guilt. So he wanted to go out a hero which is why he sounded excited when they said he'd probably die too & that he was down to help.

You ask if it is based on real events. The movie is entertaining but fiction.
However, the characters of Seti, Ankhesenamun and Imhotep are based on real people.
Seti I was the second pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty ruling c. 1294 or 1290 BC to 1279 BC.
Ankhesenamun was an Egyptian queen during the 18th Dynasty. Daughter of Akhenaten (the heretic king) and Nefertiti. She was also the half sister and later wife of Tutankhamun. c. 1332-1323 BC.
Imhotep is interesting. He was a sage, astrologer, high priest of the sun god Ra at Heliopolis. architect of King Djoser's Step Pyramid ( the first pyramid) and chancellor to King Djoser. c. 2667-2600 BC.

Hello Amanda!😊 The bad CGI Rock is in the next film "The Mummy Returns" (2001). Except for that bad CGI it is a very good film, like this one. The woman you pointed out, Patricia Velasquez (Anuk-su-namun) is a Venezuelan actress and model. She became very popular after this film and got a larger part in the next one. You have pretty dark features like Patricia, Amanda.😉 They called those Egyptian coffins a sarcophagus. Good prediction with Benny.👍🏻 The older British guy Winston that flies the plane was a frequent guest star on the TV show "Bewitched" and "Hogan's Heroes". The CGI does seem to be different than other films of the time. Yep, he said "Death is only the beginning" before he died. The bugs that killed Benny are Scarab Beetles. The production budget was $80 Million with a $418 Million box office total. This film takes place in 1923 and 1926, so they would have different values back then. Great reactions to your first modern Mummy film, Amanda!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

In the first scene where Ankh-su-namun was introduced, during one of the early takes, the crew played a prank on Arnold Vosloo. Instead of Patricia Velasquez, it was Brandon Fraser walking out in body paint and a loin cloth.
The harness under Brendan Fraser's clothes during the hanging scene came undone in one take, and Fraser was accidentally hanged and lost consciousness for a few minutes. He suffered permanent nerve damage.

*The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. I love Rachel Weisz as the brainy, beautiful leading lady, Brendan Fraser as the adventurous man of action, and Arnold Vosloo as the chief villain. Also, they did get the mummification practices correct when Evelyn described how ancient Egyptians removed people's brains (minus a slight omission): The embalmers used the hook to also punch a hole in the person's skull so the brain drained out when they were rolled over. And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie.*
    *Side trivia:*
*1. In the scene introducing her as Ankh-su-namun, model/actress Patricia Velásquez was completely naked with the exception of a loin cloth, a few pieces of jewelry, pasties & body paint (body paint took four hours to apply).*
*2. Brendan Fraser revealed on a recent episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that he had a near-death experience during a stunt gone wrong while filming “The Mummy.” The Oscar winner said he was “choked out accidentally” during the scene in which he had to be hanged from the gallows in the Egyptian prison, which resulted in him being resuscitated by on-set medical personnel.*
*3. In the desert race to Hamunaptra, you see camels and horses. Horses are faster (on flat land), but camels are adapted to life in the desert. Even though they do eventually have to eat and drink, camels can live off the fat reserves inside their humps, their long eyelashes keep dust out of their eyes, and their feet are big and wide to keep them from sinking into the sand as they move.*
*4. After Evelyn unknowingly awakens Imhotep by reading The Book Of The Dead (which is actually a funerary scroll in real life) and the locust swarm flies into the encampment at Hamunaptra, the locusts crawling on the Egyptologist are actually grasshoppers that were refrigerated to make them sluggish. On a similar note, the scarabs in real life were merely dung beetles, not vicious flesh eaters.*

This movie is so fucking INCREDIBLE. At it heart it's just this really fun action/adventure flick, it could've easily been a forgettable-but-fun Indianan Jones knock-off, but there are so many little things about it that elevate it to so much more than that.
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz alone: both are great actors, really charismatic, and then they have impeccable chemistry.
Rachel Weisz' character, too, is fucking incredible: they make her klutzy at the beginning, she could easily be a cliche, but when the dude confronts her, instead of being mousy like the trope would typically call for, she's not remotely shy; she says, essentially, "I'm fucking INCREDIBLE at my job." And of course her whole "I... am a librarian" speech is fucking great. They never try to make her into this great adventurer, they just make her *really fucking good at what she does*. And so they don't try to make her fit the setting/genre by making her more Lara Croft, they just write her to be a librarian who finds this shit fascinating; she's not written to be, like, all theory but completely bumbling in the field (which she easily could've been, given her klutzy moment at the beginning. ... I mean, she DID read from the book. But that's beside the point; that's the inciting incident, it had to happen. And of course, her being able to read it is kinda the point).
Also, when Fraser gives her tools for digging; good for his character, showing he got her (I mean, stole, but still) something she'd find useful; he didn't give her a gun or something. (Although that can still be done well, as "Aliens" showed us. But also, it's cool that "The Mummy" went a different route.)
ALSO: Benny cycling through all the religions... what a fucking FANTASTIC character moment for Benny. Whoever wrote that... brilliant. Tells you everything you need to know about the character right there.

@hanng1242 the church hasn't practiced polygamy since 1890. The main Mormon Church is the LDS Church which hasn't practiced polygamy in about 135 years. The breakaway FLDS Church still does but is significantly smaller. There are about 17 million LDS members worldwide, but only about 30,000 in the FLDS.
I didn't even know about Mormon polygamy until l was in middle school and some random kids started making fun of me for it.

    • @hanng1242
      @hanng1242 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@LockeDemosthenes2 I am aware.
Here is some food for thought, though - take from it what you will:
Examine you own thought process. Why did you mention in your initial comment that you came from a "SUPER Mormon" family? Was it necessary for your point? Certainly, many parents of diverse backgrounds police what sorts of movies their children watch. You mentioned it either because you wanted people to know that you are Mormon, or because in your mind, the Mormonism was a necessary condition (whereas in reality it is a sufficient condition) to the parental oversight of entertainment such that you mentioned it without thinking about it. You are of course aware that Mormonism is a minority religion and that certain of its historical practices are deemed weird at best by most other people; thus, you must understand the reality that referencing it in comments will result in jokes about it from time to time. What then is the best way of handling it?
One way is to simply not respond. This would be my suggestion if somebody asks you how magnets work. If you do want to respond for some reason, what do you think the best approach would be? I suggest that a better way to have responded to my joke would have been to make one back - something like, "Only two? What kind of SUPER Mormon would my father have been with only two wives? I had *five* mothers." Doing this would demonstrate that you understood the comment, signal that it did not bother you, display that you are confident in or proud of your Mormonism, and show that you have a sense of humor. Even if the joke *did* annoy you, to the extent that somebody making jokes about your religion was trying to get under your skin, responding in the way I suggest would have put a stop to it whereas responding in a way that signals defensiveness would only encourage further mockery.

4:28- No, this is not a real legend and not very accurate. The basic plot points are based on the hysteria drummed up by the press after the discovery of King Tut's Tomb. If you want to learn more, there is a video or two of actual Egyptologists reacting to this film.
In 1923, Egypt was an independent kingdom after having been a British protectorate/Ottoman tributary state with joint custody over the Sudan, Libya was an Italian colony, and much of the rest of North Africa was French, hence why we see the French Foreign Legion engaging in battle roughly 5 years after WWI.
8:07-Antiquities refers to the ancient past, in this case Ancient Egypt
The Nile is a very big river, so to be on the wrong side of it is a major delay.
20:00 - And that is why the Chinese have not opened to the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of China.
21:49 - That is word for word the infamous "curse" from King Tut's tomb after it's discovery by Howard Carter in 1922.
27:53- Prior to Egyptology, the primary point of reference to Ancient Egypt was the biblical account of Exodus, when Moses lead the Hebrews out of enslavement in Egypt and to the Promised Land.

The story is very loosely based on Egyptian mythology (and the Bible for the Plagues), nothing real apart from some names. Of course all Mummy movies throughout the years were first inspired by the mysterious deaths of those who discovered the Tomb and Tutankamon. Deaths later explained by the absorbsion of germs and shrooms inside the tomb itself which gave them severe respiratory diseases. Also, tombs showed inscriptions of maledictions curses because the priests knew that all the riches buried with the Pharaohs would be sought after by thieves. Of course it was purely dissuasive and tombs were almost all ransacked throughout the centuries.
O'Connel and Benny are part of the French Foreign Legion with the recognizable white caps.
Ultra thinly trimmed eyebrows were a fashion trait in the 20s. Not my favorite thing.
Imhotep was also an Egyptian architect, the architect of some Pyramids and some temples.
The movie, despite bien complete bullshit Historically speaking is a very good horror movie with perfect set ups and resolutions, character development and of course Jerry Goldsmith at the soundtrack (with John Williams and Ennio Morricone, one of the most prolific film music composers, he died in 2004 and his son also died, from Cancer ten years or so later (the son Joel is very well known to have written all Stargare TV shows soundtracks)
For a B movie, it's a labor of love, contrary to the sequels (and the Scorpion King which you mistakenly took for this movie and they are terrible).
"Antiquities" refers to ancient artifacts from fallen civilizations. Those museums don't just have artifacts, they also have ancient documents from those eras to be studied In History, Antiquity typically ends at the Fall of Rome in 476 AD. When you hear Indiana Jones say "It belongs in a museum", it's pretty much that.
The CGI was just before Pirates of the Carribean Curse of the Black Pearl skeletons... Considering the Mummy is one of the first movies to do that, it's not that bad.

It's definitely weird to me, and perhaps it was just a 90's thing as Amanda said, but I think it might have been a nod to the era the film is set.
My grandmother was born around this time, and through adulthood had half or even thinner eyebrows than Mrs. Weisz.
Eventually she had none at all, leaving her to pencil stroke them on like a cartoon character. The things people do for social norms and/or vanity…

@@TheFlash60 1 - Too many man. Cut it down.
2 - Also the DCU is fucking *garbage*
3 - ALSO also... I just can't get behind the X-Men series. There are good movies in there (pretty front-loaded though; X1 lays a solid foundation for the series and the casting is *impeccable*... although they severely under-utilized James Marsden IMO; X2 was quite good; the "reboot" First Class was a solid new start... and I've heard "Logan" was good but bailed on the series before it came out). The thing is, the point of the X-Men is diversity, it's about bigotry (initially racism specifically, but it's evolved int more than just that at this point) so I always think the Animated Cartoon is just a much better introduction to the X-Men. Not that it's great, necessarily, but at least there's a cast of characters and it's not just the Wolverine (and sometimes Prof X/Magneto) show.
4 - Batman & Robin is garbage; it's really not worth watching. My suggestion is always to just watch Batman '66; it's what Batman & Robin *wanted* to be. It's the dumbest movie ever and I love it.
5 - Not sure how fondly you'll look upon any suggestion from me, given what I said in (2) and (3), but: I recommend you check out "Ravenous" if you haven't seen it. Some of your earlier suggestions makes me think you'll like it. It's a really weird, interesting, underrated (really, more "unknown" than underrated) movie. A really good cast with multiple actors I'm sure you'll recognize, but the only big name (I think) is Guy Pierce.
      oh, and
6 - I somewhat recently learned that "Army of Darkness" was supposed to be called "Medieval Dead" and... that makes me fucking furious. That's so much better a name, I can't believe the fucking idiot money people forced Raimi to change it to the much worse, much more generic "Army of Darkness". Ugh.

Not exactly. "Antiquity" doesn't just mean old, it means ancient. If it's 20 years old, it's vintage; 100 years old, that's an antique; 1,000 years old, _that's_ an antiquity. If you break an antique, you'll piss off the owner. Break an antiquity and some country's whole-ass government might charge you with a crime

The reason why you don't care about the CGI it's because it's a well-executed presentation where a lot of films today lack a decent presentation and execution in today's climate movies are in desperate need of artistic genius & true passion in America we don't even go to movie theaters anymore low expectation destroys any desire to go

Imo, CGI in the 90s and the early 00s looks so much better because filmmakers understood the limitations of the technology and still used practical effects when necessary (Jurassic Park and The Lord of the Rings trilogy are perfect examples of this). Modern movies use CGI and green screen as a crutch.

However, take my advice, the second movie will disappoint you. The acting is still pretty good, but you can tell they just threw something together so they could ride the wave from the first movie. The CGI in the 2nd movie is embarrassingly bad and the story line is cheese from the land of cheese.

Just as "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" is a perfect complement/companion piece to the Back to the Future trilogy, so is "A Knight's Tale" a perfect double-header with "The Mummy". I highly recommend it, add it to your list, react to it sooner than later.
ALSO another fantastic double-header: "Lucky Number Slevin" and "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang". Both fantastically written new noir with a good sense of humor (KKBB is a bit more outright funny; Slevin is more clever/amusing), with sharp, witty dialogue, an engaging plot with interesting reveals, and talented and deep casts. Both top-10 all-time movies for me. Top tier.

The Spanish Civil War fighting against Franco, the "Flying Tigers" were fighter pilots in China fighting Japan before the U.S. entered the war, fighting Santa Anna in the Republic of Texas, as I'm sure you're aware all over South America... it's been a thing since the 19th century and still occurs.
