A habit I try to keep is always have water with me. One bottle for drinking, and another bottle in case of injuries. And because I'm nearly 30, I stretch as much as I can. Even after a tumble.
I'm in my 40's and just getting back into it. Just making sure to not try anything too gnarly. Mainly sticking to curbs, and going to bomb some hills when I get better again. I'm 100% going to get a helmet though, and probably knee pads (as my knees are going now, if I hit them, could be catastrophic) I'd never even heard of "butt-pads" but the broken coccyx sounds nasty. Might have to look into that, too.
If you start to notice/feel a bit of speed wobble happening, put slightly more of your weight on your back foot. Counterintuitive perhaps is to relax too. If you tense up it amplifies the wobble making it worse. If you have the space you can also start carving gently to stop the wobble.
Everytime I see "He was OK"... What do you mean by "OK"? If you mean "survived", then alright. But when someone falls 6 feet and lands directly on a rail with nothing but his balls, I'm not sure if he's really ok.
I'm 49 and have been skating for a year. It's fun, fustrating, and rewarding. I always skate within my control. I take baby steps when skating. I'm gradually working my way up riding a quarter pipe. I wear protective gear especially a helmet. I've taken so many falls falling hitting my helmet. I'm slowly improving. Still learning to ride switch. It feels awkward I'm still gonna ride switch. I saw a video here on TH-cam of a skater who was good enough to be a pro but fell now he has a brain injury. He thought he would be ok without a helmet. My biggest advice is skate within control. When I started skating I leaned too far forward and backwards on purpose so I'd fall. Did that a lot. Reason being so I'd know where my balance is. It caused me to be aware when leaning too far. Even when I fall it's a part of learning.I prefer my trucks right in the middle not tight, nor super loose. I do ankle stretches for at least a minute. The things I love about skateboarding 1) It's a lot of fun 2) It's great exercise 3) Increases balance 4) Helps me cope with my mental illness 5) Gives me a better high than weed and pain killers 6) It increases my pain tolerance 7) Gives my confidence 8) Keeps my young 9) Keeps my bones strong 10) No rules I'm gonna keep skating even though I have arthritis because I love it and it decreases the pain of my arthritis plus other benefits.
I'm so glad I came across your comment. I'm 40 and have decided to take up skateboarding, even though I've got PsA. It sounds cheesy but I was really inspired after watching the Olympics, not just because it's cool but because I was massively proud of how supportive and encouraging the skating community is. I'm going to take baby steps with my old ass, but I'm so looking forward to my first skateboard arriving this week 😁
Best advice for speed wobble is to not over correct. It's always safer to under correct than over correct in skating. If you're hitting a turn at a higher speed than you're used to and you get some wobbles, keep your knees bent and your weight low, plant your feet and make them sturdy, then slowly make the adjustments to your turning in your shoulders. The rest of your body will follow naturally. Speed wobble happens when your trucks want to turn but you over correct, essentially fighting against the direction your wheels want to go, throwing your balance off. It's best to just lean into it, commit, and keep your stance solid, but not stiff. Imagine your body is like water, reacting gently to what the board does and pushing back with an equal amount of force. Once you get comfortable going fast, a lot of other things in skating get progressively easier. You need the confidence first, though. Never bomb a hill when you aren't confident in yourself. You will stiffen up and get BODIED.
I was so scared of learning tricks rolling until i finally convinced myself to buy some protective gear and i dont want to say it eliminated the fear, but it sure made it a lot easier to start and from there on it came to me. Just like riding motorcycles the skateboarding community should advocate for more protective gear. As a begginer skateboarder I think part of the reason we prefer learning standing still is because if you have a bad board and a bad place to skate it can be hard to get speed while also trying to learn tricks - bad boards dont roll for long
As well as the ground below. My roads here sucked so much and I crave smooth surfaces my local skatepark is also old and is just rough pebbled concrete, which is not enjoyable for me. I wanted something to do so I started to learn tricks in my backyard, but quickly realized it was getting me no where if whenever I rode I couldn't do them .

I'm in my mid thirties and am starting to ease back into skating after having quit around the time I was 18. Leg strength, endurance, and balance is wonky and I absolutely suck now, but the first time stepping on a board after so long was a trip - felt so familiar it felt like I got whacked in the head by a time machine.
@@angry_zergling That's awesome man, its great to see more older people getting back into it. I felt strange going into a skate shop after so long at this age but what ever I got my new skate on the weekend and my fist time on it was about as weird as going into the store lol. I sort of had the same feeling, it all felt so normal, but very strange at the same time. I wasnt able to get a decent ollie my first time out but it was nice to just get used to rolling around. Going to get out today an practice some more and on the weekend me and my nephew will be hitting the local park to get some real practice in. Mad respect bro, stay safe, we dont bend as good as we did a decade ago !.
@@angry_zergling I just started getting back into skating at 33 and I could feel the muscle memory was still there, i could ride around and carve nicely but after working in an office for a while god damn my back and legs werent up to the task I could barely pop, my nollie shoves were sloppy and I could barely manual so I started a bit of yoga in the mornings and it really helped me get that flexibility and ballance I had as a 20 year old.
I just started back into skating may of this year stopped skating in 2014 and only did it for about 5 months then. Using protective gear helps so you can learn quicker and skate more also learning ollies moving helps because everything you'll do will be moving and some tricks work better moving than standing in place.
You did forget that some of us live in places that don't even have sidewalks. So skating every day to just do every day stuff is not really possible. Unless you want to dodge traffic. If the world cared to make walkable towns then it'd be different. But everything is designed for cars and not humans. So there's nothing to really be done But. If you want to skate every day, then it's definitely still doable. Parking lots public parks and so on.
@@minou2980In Vietnam for example, in places that have sidewalks, they’re usually so narrow and mostly occupied. There isn’t any place for walking let alone skating. People walk on the streets where the traffics are.

About 3:54, I have a good counter argument for learning (some) tricks stationary. I did the mistake of learning Ollies mainly stationary, however it has given me the complete understanding of how the trick works and I even accidentally discovered Kickflips while learning how to catch Ollies. I feel like it has it's drawbacks, but also some pros, but then again I think it's also more a person to person kinda case thing.
I get that too! Like I am learning Ollie’s rn and I started holding a fence so I felt more comfortable on the concrete and then yesterday I started practicing Ollie stationary but on practicing the pop part without the fence and doing that before I slide my foot and get air is helping me get more confident of doing it while not holding on anything or moving etc cause for me I gotta feel confident in my self before I push myself to the next step. But I’m getting there slowly
About pushing mongo as a beginner: do it. My little brother learned skateboarding pushing mongo for the early years, gradually getting comfortable with pushing regular. The benefit of this is that he can now push regular in switch stance effortlessly. I’m still pushing mongo switch 20+ years later 🙁
Skating “mongo” as it is called now is how I learned over 40 years ago. Didn’t hinder me one bit. Do what works for you, screw everyone else. Skate to create!
the protection part i can vouch for cause the first time i skated i tried to drop in i instantly face planted the concrete pasted out and my mom drove me to the hospital :)
Where I live there's a local skater-owned shop across the street from the park, and they have a snow-cone place in the same building as the shop so sometimes when I've gone both places have came in handy to skaters and anyone who is really hot
Rule One: You do you. Don't let other people tell you how to skate when it comes to aesthetic. It's about fun and expression. For example, contrary to popular belief, there is absolutely nothing wrong with mall grabs or pushing mongo.
For me learning a new trick standing still and even holding onto bars or using cheaters like tennis balls was super helpful. I could do it slow and focus on getting the basic movements down. Saves on wiping out, getting banged up and pain that distracts during the next attempt. But quickly removing the safeties and start attempting the trick while moving soon as you get the basic feel for the trick. I feel it actually reduced the time it took to land the trick for real.
I don’t know why people hate mongo pushers, I mostly push mongo and I’m “good” at skateboard I also can push regular but it is more comfortable pushing mongo but yeah that’s my opinion
Something that happened to me was that I did the tricks standing still and then when I went to the skatepark I couldn't even go up to the manual box xd
Loosening trucks will not always be a great option depending on weight and height, the average skater is normally thin and below 6ft so standard bushings and loose trucks are fine but if your taller and heavier then I found and discussed with other larger skaters that you need really hard bushings and generally tight trucks as your weight and height will move the board around more regardless because of the higher pressure. Another factor is if you put wax into your truck cup to stop squeaking it will stop squeaking but increase the amount of movement so even simply doing that will increase the feeling of movement far more due to the lubricated nature.
Bout 4 years ago, was on my skateboard, went to do a shuvit, landed on my tail boat so hard, it was bruised and slightly fractured, I hadn't touch a skateboard again until last week. That injury generally made me fear skateboarding. But not anymore👍
I'll say it as many times as I have to, skating mongo gave my switch push foundation when I didn't expect it, so go ahead, do what you want to do and don't listen to people who are trying to fit into the status quo.
The "loosen up" comes from the strength inside your body that grows during whatever sport you do, and also from development of your nervous system. You need much less effort for basic tasks like balance once you've exercised i.e. kept doing it for a long time because you get stronger and your nerves adapt to it. You might already have force or you can increase in gym too if you know how to do it - in one sport you need certain muscles and in another you need other muscles - but in the beginning it's important to keep on doing what you wanna do. Human body is incredibly adaptable to different tasks but it happens rather slowly in the beginning, then speeds up, and once you've reached a certain level improvement pretty much plateaus.
how i first learned my ollie was stationary, and i was so afraid of busting my ass on concrete, so i’d ollie (my kick pushing the board out more) from the grass onto the sidewalk. it’s getting rid of my fears
No joke, while I was watching the falling part, I was going to say I remembered, but I'll never forget this actually. I fell doing kick turns (pretty dumb), and broke three lumbar vertebrae. That scared me a lot. And fun fact, this was 50 days ago, and my doctor said that in 50 days I could skate again. So today, while I'm watching this video, I'm back, baby. But still, that shit scared me, and I'm still scared, and today is going to be a wild ride. I guess I'll have to learn everything from the beginning, huh? I mean, I never knew any tricks, so it's going to be pretty dope.
If you've been getting a trick without motion, try it going up a little incline. Just before momentum is gone, smash it till you're comfortable going faster.
When I was 12 years, I was so fearless when I go street bombing. I did fall of my skateboard but I didn’t fall to the ground. I just almost twist my spin when I try to balance. Me right now, I can’t street bomb anymore because I’m scared 😂
This one time (before I started skating) I broke my tail bone when I was about 6 - 7 years old and it sucked so much I couldn't walk or sit good for about 2 months but the worst thing about it (and this was also kinda funny) but my parents thought I was over exaggerating my broken ass and didn't take me to a doctor
my 11 yo self didn't give a shit about foot placement and now 8 years later i still push-off with my front foot, but tbh i learned to power slide and i'm very confident with going down very steep hills and just zoooom, i have a penny board and just love to cruise around on that thing, don't matter if fast or slow
I am 39 and just starting to skateboard for my health. I never heard of a butt pad. I hope the local skate shop doesn’t look at me like I am a weirdo when I inquire about purchasing one.
having but pads is very important its true if u injure or break ur tail bone its very hard to sit or if u clench ur but or even pooping is hurts alot cus the tsil bone moved if u do those i just stand up cus it hurts if u sit on solid surface
I know this isn’t a Ollie video but it’s about beginners so the way I learned to do a Ollie is just put a small line of rocks in front of me so if I’m going fast and don’t do a small Ollie I’m gunna eat it and usually beginners do Ollie’s just really small ones so I just did it then worked my way up to bigger objects
just a random weekend popped into my local skate shop with my dad to buy some new wheels and one of my favourite rappers, he isnt very popular but is in my area, was in there. and the workers are the best, when i was starting they helped me get the right equipment
good points, but I would say three ways to stop, you can also hop off the side of your board and run just enough not to fall forward until you you stop. in fact I would say this is the most important to learn especially if going fast.
I first started skating regular mongo and didnt see nothing with it. The skating community made me feel insecure. Now i can push regular, goofy mongo and switch. Biggest accomplishment next to learning the ollie 🔥

6:40 Oh, man... this reminds me of the first time my idiot brother thought it would be a good idea to hold on to his friends moped (with me riding bitch) while doing almost 35 mph down the road going back home. And my Bro started to wooble like a MOFO and he bails and slides on the concrete road with shorts and a t-shirt on. We stopped and asked him are you okay? He looks at his arms and legs and is like, yeah am fine just a scratch. He stands up and everywhere that his body touched the road was a fine layer of skin scraped off. And BLOOD just starts coming out in every spot that was skinned off. We all looked at him like he was dying. He's screaming, were screaming... We don't know what to do.. We got home and blood is everywhere. We had a dog towels that were old and only for bathing the dog. Mind you they had cat and dog hair on them at times. Hes patting himself down, he has cat and dog hair in his wounds. He decides to take a shower... He's screaming and my parents arent home yet. This dude had some NARLY scabs afterwards. He was pretty lucky it wasn't worse.
Bro, everyone is learning first time Ollie standing and next steps is Ollie while riding, same steps can be for kick flip and pop shovit so I really believe is essential for someone that just started skateboarding to learn them in this way and next tricks will be learned while moving. Is no bad habit is just normality
I think it's okay to not wear a helmet but bringing one with ya is always a good idea you can take it off on easy stuff chuck back on to learn something then when u want the clip take it off because you got it down by then
I started skating 2 weeks ago and i learnd to go down a ramp (small wooden) i was so proud then i went to another skatepark with a ramp double sized out of concreet and i thought "ok helmet knees arm and hands protected just comit to it and youll be fine" i did and landet on my tailbone ... that is 1 week ago and now i cant train for ollis because it hurts like hell still 😢 side note :i skated for fun few years back so i know how to drive ect i just never did any tricks tho
I am returning to skating after almost two decades. I find weird he said not to push with your front foot. I always pushed with my front foot and never had control issues.
Zumiez is a last resort, when you got nothing else, like literally and the best part about online shopping means NO WAIT LINES BABY, it’s empty and your in and out… well depending on where you live of course so don’t take that for granted, for example, I’m from the northeast area of Philly and there are no good skate shops like no good skate shops anywhere and I really needed to get a board and a new pair shoes Had no time to order online. So just hitch a ride to zumiez, and your in and out, just prepare to spend a good chunk of change on something nice, there’s always a price for skating. But well worth it, best of luck. But quickly removing the safeties and start attempting the trick while moving soon as you get the basic feel for the trick.
I feel it actually reduced the time it took to land the trick for real.
One of the only skateshops in my town shut down some time in the past few years. It made it a lot harder for me to get new shit
I don’t know why people hate mongo pushers, I mostly push mongo and I’m “good” at skateboard I also can push regular but it is more comfortable pushing mongo but yeah that’s my opinion
I think mongo pushing does not look good. Sometimes when I set up for a little fakie Ollie down a 3 stair I push switch mongo.
I push mongo and I hate it😅🤣
Something that happened to me was that I did the tricks standing still and then when I went to the skatepark I couldn't even go up to the manual box xd
I love the little "he was okay" pop ups, makes me giggle.
Jamie griffin would disagree with the stationary truck rule…
Loosening trucks will not always be a great option depending on weight and height, the average skater is normally thin and below 6ft so standard bushings and loose trucks are fine but if your taller and heavier then I found and discussed with other larger skaters that you need really hard bushings and generally tight trucks as your weight and height will move the board around more regardless because of the higher pressure. Another factor is if you put wax into your truck cup to stop squeaking it will stop squeaking but increase the amount of movement so even simply doing that will increase the feeling of movement far more due to the lubricated nature.
first video i’ve had recommended since you came back and i’ve got to say i love it
Fall good=important 👍
Got back into skating after 20ish years. Also anyone skating in Colorado, if you have a 303 boards, hit it up, they'll get you right
Duuuuuddddeee! If skateboarding was a unit in elementary school, middle school and high school. Shit would have been bomb!!!
Dude I got 2 board from my neighbor who has been skating for years and I finally learned how to Ollie on it today
i used to push mongo all the time, then about a week ago, idk how... it just felt weird. and i havent pushed mongo since lol
I mean, I never knew any tricks, so it's going to be pretty dope.
welcome back, its been a minute lol
If you've been getting a trick without motion, try it going up a little incline. Just before momentum is gone, smash it till you're comfortable going faster.
I would say, don’t be afraid to fall, we will all fall eventually but if you don’t try you won’t get anywhere, go out of your comfort zone
7:16 the guy that picked up his hat was a real one
I’m trying my hardest rn to build up that muscle memory. Stuck on a $50 complete tho, so I’ll snap it In half before I learn to ollie
What butt pads would you recommend? I'm on the fence since I'm not sure what brand or pair provides good protection for the tail bone.
Who is the guy who flips up from his break-rolls?
That was amazing.
Just when im about to buy me New wheels and Shoes just to go skating again after 2 years you upload😂🎉
i love you man
When I was 12 years, I was so fearless when I go street bombing. I did fall of my skateboard but I didn’t fall to the ground. I just almost twist my spin when I try to balance. Me right now, I can’t street bomb anymore because I’m scared 😂
Dude the guy in the 3 wheeler at the skatepark thought he was so sick 9:30
This one time (before I started skating) I broke my tail bone when I was about 6 - 7 years old and it sucked so much
I couldn't walk or sit good for about 2 months but the worst thing about it (and this was also kinda funny) but my parents thought I was over exaggerating my broken ass and didn't take me to a doctor
my 11 yo self didn't give a shit about foot placement and now 8 years later i still push-off with my front foot, but tbh i learned to power slide and i'm very confident with going down very steep hills and just zoooom, i have a penny board and just love to cruise around on that thing, don't matter if fast or slow
I'm 13 and i wanna learn how to skate, i've been a few weeks and i'm getting a lil more confidence
I gave my friend a board he’s got pushing mongo down I told him it’s fine as long as he’s comfortable
normalise mongo pushing. i have yet to see any valid argument as to why its bad
@@grimauc idk I mean ion care but some people do 🤷♂️
@@LuvSxin yeye i wasnt meant to be accusing i was meant to be agreeing, just phrased it weird, haha. there needs to be more skaters with your mindset
Can we see you skating!?
just a random weekend popped into my local skate shop with my dad to buy some new wheels and one of my favourite rappers, he isnt very popular but is in my area, was in there. and the workers are the best, when i was starting they helped me get the right equipment
A tip for a good quality skateboard for a beginner that wants to learn some tricks?
Possibly skateboard with silicone wheels?
I really wanna try to skate every day but here where i live it rains a lot and i mean RAIN, there are barely any good spots in my town too 😭
good points, but I would say three ways to stop, you can also hop off the side of your board and run just enough not to fall forward until you you stop. in fact I would say this is the most important to learn especially if going fast.
keep your shoulders square regular and switch 🤙🏻
0:19 WOAHHHHH
I push mongo when i need some extra power, my left leg is stronger and i can kick my right foward a little for extra oomph.
mondo after landing a tech trick was my favorite thing...
I first started skating regular mongo and didnt see nothing with it. The skating community made me feel insecure. Now i can push regular, goofy mongo and switch. Biggest accomplishment next to learning the ollie 🔥
The "but" had me wildin
0:17 GYATT
I was watching this at my lowest slumbers state yet, but “butt” like a jolt sent me trough a roof
I recommend always being prepared to fall rather do it before than in the moment
There He Is! 😁
The park shown at eight minutes and 30 seconds in this clip is my park. It’s in Oakland on 18th St. in west Oakland hopefully some of you guys go check it out it’s actually pretty nice
I used to push with my front foot, so I had to start over lol
i think im laughing more than im learning wtf happened at 9:20 🤣
6:40 Oh, man... this reminds me of the first time my idiot brother thought it would be a good idea to hold on to his friends moped (with me riding bitch) while doing almost 35 mph down the road going back home.
I landed my 1 kickflip 😭🥳🎉
one of the guys that used to be on brail actually worked at my zumizes for a min
I wanna be out skating but we've had snow for the past week. The closest skatepark is 10.3 miles away, and there isnt a skateshop within 20 miles
Oddly enough, I went out and realized I use both feet depending on what I am doing.
Awesome vid
My favourite
I would love to skate every day but Norway has shitty weather so it’s raining all the time even in summer 😞😞
4:30 rip to that guys board
Zumiez is a last resort, when you got nothing else, like literally and the best part about online shopping means NO WAIT LINES BABY, it’s empty and your in and out… well depending on where you live of course so don’t take that for granted, for example, I’m from the northeast area of Philly and there are no good skate shops like no good skate shops anywhere and I really needed to get a board and a new pair shoes Had no time to order online. So just hitch a ride to zumiez, and your in and out, just prepare to spend a good chunk of change on something nice, there’s always a price for skating. But well worth it, best of luck. And make sure you do your research on these shops before you go out nit picking God bless y’all
did he just upload 🤯🤯
2:20 if your going to ne bombing large hills, invest in slide/ brake gloves
Missed these vids bro
