Common mistakes: Designers vs. actual user needs

  • Discover the common mistakes designers make when creating products versus what users actually need. Learn how to avoid poor design choices and the importance of design modifications to meet user needs. For unknown reasons, Spyderco opted to make their largest, most robust folder with ridiculously slick G-10 handles. After a few near misses and a couple of dents in the hardwood floor, I decided to take matters into my own hands and make it darn near impossible to lose your grip on this knife.
The magic is in the checkering file. Anyone can order a checkering file; once in your hand, the sky is the limit. I've put the best thumb notches on a handful of Becker BK2s and other knives that came without thumb grooves. It is also a great way to add texture to just about any material.
Here is the video where I destroy one Spyderco Manix 2 to make another Manix 2:

👍 Excellent tip! Thank you for sharing.
I have discovered a sure fire way to improve any Spyderco - replace it with a Buck. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Well done. Modding knives is a lot of fun. Thats a personalized touch and there's not another one exactly like it in the world!

Love the crown emoticon. Thanks. Yep, I am pretty proud of this one. Took a couple hours actually and measuring and planning. Feeling good about this.
Can't wait to show the latest mod I just did to a Randall 5-4.
      Stay WARM!!

The G10 serrations look good. If there’s enough meat there you should try that chipped style checkering that Esse puts on there J series knives. I’d say you could cut some divots and dye the indentations black or dark brown and get a heck of a look. I have the Shaman in carbon scales with s90v blade. You talk about slick, it’s like hanging on to a greased pig. I’ll be watching for your solution on that lock pinch. It’s truly annoying. I don’t know what the Shaman is good for. I think it’s a pocket survival knife or a boat anchor. But I sincerely want to like it. Thanks as usual for a great vid.

Thank you for the idea and suggestion.
I thought about a texture like the ESEE. There is a guy who modifies ESEE as a career. Some of his stuff is cool. But for this beast, I wanted something that actually bit into my skin a little. And I assure you, this does. Holy crap. Glad I stopped when I did. If I made all the cuts end in a point I would not be able to let go.
Only gotten the lock pinch a couple times on a PARA 3. Some of that lock could be removed and get it out of the way. Hmmmm. Maybe someday I'll try that.

Hey brother, I love the shaman how it is, but you could consider taking a heavy grit sand paper and just roughing up the surface to get some texture

I tried that as well. Actually brand new 60 grit. Not really grippy enough. NOW it grippy. Yikes. I can't let go of it!!

Nice job, Tom. I might have to purchase a checkering file. During Y2K, at night, my employer had a coworker, and I keep an eye on the property, and I brought a triangle file and a set of 1911 handgrip. I hand checkered them in one night and got overtime pay for my time

Hey Tom, can you tell me the dimensions of the Esee 3 sheath, like the thickness, length, width. I wanna know if it's compact enough to tie inside my cowboy boot

    • @knifetimestory
      @knifetimestory  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure Daniel here you go:
5 1/2 inches length, 2 1/2 inches at its widest point, 1 1/2” inches thick at the throat.
