Incredible Mini v Lotus track battle at Goodwood

- The cars of the Goodwood Revival's Fordwater Trophy in 2019 might have been quite small, but that did not mean that the action was any less exciting than the big GT cars racing in the RAC TT. The highlight of this awesome race was this amazing battle between a Mini Marcos - in the hands of Goodwood legend Nick Swift - and a Lotus Elan - raced by Robert Barrie. It's not often that a Lotus Elan looks like the big-engined brute, but being pitched against the little Mini Marcos does just that. As the Mini catches through the corners, the extra power of the Lotus pays down the straights. Can Swift find a way through?

Nope, never
I had the fortune to have 2 races this close with this amount of respect, the "downside" was that it was virtual racing only, never the less loved it just like this. Oh and btw it was againts the same guy, we each had a "win" respectively.

Nick Swift is my hero. Always driving the underpowered cars to the absolute maximum to make all of the higher horsepower drivers crap their pants.

First time knowing of the Marcos. It’s a cute and happy looking car.
That's an unusual one. Well, they're all unusual, but your standard Marcos were a little bigger.
And I think they had plywood floors!
They raced in the 1966 Le Mans and placed 15th (that was the first one won by the Ford GT40). It's basically a mini in a fiberglass body which could get up to 141mph down the Mulsane straight.

I would love to own a restored little Lotus Elan. Hope Lotus don't forget their heritage in moving forwards.
Their heritage is all Lotus will have left when they go EV. Nothing they build now truly reflects the historic principles of Colin Chapman, so the marque is dead to me.
This was more fun to watch than all of the high dallor or pound F-1 racing combind .

Always a pleasure to watch a good dice between good drivers who know where the corners of their cars are, and who never feel the need to biff and barge when good driving will suffice. And why do we need to watch the rich boys in their V8s when this sort of spectacle is available? Driving beats dollars every time.
Each and every car is a character in itself. Lovely race :)

Thats a nice red colour on the number 48 Lotus Elite. I used to own an Elite after my father died. A nice blue Elite, it looked great in the Hawaiian sunlight my older sister in Seattle owns it now. I owned it for about a year. Fabulous little car.
I love watching Nick Swift Racing, he always seems to enjoy every race no matter where he finishes.

What a fabulous couple of cars! There no more cars like these nowadays! There are still various Elan´s and Mini Marcos in Portugal that appears in classic races! Stay safe!

Nick Swift seems to have more fun than anybody racing at Goodwood. You can just tell he's grinning ear to ear underneath that helmet.

On more than one occasion I was rocking forward when the cars were in the straights, trying to give the Mini a little more momentum. Nick Swift is as good a driver as he is an engine builder.
I sat watching this on the edge of my seat, that was a blast!

What’s great about this kind of racing is a possibility to a reasonably successful person to race in this class
I once saw a race where it was the other way around, Elans vs. Corvettes. The Corvettes where blasting away at the straights, but the Elans where always catching them in the corners.

As I’ve said in previous mini Marcus videos. My dad used to weld chassis is for them & then found out a family friends dad used to race them it’s a small world

Mini Marcos - possibly the ugliest mini based kit car, but vert light and great fun to drive!
I drove one in early the 80's, with a 1380cc motor, it was very quick compared to the cars of that era. I would have loved an Elan but couldn't afford one.

Never heard of a Mini Marcos. Looks alot like a toad but I do like it.
Heart breaking for me to see a 275 being overtaken by these two little toy cars. Having said that I drove a 64 mini cooper S mock up and it still is one of my favourite cars i have had the pleasure of owning.

You are thinking of the Marcos GT, plywood chassis and fibreglass body from the 1960's. From approx 1970 they switched to tubular steel chassis as the plywood expensive to fabricate. Jackie Stewart raced a Marcos early in his racing career. See more on Marcos website.

While the Mini has a less powerful OHV engine, the car itself is clearly more voluminous than the Elan.

Given that the MM is makIng 140hp, how can the talking head describe a deficit of 40hp as a 'little?' Ridiculous!
Exactly, it's getting on for 30% more power in the Lotus which is an enormous difference in racing.
