    The XJS attracts mixed opinions which may account for its remarkably good value right now. I loved my time with this classic car and its plain to see it's value can only rise.

      Hi Roger, a small thought,,,,,,,,, with your "chuffing" exhaust manifold gasket,,,,,, you may be able to just undo the bolts on the port, and after cutting even a used gasket, just slide the replacement up into the space and tighten the bolts ???? It may work. Nothing to loose. - Will leave a comment on the car as a whole. thanks.

    I always thought the Jaguar XJS was the best looking car they ever produced. I grew up in a time when these cars were new and you would see them driving all over town. Yes, I live in America and there was nothing like seeing an XJS cruising down the interstate, so poised and different than anything else on the road. Jaguar sold a ton of convertible models in the US but honestly the coupes always took the prize. That distinctive flying buttresses on the rear quarters with the recessed rear window makes the whole car. In America, we had the oval round dual headlamps at front which gave it that ole English look and feel. The V12 was silky smooth but sadly so expensive to maintain that many examples feel into disrepair with owners that didn't understand nor care to keep them running right. We didn't get the inline 6 cylinder till late in the 1992 facelift generation year so early examples all had the thirsty V12 motor that most people can't afford to drive. I love the XJS and can literally just stop and stare at its beautiful shape and lines for hours. Few cars do that to me. Great video.

    Saw my first XJ-S in a BL showroom when I was a kid. It was on a revolving platform and I stood pressed against the glass window of the place staring. On one side the Jag and the Rover SDI 3500 on the other. Back then British Leyland were still capable of delivering some eye opening designs. Color me a fan of the derided TR7 too.

    Definitely a future classic. I've always been a fan. This jag has always made me think of what a "small" Bentley GT coupe would look like, inside, and out. The amount of clean, good running examples, is what will soon make these babies rare, as the cost of maintenance has left many of these classy, modern classics in a state of hopeless disrepair. Even with the V12 it's not fast, but it is extremely classy when it's in reasonably good shape.

    That was a great video Roger. I bought a '79 Pre-HE back in 1996. No rust, faultless Flamenco Red, and still in a thousand pieces. Since then, I have also bought a 1986 HE in Satin Bronze: also now in pieces (Grey import to Australia, with a bit of rust), and also a rust free1985 in near faultless Sebring Red. This one remains intact, with the exception of the engine bay. It is going to receive a 6.0 Jaguarsport and a split bell-housing Getrag 265 (I have both). I have colour coded the dash, and am in the process of fitting an update instrument cluster, which is an easier job than most people make it out to be. I have never driven a car where every single mile is such a pleasure. As you pointed out, the XJ-S just puts you into an unhurried place. I will part with not one, and look forward to a time where I can more fully devote my time to these marvelous cars. What a pedigree! Thanks for uploading the video : )

    I was your typical xjs sceptic simply because i loved and dreamt about owning an E type , but now at 62 i bought an xjs 3.6 last year - like they say a good wine gets better with age .This XJS has me hooked , its not posey like the E type its just cool .

    I've owned 3 XJS HE 5.3s, two over here, and one in Dubai. The latest for 22 years. I had her converted to LPG in 2005. It gives the same performance as petrol at half the cost. My first car was an MGA in1964. I've driven and owned quite a few cars both in the UK and overseas in my 56 years of driving. I wish I was able to have tried the EType but too expensive these days and I'm more than happy to stick with my baby!

    Those Buttresses are also what makes the 71 cougar XR7 I drove in high school look so great and the Mustang Coupe of 71-73. The C3 Corvette and Honda Del sol have endured partly due to those buttresses.

    Restored my '89 XJS, Rouge edition. I am in love with it. Anyone that has negative things to say about this car have never driven another comparable car like the incredibly high maintenance Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc, especially for the era. Look at the Countach. What a mess. Yes, it's beautiful and high performance, but the drawbacks are far worse than the XJS.

    Actually I have to disagree: the V12 is not as complicated as many might think. It has some typical issues that can be addressed even with some basic amateur mechanics skills. The parts that are causing the most issues - like the inboard rear brakes - are shared by the V12 and straight 6 versions. But - even 35 years later - driving along in one of these is still something special...and there is no rattle anywhere tainting the experience. The quality of the XJS is actually better than you would expect from an old Jaguar.

    • @RogerBaileyOnCars
      @RogerBaileyOnCars  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment, and for the info re the V12 - interesting point, driving along in an XJS is something special indeed, !

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      tfleiter the V12 might not be complicated, but here in the USA, they are expensive as hell to keep running. Not sure if it's the cost of parts or finding a mechanic that doesn't charge thousands of dollars per repair that makes them a money pit. I know someone who just wanted his 1989 XJS's radiator repaired and recored. Guess the price? $900.00 US dollars just to repair the radiator. Not counting the other costs to remove it and put it back in the car. Don't kid yourself, these cars cost a ton of money to keep maintained. If you're not rich, you shouldn't buy one because it can cost you more than it's worth if you're not careful. I love them, but I don't think I'll ever buy one.

    2.5 years ago I purchased a 1996 XJS 2+2 Convertible w/ 138K miles on it, poorly maintained by the previous owner, needing just about everything mechanical needing replacement. Body was in good shape as was the interior except for the driver's seat, needing a new bolster.I was able to have the mechanicals fixed over time and now it's a great Grand Tourer, gets a lot of looks and is a blast to drive on the back roads here in CT. I also have a National Award Winning rare 1990 Majestic Saloon, but the XJS is the fun car. It's not an E type in style, but a better car, with less problems once you get it up to snuff.

    They would have been even nicer with modern 5 or 6 speed automatic. They were slow off the line with that 3 speed, accumulated speed rather than accelerated. Mine was a V-12, silky smooth, and as mentioned surprisingly agile when pushed. Sure did burn gas though. Mine had been resprayed with a Chrysler teal over the original teal, much nicer paint, it had been converted from the original US quad headlights to the Euro spec ovals and looked beautiful, women loved it. And yes, the headliner was coming down.

    I own a couple of XJS cars in the USA; a hardtop, and a convertable.
    I can tell you that I will not live long enough to see their value escalate here.

    It had classic styling ,,,,, but it truly was a lemon with endless issues that made it expensive to own. These cars are considered worthless & they are not allowed to be licensed in many Canadian provinces.

    Back in 2013 I could have got a 3.6 metallic blue xjs coupe with manual gearbox and 10 months mot for...£695. The he v12 is less than 1s quicker in the 1/4 mile than the v6 manual which with half the pots actually spins less at 70mph using 30% less fuel. I knew all that and I'm kicking myself because I didn't buy it due to running cost fears and poor practicality. Wish I had now as similar examples are now over £4k which is only going to get higher. Also who cares if it has less space than a fiesta whilst being longer than the space outside your house when it rides like a dream?!

      yes I agree with your points, and it does ride & drive like a dream, good ones are still a sound investment imo ;)

    The design on them is still staggering. Just look at the rear lamp cluster that finishes the car off ??
    DJ Chris Evan bought a white V12 at auction for £4,500 (I think) ,,,,,,the photos say it all.
    -------
    A "wreck" was used in the 1984 "Comic Strip Presents" / early V12 HE,,,, with the windows up almost 100% silent inside before they crashed it.
    --------
    Top Gear use d "Y" reg gold V12---- at 146 mph it blew a top hose,,,, patched it --- off it went. ----- and then they went "banger racing " in it, for a cheap laugh.
    --------
    And the first XJS won the last "Cannonball Run" in 1979, they arrived before the press - the car was that fast, even after a "hold up", where truck driver threatened to shoot the tires.
    --------
    A little "trick",,, if you move the camera closer to the center from the front, --- the rear of the car just "vanishes", leaving only the door visible.
    ---------
    From the video, the car just looks "exciting". Roger, when you drove it, did you feel like a "spy" ? or if you were "On a Mission" ???? or to "meet a man landing in a private jet on a deserted airfield with some microfilm" ???
    ---------
    Coz face it,,,,,,,,, you look at the new ones ??? NICE TO GO TO SAINSBURYS IN ----- THEN YOU PUT £78 OF PETROL IN IT, THEN REALISE IS A BLOODY DIESEL AND YOU'VE GOTTA CALL THE AA.
    and it comes up on the screen,,,,,,, "ALL DOORS CLOSED ----- MISFIRE ON CYLINDERS 1,2,3,4,5,6, ARE YOU OUT OF FUEL ??? CALL GARAGE FOR ASSISTANCE,,,,,,, CUP HOLDER SNAPPED OFF,,,,,, RADIO TWO JEREMY VINE,,,,,,, CALL DEALER NOW,,, HAVE YOU TAKEN YOUR PROZAC ????? "
    New cars --- just amazing.

    • @stevejelly3161
      @stevejelly3161 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Roger Bailey,,, thanks for the reply,,,,,,,,, but you should have driven off and kept going to a "secret location",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and told the owner that they had to deposit £50 in used notes to a local animal sanctuary and hospice to EVER see the car again,,,,,,,,, then give them the £50 when you get back. Yeh, you'd have ended up in "The Daily Mail",,,,, "ROBIN HOODY STEALS ENGLISH WHITE NIGHT" -----ha ha ----- the court would hear the mitigating circumstances ,,,,,,,, "Diminished Responsibility add to the fact it was an XJS" .
      The court would assign you a "Community Order" under which you's have to drive a 2005 VW Passat in silver (petrol) and "tag" you to be back in the Mariot Hotel for 2 years --- of course denying you free access to the salad buffet would violate your human rights. Cheers mate.

    I have been dealing with these cars for the past 20 years and over that time period the prices have remained relatively stable. I hope that things work out better for the XJS but investment grade is not a term I'd use for describing one. These cars don't sit well so low mileage examples are not necessarily good choices. Todays buyer has the benefit of 40 years of known modern day remedies that solve all of the known deficiencies which can make these cars very reliable daily drivers. The trick is to be able to work on the cars by yourself. As one of the members of a well known forum says "There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Jag" buy the most expensive one that you can afford and go from there.
